Link not working - crashing Safari

The article suggests this has been released, but I cannot find it on the iTunes Store, and the link from various web pages referencing it causes Safari to crash for me. Very strange.
I see the Europe version and a North America LITE version (free) on iTunes only. Is this thing available or not?? I went to Navigon's site, and there's a link to the new North America app also, and that even crashes Safari on my system.

UPDATE: while I can't find it if I search iTunes, using Firefox opened iTunes and pulled it up for me. Downloading now.

try to download the lite version and it will tell ya that that app will become the paid one

Thing is a bit of the "killer app" of the tomtom iphone app is the cradle. That's why I'm waiting, and I'll gladly pay a few bucks for the hardware that goes with it. Without a charging system in the car, I try to minimize my GPS/map use currently, and having something that will let me charge and play music through the stereo (assuming it has a line-out of some sort built into it) would be awesome. Otherwise I feel like I'm left with an app that I still have to have sitting on the seat beside me or have to use a cheap mount or hack something together. I just wish tomtom would have *some* sort of update on price, availability, etc.

well i have that already! my pioneer stereo let me play via USB (higher quality sound) and charges too. i have a cradle to fit nice and securely there. while using att navigator i receive a call i just answer using pioneers bluetooth! i so cool i enjoy driving more.

I'll be waiting for TomTom until I make a choice. I like how their accessory has power and built in speaker phone and additional GPS etc. Did they say that it can route your sound through the car stereo system too for iPod playing???

I think TomTom will offer the app for around the same price but that cradle will cost an arm and a leg. No doubt.

well i went to radio shack and ask for one ( to buy) the rep suggest me to go att and then say " oh wait fallow me please" we went to the back of his car he pulled the cradle and say here u can have it! " i dont use it no more because i got a stand alone Garmin and this was for my treo. he just gave it to me. just look for one around or go to att.

Iphone 3G has very poor GPS chip.

I have used many cell phones with GPS in addition to stand alone GPS units. The GPS chip in the Iphone is by far the poorest I have ever seen in a phone. It is very laggy and cannot be used for anything other then getting your location. The SIRF 3 chips in the Blackberrys are far superior than that of the iphone. This is why Tom Tom is releasing a stand alone GPS module. Then again the chip is made by Infineon (Inferioron) so what would you expect.

What pioneer stereo though? Or is it just an el-generic one that has USB input and bluetooth?

How do I use it safely while I'm driving?

My question isn't specific to this application, but to iPhone navigation apps in general.

That's why the TomTom accessory is so appealing, it mounts your iPhone to the windshield or dashboard and has an enhanced GPS sensor as well as a charger and microphone for bluetooth. The TomTom is the way to go, but this app seems pretty decent.

I'll accept that I'm a little biased because Google Maps is more than fine for me - I've used it on tons of road trips throughout the southeast and it's been spot on - but $100...or even $70? I thought AT&T was nuts when they came out with their $10 a month stuff. I used to have Verizon and VZ Navigator and I thought that I'd never pay again when I got my iPhone due to the FREE Google Maps. I'd be willing to pay $30-40 one time and then maybe $10 a year for map updates but $70? No way. Maybe for some of you all that is justified given your usage/needs but not in this camp. Too expensive.

Wanna Bet.....

....that Tom Tom has already downloaded this App and is going thru it with a fine tooth comb? They are comparing it with their App, feature by feature, to price theirs accordingly. If they are smart, they will announce theirs in a few days. Every day they wait is more lost sales.

Live realtime traffic updates and live auto traffic re-routing are subscription-based premium services everywhere else.

Premium or not these are services that we expect and want, even if we had to pay extra per month for them.

I personally won't buy a GPS application for my iPhone until it has these sorts of features. The Dash GPS had these features almost two years ago so it should absolutely be possible with the faster processor in the iPhone 3G(s) to do the same thing.

Give me real time traffic and traffic avoidance rerouting and give me useful POI information like gasoline prices in a traffic application that doesn't suck and I'm there!!

The Navigon application looks great but is lacking these key features. :(

Many of us have paid over $300-$400 for standalone GPS systems for our vehicles. I'm a telecomm systems engineer and frequently travel to addresses I am not familiar with, either in or out of my home state. I require a GPS to actually help me navigate in unfamiliar territory with realtime voice guidance.

I have about 10 friends with iPhones and NONE of them use the maps application to try to navigate while driving. The GPS is slow to update, doesn't show you lane entry information, doesn't announce anything and takes your eyes off of the road which is extremely dangerous!!.

Every time a GPS application announcement is posted at Macrumors, Engadget or Gizmodo there is always someone piping up that they don't see what the big deal is, they just use Google Maps, etc.

Get a clue, Google Maps is not real time route guidance and I feel sorry for the people driving around peering at the screen trying to figure out where they are going without killing themselves or other drivers.

http://www.frys.com/product/5820173

it comes with a mic to install where ever u like.

Awesome, thanks man! I had actually just found the DEH-P710BT and DEH-P610BT on the pioneer site. Might be getting time to upgrade my system one of these days.... esp with in car calling and iphone connection. Right now I have an ipod kit that only works on the "classic" ipods and nanos, not the newest gen.

agree as a young driver i have to be 100% focus on the road not trying to read google maps directions. i just listen voice commands and look the att nav once in a while

it also has A2DP that once you are in the car it auto connects and ready to rock n' roll but i prefer USB

I have a Navigon 8110, and I'm not sure I would buy this thing. It's a great looking device (brushed aluminum) and the graphics are best in class from an aesthetical point of view, but hopeless from a practical point of view. They're much too small and detailed. TomTom's butt ugly graphics may seem oversized, but they're great when you're driving... just a quick glance and you have all the information you need. With Navigon you find yourself squinting at the miniscule type going "umm... OK, I think that's a '1', and that might be a '3' or an '8'..." Now imagine what those guys would do with an iPhone screen with the same resolution but half the size. Do you really want to be driving while holding an iPhone in one hand and a magnifying glass in the other?

Edit: Ah, guess I should've looked at the official mockup. Yep, typical Navigon with tiny graphics... FFS, this is to be used while driving! Those "OK" and "Cancel" buttons should take up the whole screen, one green and one red so that you can press them without taking your eyes off the road.

This looks pretty sweet. If they hold true to their word about free updates, then this is a bargain at $70.

The article listed "free update" sounds singular to me and is this update for their software capabilities or revised road maps or both? And will there be more than one free update?

The standard deal when you buy a Navigon device is 2 years worth of free updates. The idea (I guess) being that you'll buy a new device when the deal expires.

This may or may not apply here... the hardware devices have limited life but this is software-only and could last many years across multiple generations of iPhones... shrug.
