I'm updating this thread because I found it very useful to hear people's usage opinions when deciding which North America app to go with. I ended up with TomTom and used it recently in rental cars over about 1,000 miles around NJ/NY/PA and it was flawless. Big plusses for me compared to various nav systems in high end cars I have owned were the speed of calculating and recalculating routes, the quality of the routes and especially the clarity of the spoken instructions, including lane guidance. Most of the time, we found we didn't even need to look at the screen, just listen and follow the voice guidance. Also, the 4S GPS performed outstandingly well, bearing in mind it was not even mounted on the windscreen. It was just sat in one of the cupholders next to the gearshift the whole time, and didn't lose the signal once. The camera warnings and constant speed limit display were nice to have, but not essential. It really did the job.

correcting map errors

i'm glad i found this thread, but one thing that is really important to me that hasn't been mentioned is the ability to fix map errors. i really wish that Google Navigation existed for the iPhone. i'd happily pay for it. google's map editor is by far the best i've seen. anybody can go in and, say, fix a one-way street or add a turn restriction. don't you get annoyed when your favorite GPS app always tells you to do something you can't? i'm thrilled that Waze now allows users to edit maps, but their interface is still in the teething phase.

here in miami, the waze maps have tons of errors and i'm not terribly inclined to fix them all, yet.

does anybody have experience with trying to get corrections made to the navigon or tomtom map data?

tia,
marc

update: it looks like navigon uses navteq map data and they have what looks like a decent interface to report problems at: http://mapreporter.navteq.com/ of course this means that you'd have to wait until the next map update gets pushed out to the navigon app :( google still wins big, here...

I didn't submit any corrections to TomTom but it did offer me a download of everything other users had submitted. So I guess it works, although without trying I'm not sure what you can submit for correction.

I ahve both TomTom and Navigon.....not much of a difference to me

TomTom has the POI's built into the app whereas Navigon has to access the internet to get the POI's

I just made a trip from Minneapolis to southern Missouri and back for a total of 1,600 miles mostly on state and US highways and off the freeways as much as possible. You run into a lot of non-cellular spots traveling that way. The Tom Tom app never failed as it does not need a cellular connection. I ran it mostly using my iPad in a case that hangs off the dash. The Tom Tom makes use of the extra screen size and it is also easier to glance at the information in larger fonts than smaller screen devices.

Very helpful thread! Thanks all.

Looking for a nav app to solve the problem of a new car without a nav system. I have MotionX and I have grown to like it. That said, what is most important to me is being able to use the nav when I have absolutely no data or cell connection at all. That is, *If only the battery on my iPhone or iPad is working I want to be able to use the nav!*

This being the case, it seems that my primary options include Navigon, TomTom, and perhaps Copilot. Is this accurate?

Also, someone noted above that the TomTom has POI built-in to the app whereas Navigon has to access the internet in order to access POIs. Is this correct?

Finally, assuming my priority is to get the best app I can that includes full offline ability, what would you recommend and why?

Thanks!

I can say this. I have navigon and the traffic addon is terrible. I live in NY and it never says there is trafficen i am sitting in traffic. At this point in time i probably wouldnt t even buy a navigation program with ios 6 around the corner with turn by turn.

Waze getting better and better

now that Waze has great Facebook integration (your events automagically show up in navigation destinations, you can see your friends' progress heading to the same place you are, etc) and was purchased by Google, i think they're going to be the game to beat for some time to come.
