Anyone tried both X road gmaps and navigon? I have x road and absolutely hate the way I have to input an address. It's so f ing stupid, I want my money back because of it.

Anywho, is navigon's address input the same? Do I have to select a city, then the street number, then the house number. God it pisses me off just thinking about it.

They're the same. I bought XRoad's G-Map California, and it's the best $20.00 I've spent in a while.
I also downloaded the free version of Navigon so I could compare the maps. I actually prefer G-Map in use,
and it seems to more accurately reflect the turns on winding roads (for instance Highway 1 in Marin County).

While the back-asswards input was annoying at first, I've gotten used to it, and it's not a big deal...

Cool, thanks. I guess I'll stick with the x road. Other than the address thing I've been happy with it, especially for the price.

there is a different way to do it

Have you tried to search by phone number? I know what you mean about it being irritating to search by address. Just remember to not enter "1" before the area code .That "1" is the country code and because the telephone was invented in the US....We're Number One :)

What happens when you get a phone call? Will the program have to restart? I like how on the Pre it will just move it over to another card when you receive a phone call and you can reopen the card and be right on track. On top of that Sprint is giving it for free.

You take the call and it relaunches the APP when your done. Navigation resumes where you left off.

My concern with any of these (GPS turn-by-turn solutions) is this:

I have a window mount for my 3G. Fine.
I have a 12v charging adapter for my 3G. Fine.

But if I run the iphone without auto-lock, playing music, connected to a 3G network, bluetooth on for my car's handsfree device, with location services on, and Google Maps running (with the screen on medium brightness), my phone will eat battery faster than it can be charged.

Oh the charging sign shows, but if I stop the car after an hour or two, the battery can be drained; sometimes quite a bit.

I don't know how anyone (tom tom or otherwise) will get around that.

I keep location services off most of the time because it drains the battery so quickly.

Ehh I just tried that - Had navigon running with the ipod playing in the background. After about 5 hours I had 59% battery left - and my phone was a 80% when I plugged it into the car. I think it will be ok for long trips ...

Wait, so those who d/l'd the "lite" version of Navigon now have themselves a free fully featured Navigon GPS software?

No way that's possible...

I really don't know. I saw it on iTunes when I looked earlier today. It was a 1.29 GB download; pretty big for a lite version. I looked again after reading that post and the lite version was gone...and it's still gone!

what stops one from simply jailbreaking and ssh'ing the app onto the iphone.

username account?

This is why Tom Tom is releasing a stand alone GPS module.
What stand alone GPS module? You talking about the car kit? It doesn't contain its own GPS unit/receiver, it does however contain a GPS signal booster (not sure if passive or active) that improves the satellite signals that your iPhone gets.

The POIs are annoying to say the least. And, you have no way to turn them off! What are this guys thinking about? In the center of Lisbon, with so many POIs around, not only the app gets slow but it's also quite distracting to have all that stuff around. I don't need directions to all the restaurants, teatres, schools, etc, all the time in my display.

This will be fixed in an announced update. You can then diisable POIs and turn them on by category, e.g. only gas stations etc.

nahh hes talking about a app called G-maps that look like a toy. just search at the app store

If you take a look at the Navigon video MacRumors posted, you'll change your tune; the g-map (by x-road) app looks identical to the Navigon. I have the g-map, the updated version, and it works. Same price for the complete US (if you need that) as the Navigon introductory offer. I would like to read a thorough comparison/review of the two, though.

I have G-Map and yes, it does look allot like it. G-Maps speed indicator fluctuates too much. Anyone know if this happens with Navigon?

By the way, the lite version is still just the lite version. I tried it just a few minutes ago for those wondering a few posts back.

When the app is updated to include TTS street names I'll re-evaluate. By then, perhaps the TomTom app will be available, too, so I can compare and contrast.

What happens when somebody calls you while you are navigating? Will the navigation app just quit for the duration of the call? How is one supposed to follow the instructions then? Also as noted in the previously linked review, it takes about one minute for this Navigon software to startup and fix the GPS signal.

I don't have an iPhone yet so sorry if my concerns sound silly.

This sounds good and all but $69.99 ???, hell ***** NO
I will never pay $69.99 for an iPhone app, NEVER!

And we're supposed to care why? Just because you don't value good applications on your phone doesn't mean the rest of us follow your lead. The $.99 pricepoint has really hurt the app store and filled it with so much crapware it's hard to find anything now. :(

The lite version was that big because it downloaded all the maps to your phone... the big limitation of the lite one was no turn-by-turn route planning. Basically let you play with the interface and see how POIs worked. I downloaded this when it was released and it definitely did not turn into the full version for free.

While I don't have the full version (yet), I'd expect it to work similar to the AT&T Navigator -- exit the program when you answer a call, but automatically restart the last route when the call is finished. It took 15-30 seconds (depending on signal to download map info and get GPS lock).

I bought the app yesterday and am very impressed with it. As for your question, I did a test while driving into work today where I called my voicemail while navigating. Immediately the program closed and went to the phone screen. I then hit the home button and restarted Navigon. The program pick up right where it left off while on the phone. The only thing may throw some people off is that the directions then go through bluetooth (that's how I have the phone connected to my car).

One thing that I did notice that if the iPhone is set to silent mode, the voice directions are not going to be heard. You may be able to set the phone to silent while on the call to stop the people on the other line from hearing the directions. I can see how it would be annoying. I'll have to try that one another time.

Has anyone bought this and can confirm that it does allow you to play music while you're in the app? This is a make or break feature for me...

Yes, I have bought it and I can confirm you can play music while in the app. You can either start the music and then launch Navigon, or if you have a Kensington (for example) kit with remote command, you can start/stop the music, go to the next/previous track when you want.

To answer to some other questions, Navigon doesn't have text-to-speech but the voice indicates the number of the road (for example, it can say "In 3 miles, please turn right on the H234", but it can't say "In 3 miles, please turn right on Kennedy's avenue".

Someone in this forum said that it doesn't have POIs. It's wrong, it has a lot of POIs. What is true is that you can't add your own ones at the moment (should be possible in a future release).

I bought this for the UK about a month agao as someone nicked my Tom Tom and I have been very pleasantly surprised. Like others on here I wasn't convinced that the iPhone GPS was up to the job as it can be very jumpy and flakey receptionwise when using Google maps but in the Navigon app it works really really well.

The mapping graphical display is actually superior to Tom Tom's software in my opinion though the Tom Tom wins hands down for options and full post code search. I hope that this will be added to the Navigon app soon.

Someon asked above whether it speaks road names and the answer is yes in some cases. It will say "Turn left onto the M1" which again my old Tom Tom did not do.

Is it as fast and accurate as a dedicated device? No, occasionally going round a roundabout the very slight delay can be an issue but for 95% of the time it is accurate and fast enough to navigate easily.

Positives for me are the price and convenience, great graphics, voice instructions.

Negatives, slightly slower than dedicated unit, search is a bit clunky, no full postcode search, limited options, no traffic etc, cannot figure out how to route voice instructions through bluetooth to stereo, voice instructions sometimes too quiet through iphone.

For the £40 i paid for it I'd say it was fantastic value and can only improve with updates.

I was going to buy this but now I think I'll just wait for Tomtom. Hopefully the navigon release will accelerate Tomtom. Every day that passes represents lost sales for Tomtom (and they know this). If Tomtom isn't out just on the last day of Navigons promo pricing expiration, I'll just buy the Navigon software.

The clock is ticking Tomtom.
