TOMTOM charges monthly fees for traffic though, correct?

many of the recent reviews are for the new MAP updates .. people are not happy about it and it was very confusing

With TOMTOM is it easier to copy past addresses into tomtom route destination then with navigon? I think with navigon they sell 3rd party apps to make it compatible. on the website it sounds like u can copy from applications or websites right into TOMTOM.
It makes it so hard to make these expensive purchases without being able to try out the application first.
You can pay for one month $2.99 if you don't need traffic at all times. But that's not a subscription you buy as you need or you can pay yearly $19.99.

I don't know about the copy paste but I haven't seen too many complaints about it in the reviews. The big thing for me is that quite a few reviews and comments here say that Navigon has a tendency to take you in a round about way where as TomTom is almost always on target for the straightest most direct route. To me that's far more important than any bells and whistles.

I'm a long time Navigon user. Haven't used TomTom or any others. Navigon always routes me fine. Just want to counter balance the reports of bad routes. I've used Navigon up and down the East Coast as well as in Illinois, Kansas, and Oregon. Never had a problem. BTW, using on an iPhone4S.

I use aroundme app (free) to find what it is that I am looking for (even if in another state) I can copy paste the address it will find it, then there is a menu to open it in Navigon, TomTom or maps - so copy/paste in app is not an issue for me.

I bought both and ran them concurrently for a few weeks (along with my old Garmin nuvi) just to experiment. In at least 90% of the cases the routing was the same. In the cases that they weren't there was no clear cut winner. Sometimes Tom-Tom was better, sometimes Navigon, and sometimes Garmin. In fact in a couple of cases I found faster routes that just by looking at them I would have sworn were worse. (After all, I know better than some stupid machine right? *note sarcasm.) The arrival times were very similar as well. Shorter routes tended to be off the most, longer routes all were reasonably accurate.

After about a month, I just went with Navigon because I preferred the UI.

In the case of bad routing it might be area specific or just user error. Don't assume you always know your route is the best. Maybe it is and maybe it isn't.

I don't really think you can go wrong with either app but for me Navigon is No. 1. After each new update to either program I again run them side by side for awhile just to see if there are any drastic changes but I keep coming back to Navigon.

MobileNavigator broke volume even more

I had MobileNavigator before v2.0 and the volume level was barely tolerable (too low). Now with version 2.0 they broke it even more> Better have a REAL quiet car, windows rolled up and no noise inside to hear it correctly.

I like the app but after $60 and constant poking and prodding the app to try and get volume I am disgusted.

Yeah, And I was taking a trip and while on the road I noticed it did the 2.0 update. Would not let me into the app until maps were downloaded and you need wi-fi, so I was screwed. Honestly never saw it ask to do the update, or I missed it.

Take I agree with you for the most part - the UI is WAY better and I love that about it. For me the routing was just not simply good - you might be right on area dependent on that one. I wish we could have a hybrid of both apps making the BEST app :-/

Awesome comments guys .. helps users like myself who are trying to decide between the nav apps ... still i keep only hearing navigon and tomtom and a little of garmin .. but i think garmin bought out navigon.

+1 Navigon
so everyone pretty much likes the UI better on navigon.

+1 TOMTOM
Some people find no routing issues with navigon and others pretty much say that the routing was off. TOMTOM is always on key.
+1 Navigon
seems to work fine on the east coast per reviews .. not sure where people are located that were having issues with incorrect direct routes

+1 navigon
one time traffic cost, TOMTOM either per month or year. Not sure which one works better, not too much mention about it.

+1 navigon
one charge for map updates (inital cost) .. i think u either get updates once a year for up to two years or lifetime.. still up in the air. That fresh maps update is really for people who need to update the maps quarterly. TOMTOM from what i was told doesnt give u any map updates for free. There was a new update pushed out on noc 20th and that will probably be it until next year. About 15% of roads change every year.

+1 navigon
I am pretty sure google local search in the application is included and not an add on purchase. As with tomtom ... google local search within application is a live feature that has to be added and bought.

+1 navigon
on sale and around $20 cheaper then TOMTOM

I tell u, i am like seesaw ... with every post i am changing between TOMTOM and Navigon ...

as of now i am back to navigon ... geesh ... haha

Appreciate the reviews guys!

another Navigon and TOMTOM question

when u view the map is there anyway to toggle between different views like u can with google maps?
standard (which it shows u default, like cartoon), then satellite and hybrid

can u view map in satellite view or hybrid ....?

What do you mean by this? I don't see anything that's an in-app purchase relating to Google maps.

How is contacts addresses to TomTom handled? Is there the same issue with apt/suite numbers as with Navigon? And do you have to enter the address backwards like in Navigon?

Navigon uses Google Search as well...has for awhile. Select POI->Local Search and Google comes up.

I wasn't doubting that, so does Garmin and tomtom.

sometimes I have taken addresses from my contacts and it goes right through. Other times I hit a contacts address, and then it goes to city/state, street, etc...

hit or miss.

Damn... I keep going back and forth. I was pretty sure I was going to get TomTom but now that a few people spoke up for Navigon...

Maybe I'll give Navigon a try. What the heck, it's only money right? :-(

does navigon also use IQ routes or is that just a TOMTOM option

Always the smartest, fastest route with IQ Routes™*

Despite posted speed limits, traffic traveling along a road at 8 a.m. moves at a different pace than it does at 2 p.m. Actual traffic speed is affected by rush hour, traffic light changes, pedestrian traffic, day of the week, and more. Only TomTom offers exclusive technology that evaluates routes based on actual traffic speeds, rather than posted speed limits, and will recommend the fastest route for the time of the day. *Feature available in the US and Canada only.

i use navigon all the time and i have nothing bad to say about it. i think the general consensus is that navigon is preferred over tom tom by a little.

i think the bells and whistles help.. traffic cam is a nice feature that is pretty helpful. i also like traffic live, i dont understand the on screen information, but if it has to reroute me, it does so automatically and does a good job of it.

Anyone else receive the email from Navigon for 50% off for FreshMaps?

for a single fee, you´ll receive map updates much more frequently than before
you will get quarterly map updates from experts,
for a period of at least two years
upgrade to the North American map for customers with U.S. Central, U.S. East, U.S. West, USA or Canada map
updated speed limits, road signs and much more

Is this the same as the add-on FreshMaps XL North America which still has a price of $24.99 when linked from the Extras menu? Will I only get charged for 12.49 if I purchase this from the phone or are these two different products?

Tomtom USA is now on sale for $31.99. It makes the choice between Tomtom and Navigon a bit more difficult.

Just noticed that as well ... oh crap ... now what ... haha

navigon U.S.A -> 29.99
TOMTOM U.S.A -> 31.99

either of these applications at ~$30 is a great deal. much better than a stand a lone and you have it at all times! cant go wrong with either!!

Garmin N. America is now 29.99 today only. This is $10 less than navigon and tom tom and as of right now map updates are free. I am seriously considering this app, I have tried navigon and tom tom in the past and like navigon. I wonder how this is.
