Just a personal example...

I am into the printing industry... We print a lot of packaging materials for various industries... Once a client approached me for packaging needs for a new product they had developed... And we're exhibiting it in a 15 day exhibition of some sort... They wanted a huge amount of cartons to be delivered within the first three days of the exhibition... Which wasn't possible given my production constraints... I told them I would deliver certain amounts throughout the exhibition duration and that they definitely won't be making all the sales in the first five days... What my client told me so many years ago is what I've seen happening throughout with companies like Hyundai and Samsung... He said "We have just five days to sell our product as unique... Because on the first day there'll be a lot of Korean manufacturers taking samples and on the third day they'll be selling our exact product at half the price... Which we can't afford given our r & d costs... So we have just five days to make our profits..."

I don't mean to generalize... But that's straight from someone whose experienced it first hand...

And people stile confuses Korea with China.

Seriously - who cares about benchmarks? It's never ever come into a phone purchasing decision for me. The only people I see talking about it are iPhone fanboys on here.

Droitards used to... now, when iPhone is killing all droid phones, they stopped:D

Cultural differences..? Samsung, LG, HTC, and ASUS are asian companies; all cheat on the benchmarks. Apple and Moto are american companies and do not.

Add to this list such "Asian" companies as Nvidia and AMD. That said, calling this cheating is technically illiterate. It's simply a power management technique. It was demonstrated that, for example, Samsung Galaxy S4 uses the same high CPU frequency not only for benchmarks but also for camera app. Most ARM-based CPUs (including Apple processors) have some sort of power management where they control voltage or frequency depending on the situation to save power.

Using application lists to specify which resources should be used for different applications is not a new technique. For example, Nvidia Optimus used application names to indicate which applications require discrete GPU and which could be run on IGP.

Read the Anandtech article. Pretty much the only apps on the whitelist are benchmarking applications. It's cheating, plain and simple. It's probably illegal in some jurisdictions, as well.

Is it theoretically possible to "tweak" (or as some would say "optimize" :D ) the iPhone in a similar way so you would have comparable numbers based on the same conditions?

Maybe Apple just hasn't heard of this (or they aren't interested in reaching the highest technically possible results in benchmarks (disclaimer: for whatever reason)) "technique", while other competitors (disclaimer: for whatever reason) - seem to be quite familiar with it.

This just proves that the only phones I will own will be iPhones and Nexus devices. :p

Racial v. cultural, don't confuse the two.

This kind of topic has a potential to spin out of control if anyone suggests that it's "just the way things are over there" because of the PC joining of race and culture (they are NOT the same thing, or all "white" countries would be alike, as would all Black African countries, etc.). Because it's not PC to call a spade a spade, it makes it hard to discuss why this might be happening the way it's happening.

But what is a truth, is that the current culture in China and Korea is that lying, stealing and cheating to achieve is okay. It's not frowned upon. It's often done in concert with the government (Olympic cheating a prime example).

That is not to say that every corporation in the USA is clean nor every athlete, but simply that right now, lying cheating and stealing is publicly frowned upon, so if "caught" companies are shamed and must stop their tactics.

In Germany, it's even more entrenched in their culture and laws. Where in the USA, laws are lax when it comes to misrepresentation, in Germany they are more strict and enforceable. I believe they are stricter in Canada too, but if you watch anything involving Mike Holmes, you might think differently.

So it is not surprising that phones made in China and Korea are "copies" rather than innovations, and that they rig tests when they can. That's just the way to win, culturally, and it seems to be working for them.

What's interesting though is that, at least in China, when lying, cheating and stealing leads to death of innocents, then there is a sense of honor not shared in the west, one of self punishment, because it is only when another is harmed that they truly feel as if they have done anything wrong. In the USA, those who would act dishonestly are also the type who would do everything they can not to accept responsibility when the crap hits the fan.

It's one of the reasons Apple hasn't been strong in China even though their products are made there. What Apple does is try to keep the knock-offs in China, and use the laws of other countries to keep them out of those countries. Same goes for Samsung, but Apple has failed there.

No, it's more like: Don't look at benchmarks. Wait, why are you looking at benchmarks? Ok, you're looking at benchmarks. That's fine. Look, these two devices use the same processor but get different scores. Doesn't that seem funny? Wait, why are you still buying it? Yes, it will stop playing video when you look away to reflect on the fact you hate yourself and only feel fulfilled with a bigger number. It comes in gold now too! WEEEEEEE!

Or perhaps the lesson is that Samsung sure seems to lie a lot, perhaps I should buy an iPhone, Nokia, or Nexus branded phone instead.

Of course it's legal. Why would it be illegal? Is it ethical? Probably not.

Right. I don't see why folks are throwing up the illegal flag on this. When running a performance test, I WOULD want all of the OS power throttling turned off so I can see the raw performance of the device. Many folks running speed tests on PC's run the system as clean as they can and see how high they can get on the speed numbers.

To be in the right, the sellers of the device should state that performance and speed is based on operating conditions and is variable.

Nope, I mean people still confuses C. H. I. N. A. with K. O. R. E. A.

Perhaps geography isn't their strong points? Or China doesn't exist for these people? Korea is the only country in that part of the world for them I guess?

Perhaps you should word it like this, those damn Canadians, why do they want to go and blow up Syria! They should leave them alone and stay out of Iraq too! They think they Police the world and it's so funny how their government has fallen to pieces this week...

Well when your comments have a bit of a sense of racism you tend to typically stereotype all the people from one area of the planet under the same umbrella, despite being in different country's.

Perhaps you should word it like this, I consider Canadians to be EXACTLY the same as Americans because they are in the same area of the planet they must be the same because their lands are joined. They have got to be the same culture and mentality's and beliefs, they must all want to nuke everyone that doesn't have a democracy.

Actually, you can even word it like this - Americans and Mexicans are exactly the same. Geography and all.

Anyone who thinks Asian cultures are not unique and distinct from each other is pretty stupid. Imagine thinking that North Koreans are the same culturally than South Koreans. Or Chinese and Japanese. Or Thai and Indians. Might as well say, "they all look alike."

I don't see this as as big deal. It's not cheating. It's not a moral issue. It's seeing how fast a processor can crank under some artificial scenario.

This isn't like abusing steriods. Everyone should optimize for these benchmarks.

And reason Apple probably doesn't do it is that it doesn't matter to their sales, and historically they haven't sold on the same spec performance as android.

Last point, spec performance on a phone is like the special olympics. Intel is the real athlete in the game.
