I am pleased with the Garmin in my car so I will not be needing another GPS but if this came out last month then maybe I would have got this instead since that was when I got my Garmin

i did not like it! first yerstoday i had to go somewhere and it send me downtown! 9 miles away from where u should be. it does not says street names, doesnt pause music when giving directions. i was more comfortable with Att nav

Voice

I don't like her voice sounds like a smoker. Gross. I hope this is the german version and ours has a bit of a sexier tone smokeless.

I didn't like G Maps at all!
It told me to turn right when I was on a really long freeway over pass then it told me to turn left a little bit later while still on the overpass. THERE ARE NO TURNS ON THE OVERPASS! Then it told me to stop at the toll gate when I had already passed the toll gate 2 miles back. It never did catch up to where I was so I just turned it off at that point. It would just randomly tell me to turn off while I was on the freeway with quite a ways to go to my destination. This is in well known Southern long ago established California freeways. It was useless. I really would like my money back if I could figure out how to do that.

This stand-alone GPS module:
http://gps.about.com/b/2009/06/10/more-details-on-tomtom-for-iphone-mount-has-its-own-gps-chip.htm

Note: "...when the iPhone is docked to the mount, it relies on the mount's GPS..."

Interesting ... at WWDC we chatted with them in passing and those folks vaguely implied it wasn't it own GPS receiver and of course that the dash unit was optional. The goal of it was to improve signal reception while in vehicle and in city areas with poor line of sight. They may have change their plans since then.

Doing this would allow them, in theory, to support the iPod Touch when docked to the car kit.

who knows the quality of the antenna in the iphone for decent GPS reception.

Anyone who wants to know the quality of the GPS reception can download the free Navigon Lite program. It won't give you directions, but it will show you where it thinks you are.

They pulled the 'lite' version, didn't they?

Also, TomTom's soluton with the GPS receiver in the dock would allow (as someone else said) the iPod Touch to work as a GPS device.

Brilliant.

Just think of the increased marked share they could have as a result of this. No you wouldn't be able to access live updates (traffic, etc) on the iPod Touch, but for basic navigation a dock with GPS integrated into it would be great marketing move for TomTom.

Lite sucks

I got the LITE version which has swiss maps...
maps are ok, very good POIs...

However, the GPS signal is very weak and hangs every few seconds.
After reading their iphone FAQ, and resetting my iphone (took my 3 hours in total), it still sucks...

I guess I will not be buying this, nor use this iphone as a GPS. Switching to normal GPS app in iphone, I see a strong signal. Therefore I think it is an app problem and not device issue.

Does anyone know if this will give you an alternate route to change to or you can specify not to use the highway? I drive to work on a highway full of construction and more often than not, there seems to be a wreck that has shut the highway down. If this will give me alternate back roads to take, I'm all over it.

I'm also concerned with the dash mounts for the iPhone as my radar detector gets very, very hot in the summer and I would assume that the iPhone would get the same way after a longer drive.

I tried a Navigon PND for a while, side-by-side a Garmin Nuvi, and didn't like it at all. So far my favorite has been the the Nuvi. Haven't tried a TomTom, so I'm interested in seeing how the iPhone version stacks up against the Nuvi.

well i have that already! my pioneer stereo let me play via USB (higher quality sound) and charges too. i have a cradle to fit nice and securely there. while using att navigator i receive a call i just answer using pioneers bluetooth! i so cool i enjoy driving more.

Do the voice commands go through your stereo via usb as well? in other words will the voice commands go through your car speakers?

sounds great.
can't wait for reviews.

but i couldn't help but to think, without a subscription or that sort of thing, wouldn't malicious users be able to download a version of this to a jailbroken device?
at $99 dollars, thats a big deal. I hope there's a system to prevent users with cracked apps from accesing functionality.

Too late, I've already seen the cracked version of this floating around on the internets...

And we're supposed to care why? Just because you don't value good applications on your phone doesn't mean the rest of us follow your lead. The $.99 pricepoint has really hurt the app store and filled it with so much crapware it's hard to find anything now. :(

Did i say "follow my lead" you dumb sheep ?, Does it hurt you if i don't wanna pay $70 for a phone app ?

Sure, it can calculate a new route if you set your route preference to avoid higways. Or, if you just go to "wrong direction" long enough, it will calculate a new route automatically (once it has first suggested a U-turn few times).

Do I have to select a city, then the street number, then the house number. God it pisses me off just thinking about it.

You can also select a contact and use its address for navigation. It is a very cool feature if you have stored your address data to the address book anyway.
