With tomtom, Garmin(the right version), and Navigon. you don't need cell service or internet service. It's basically like owning a stand alone GPS. There is a built in GPS chip in the phone.

Really? Hmm, so can I even take the SIM card out? Will it work?

I believe it will work, but you'll have a pop-up in the middle of the screen saying no sim. When I go to japan I put a in-activated sim in my wife's phone because of that.

That's what I wanted to know. I got a 4GS with microSIM and I want to use old 3Gs as a GPS, so I can use old AT&T inactivated SIM...

Thanks bro

Yup, as long as you have a gps program. Like Navigon, tomtom or the full version of garmin. You'll know by the size of it. Should be more than 1 gig, probably closer to 2 if you have the whole usa

Yes, the GPS does not come through the data. I have no SIM card at all in my iPhone presently, and GPS works just fine. I have to load up maps in advance (using wifi) but it hold onto them long enough for a particular trip, and the GPS overlays onto those.

There is a popup when you first boot up saying there is no SIM, but you just say "okay" and it doesn't complain again. No biggie.

navigon is taking the votes all the way ... i read about the new FLOW update ... wonder when that will be ... maybe better to wait for update before u buy??

with navigon can u select an address from contacts? with the free nav apps i tried waze and mapquest , u cannot choose addresses from contacts

i just found this that u can try yourself
http://www.navigon.com/portal/int/NAVIGON_Flow/index.html?page=testTrack

from reading from the site ... u can input address from your address book

can u also pick a route based on your travel method? biking, running, driving?

This morning there was an update to the TomTom app, I am not sure how often Navigon updates, but I think at least twice a gear TomTom has maps and features updates.

Wondering if anybody has updated to 1.9 and new feelings? Now tomtom becomes a universal app as well. I am guessing Navigon 2 will be out soon as well. Hope there will be a price drop so I can grab one

I just downloaded the update, but haven't checked it out yet.

If offline maps are a big selling point for you try Navigon. Navigon just updated their app and they now allow users to just download state specific apps. It makes the 2.0 gig app a lot lighter.

They made the interface more streamlined as well.

My major selling point has always been traffic and efficient routing. I have both Tomtom and Navigon. I have been running them both simultaneously since the 4s came out. So far they are neck and neck. If anyones interested I'll post my thoughts on both apps as time goes on.

I have been a longtime Navigon fan, but this new approach of having to download one state at a time and do it off the phone instead of on my Mac (and then transfer to the phone) has be just about ready to jump. I have been downloading for hours. Then the states that I checked magically became "unchecked" and I had to start them over. Lots of fun . . .

Can you compare the traffic?

Here are some of my updates. I have bought all three: Tomtom Garmin and Navigon. My feeling is that the routing algorithm on Garmin is slightly better. It is the same as my Garmin standalone unit. But two problems: voice quality on Garmin is not very good compared with other two, also the voice prompts tend to come very late so I miss the turn on it several times. The interface is nice though, but I cannot recommend it for now.

Tomtom is decent although it occasionally gives some weird directions (instead of turn left it ask me to turn right and make a u turn), but overall very nice. It gives voice guidance well before the turn, and tells you stay which lane also shows junction view etc. It never fails me during all my trips. I just tried the traffic (one month 2.99) seems the estimation of time is very accurate and saves me some time in LA.

Navigon I just got and tried a few times, the route seems good and interface is better than Tomtom in my opinion. The voice quality is also good. Haven;t tried traffic yet but I heard it is worse than Tomtom.

So can anyone tell something about the traffic?

I use Navigon. I love that when searching for POI, I can press the "Google" button, enter the name of the business or whatever I'm looking for, and the s/w does the rest. No more spending time entering specific street addresses.

Yes I am Interested in additional info on navigon. I have been using waze but missing exit numbers and sometimes tells me to get off exit names that I don't see. Does navigon offer traffic for the $15 application for certain region or traffic is extra? Did navigon update the iPhone application yet to have the new interface like android and windows version has?

I bought both TomTom and Navigon.

What I was curious about is if I bought Tom Tom US (standalone), instead of Tom Tom US + Canada.

But then at a LATER STAGE, decided I want Canada, would I double pay? Or just pay the difference?

Sorry I'm not answering your question, but can you please give me a comparison of the two? I am honestly about to purchase either in the next 48 hours, i am leaning towards navigon b/c of the whole dl one state at a time (i'm only interested in one state) but i have heard the tom has better traffic/routes

For me the traffic on the Tomtom has been pretty decent. There are some aggravating missteps though. For example, the app does not detect traffic on the Northern State Pkwy, period. Every time I calculate a route I have to tell the app to avoid the NSP.

Im going to install my navigon app again to do a true comparison.

i havent used TOMTOM but i must say that navigon doesnt always give u the best directions from my experience. The UI is real nice on navigon vs TOMTOM but i think directions are better from TOMTOM from what i am reading.

so is there a general consensus that the traffic on navigon is horrible, and that tomtom has the best traffic ?

I don't understand how "the look" of a GPS app matters. I could care less what it looks like if it can guarantee to reduce my commute time and keep me out of traffic I'm sold.

I have both tomtom and garmin apps. They are both great. Garmin more user friendly.

Both get me where I need to go. Occasionally missing some locations. But that's why I also coordinate with google maps.

As for traffic. If you are a local you should know your traffic points. I really don't know why people are so hung up on traffic.

I lived in the wash dc area. Probably the second or third worst traffic congestion in the USA. Having traffic reports is useless. Cause it's either u are stuck on the Beltway/66/270. There's no easy way to get around. U can take local roads but those are congested as well. So traffic is useless to me. If I take side route other people bail to those routes and you potentially end up taking even longer than just staying your normal route.

The GPS traffic direction alternative cannot account for human behavior changes to traffic.

First word in the second sentence is your clue. Not everyone shares your preference. And "could care less" means the opposite of what you mean.

If you are a local you should know your traffic points. I really don't know why people are so hung up on traffic.
1. Traffic changes day to day and even hour to hour. Traffic points don't cover incidents that affect traffic.
2. Some of us travel with our GPS apps.
3. Same point as above applies -- not everyone has your preference. The more information I have the better equipped I am to make decisions. Obviously, YMMV.

@Djs621

Do you have any findings you could kindly share re: TomTom vs Navigon traffic? I'm particularly interested in your opinions as I am looking at what nav has the best traffic for driving in LI this summer.

Thank you in advance!
