What happens when you get a phone call? Will the program have to restart? I like how on the Pre it will just move it over to another card when you receive a phone call and you can reopen the card and be right on track. On top of that Sprint is giving it for free.

I was just going to say that. Loads more beautiful than most US states and I live in the US!!! Ignorance at it's finest.

To prevent some of the repeat questions which have been answered on the Navigon iphone website:

http://www.navigon.com/site/int/en/products/navigation_software/iphone
Free Update will be available in July! (They are referring to the Europe version)

* Additional languages: Portugese, Czech, Polish, Turkish, Croatian, Romanian, Slovakian, Greek and Russian (GUI und Audio)
* NAVIGON's route planning function known from the companies PND line that enables users to plan a route with several destinations
* Safety cameras (not for all countries)
* Additional map view options (now displays street names in 3D view, optional points of interest (POI) display)
* Call POI function (call the number of a POI and save it to your contacts)
* Optimized volume control when using the NAVIGON navigation and the integrated iPod function of the iPhone at the same time

Even more features!

* More functions such as TMC and text-to-speech will follow in late summer.

Looks like Text to speech might not be free, by the way, in the video that shows/says "exit onto I-5 South" IS text to speech, but it is only programmed to say "I", numbers and direction (south, north...etc). This current version does NOT say street names, but as the above text says, it's coming...but maybe you have to pay.

There is also no data, this app is 1.2 gigs with maps and does not download the maps "while you drive" over the mobile network. So if you are in the middle of nowhere, it will still work!

wow i did not knew that i does not says the street names, i just bought it. ill have to see how i adapt to that?

i dont think apple would like to pay maps fees, but google has open source maps. they problably would get into the business

Google's maps are not open source; they are provided by TeleAtlas. They would need to pay additional licensing to allow turn-by-turn directions. I'd be curious to see if an ad-based navigation application would cover the costs.

I believe you DON'T since the maps are loaded onto the iphone, and the GPS uses real GPS if you have a 3GS

Questions are never stupid, only answers can be.

No you don't need one, you have the maps preloaded: this explains the 2gb of the app.

I bought g-maps for a 10 day motorcycle trip and worked very well. I had to have an offline solution since a lot of the areas I was driving in did not have ATT service.

There are a few things I don't like with g-maps but they seem to improve their software so I hope the updates will fix a few issues. ONe thing that bugs me is they could label the streets more on the screen. Many times I found myself having to zoom up on a road to see the name. Also it does not show the name of cites on the map screen like my garmin does. The data with G-Maps seems to be a few years out of date and lead me to one restaurant that moved to a different location several years ago.

If TomTom doesn't get their act together by August 15th then I'm going with Navigon.
...

That's exactly what I was thinking (assuming this gets decent reviews and I can find a reasonable dash/window mount for my iPhone).

The TomTom product seems like it would be a better overall setup for me (enhanced gps & speaker, charging, mount included)... but the Navigon discount will be too good to pass up if the TomTom isn't at least in sight.

Come on TomTom, at least throw your hat in the ring and announce price and availability.

Especially since the enhanced gps TomTom offers might not be so useful. The gps in my 3Gs seems to work fine.

I've been wondering this exact same thing for some time now. No answers seem forthcoming so far, though...

what about G-Map?? they were the first full featured GPS app when they upgraded to voice turn by turn shortly after the release of the 3.0 firmware. FWIW... G-Map works really well and is cheaper than Navigon (well, same price at Navigon's introductory offer)

That's true, I believe G-map was the first at any price scheme (one-time or subscription) in North America. It doesn't cover all the US and Canada at a single price, however, but rather at three upfront prices (one app each for US East, US West and the just-released Canada). When I bought them it was $19.99 for each, and so I have all North America for less than Navigon's price.

G-map is probably not quite as slick as Navigon, but my primary interest in these programs is more for REAL (i.e., NAVTEQ not OpenMap) offline maps than for actual turn-by-turn guidance.

What GPS Chip in iPhone 3G S?

Does anyone know what is the GPS chip in the iPhone 3G S?

With Sygic, there is a lag, which is sort of fine on the freeway, but makes navigation hard on surface streets, where it tells you to turn AFTER you've passed the street you were supposed to turn on.

It also loses signal from time to time, in environments where it really should be fine.

The new update from Sygic has improved this a little.

I am wondering if it's the application, or if the iPhone's GPS chip just sucks.

My old HTC didn't really have these problems with iGo or TomTom.

On a different note: the Navigon Eastern Europe maps are pretty poor, and are missing villages and small towns. Kind of useless if you are driving around the countryside. Presumably, Western Europe would be better. Both TomTom are iGo have much better maps for Eastern Europe.

YOU are CRAZY to think it's a good price.

Remember, if you have a PHYSICAL TomTom then it's for you, your wife, your kid, whoever to use. But if you download this software it's on your iPhone, that's it and like heck you are can or will lend out your iPhone for the evening so person x can drive to location z. Seriously, it's offensive what they are charging for a limited product!

Huh, it's $70 for god's sake.

And if your wife, or mistress, or boyfriend, have an iPhone on the same account, you both (or three, or whatever,) get to have the app on your own iPhone for the price of one.

You can get a physical satnav for that price including charger and stand, it's no bargain to download a digital app for that amount. Don't be fooled or you're just another minion fueling the fire.

Battery Issues

My concern with any of these (GPS turn-by-turn solutions) is this:

I have a window mount for my 3G. Fine.
I have a 12v charging adapter for my 3G. Fine.

But if I run the iphone without auto-lock, playing music, connected to a 3G network, bluetooth on for my car's handsfree device, with location services on, and Google Maps running (with the screen on medium brightness), my phone will eat battery faster than it can be charged.

Oh the charging sign shows, but if I stop the car after an hour or two, the battery can be drained; sometimes quite a bit.

I don't know how anyone (tom tom or otherwise) will get around that.

I keep location services off most of the time because it drains the battery so quickly.

Shrug.... It's the market, dude....

I personally need this only when I travel, which means I am willing to pay a little extra, for the convenience of carrying only one device. BTW, when traveling with my old HTC, I kept it plugged in while driving with GPS on, and never had battery draining issues. It should be the same with the iPhone.

But, if I really needed something portable for my car (I actually use a built-in), I'd probably get a dedicated unit, since in my experience so far, the iPhone's GPS chip may be a bit on the weak side, anyway.

Thinking about picking this up. I've had a Navigon 7100 for quite a while now and it's great, aside from a few quirks. I'd buy another Navigon unit but they stopped selling to the NA market. :(

EDIT: No text to speech FTL. I'll wait for that, and will also wait to see how good the routing is.
