Do the cradles / hardware TomTom proposes to sell in addition to their software for the iPhone add any functionality aside from external speakers, I wonder?

I am tempted to buy the Navigon software ... but probably will wait til a few reviews trickle in. Best to wait and see really - as TomTom's own release is pending and consumers can make informed choices based on differences between the two packages.

TomTom has said that the cradle has its own GPS chip which it will use instead, and they claim will be more accurate than the built-in GPS. Not sure though if that would only be utilized when using the TomTom software (i.e. if you were using Navigon or something else and mounted it in the cradle, if it would still utilize the cradle's GPS - somehow I doubt it).

This looks pretty sweet. If they hold true to their word about free updates, then this is a bargain at $70.
There's been no new updates for the month-old European version so far - badly needed as well - so don't hold your breath over there.

As an aside, WTF is going on with TomTom? Over six weeks now since 'available very soon, this summer' was announced. There's a fine line between teasing and annoying your prospective customer base.

It doesn't say this anywhere, but I'm curious does this integrate with music playing from the phone. The TomTom demo at WWCD said that if you were playing music it would fade out momentarily when there were directions to give. Will this one do the same?

Has anyone bought this and can confirm that it does allow you to play music while you're in the app? This is a make or break feature for me...

Navigon uses Naviteq and TomTom uses TeleAtlas.

I don't care how great the Tom software is, every TeleAtlas map product I have used blows giving good directions. Try using Google maps to get a good route.

I'm thankful TomTom outbid Garmin for TeleAtlas.

To each their own I guess - I have both a TomTom Go 720 and have used Google Maps sometimes, and have more often than not been pleased with the routes it comes up with.

As I understand it though, the routes have more to do with the routing engines that TomTom, Garmin, etc. come up with, don't they? I mean, if you somehow grafted a TeleAtlas map into a Garmin device, I'm pretty sure the Garmin routing would still be the same.

Yes, you can... however, I think the current version doesn't mute the music when a voice prompt occurs.

I really like the Navigon interface... much more so than any of the TomTom devices I've seen/used. However, I'm probably going to wait until closer to August 15th to make a purchase decision on the off-chance we either get more info from TomTom, or actually see it released in the App Store for comparison.

Thanks, Nightstorm. For those interested, I found this link of FAQ: (this link takes you directly to the music question) http://faq.navigon.com/opencms/inte...topicId_1=170&topicId_2=10714&pager.offset=10

The FAQ says that a future update will mute the music when a voice prompt occurs. That's enough for me. I'm taking the plunge right now!

This should really put the pressure on TomTom to get theirs out well ahead of August 15th. Many of us are going to hold out, but closer to the 15th that price is going to be aweful tempting for something that is already here versus something we can't seen yet. My guess is they'll have it out soon as they'll otherwise be losing a fair amount of sales.

"German GPS firm Navigon has finally released MobileNavigator North America [App Store, $69.99 through August 15th and $99.99 thereafter], one of the first full-featured turn-by-turn GPS navigation applications for the iPhone"

The Europe and UK version have been out for a month. What about sygic? That's been out a while now.

But is that free updates for the application only? I can't imagine free updates for the maps.

The GPS is more than good enough

Ok, I have the European version and I can tell you something:

- The reception is good, there is absolutely no problem with not knowing where I am. Quite accurate and doesn't pose any problem for me.

- The maps are old, or at least bad. Google maps has much more streets. For instance, Navigon doesn't find my house street in Lisbon. Ok, it's a very small street, but still, it's in the center of Lisbon, the capital, and the street is not a new one by any standard. And don't event get me started on the villages ... the maps, at least for Portugal are BAD.

- The highway directions are great. It helps a lot in choosing your lane and your exit. Really cool.

- The POIs are annoying to say the least. And, you have no way to turn them off! What are this guys thinking about? In the center of Lisbon, with so many POIs around, not only the app gets slow but it's also quite distracting to have all that stuff around. I don't need directions to all the restaurants, teatres, schools, etc, all the time in my display.

Am I the only one that thinks this is a bit of a rip off? Keep in mind they have zero hardware costs, zero packaging costs, zero manufacturing costs, and pretty much zero advertising costs.

Guess what? NAVTEQ data is not cheap. Costs have to be recovered somehow, right?

I just want a GPS that doesn't just have Turn-by-turn but TEXT-TO-SPEECH! This bit about just saying "turn in 500 feet" just doesn't cut it for me. I need for it to say the name of the street to turn on!
I'm hoping TOM TOM will have this. I already wasted $35 on G-Map which doesn't have it.

...and Mexico?

Funny how companies tend to forget  (together with MacRumors) that North America includes Mexico... like it or not...

TTS is supposidly coming in a free update. It's on the feature roadmap, along with route planning, and i believe MyRoutes as well.

Am I the only one that thinks this is a bit of a rip off? Keep in mind they have zero hardware costs, zero packaging costs, zero manufacturing costs, and pretty much zero advertising costs. and who knows the quality of the antenna in the iphone for decent GPS reception. Plus you need to buy a mount to get the same use as a stand alone GPS unit. Before the mount, this costs $100 (assuming you dont buy right away)?! You can get a garmin stand alone for right around or less than that.

Now, Im sure someone here will say "if you dont like it dont buy it." Given this is a forum for opinions, I will go ahead and give mine. I will def not be buying this at this price. Not from Garmin, TomTom, and certainly from a non household name like "Navigon."

Bring the price to something like $30-$40 and I will consider it. Anything above that and I will stick the proven stand alone units, plus my iphones built in gmaps and gps chip for non turn by turn directions in a pinch.

You forget the software development costs AND the fact that Navigon has to pay the map people for the licenses. Those aren't cheap. I hear they are about $50 per update.

Also Navigon is quite well known within mobile GPS software app makers.

Update is always free with Navigon. That is why I have bought one of their device in the past, which I still used and updated lately

It remains to be seen if it will continue to be true for their devices --- since they got out of the US market. No point of buying a GPS device with the "promise" of future map updates when they are getting out of the market.

No realtime traffic, gas prices, POI, or weather updates? All this 3G data service, and nothing to grab from the cloud when you're navigating?

Hmm...

I'll pull the trigger no earlier than August 12th, right before the price goes up.

Live realtime traffic updates and live auto traffic re-routing are subscription-based premium services everywhere else.

i know right! i hope is in spanish, i live in the US but i do prefer our beautiful spanish language. ATT navigator gives voice directions in spanish so i hope this think too

Perhaps their memories are affected by reality. No one except horny, spoiled college students really want to go to Mexico, right? Mexico can't even keep it's OWN "citizens" home.
