That's a more than adequate sample size. It's actually pretty robust.
I don’t think so. I think it’s pretty crappy, not the outcome - the survey size - I don’t care whether it succeeds or not.
A US only survey of 5000. How bogus.

61% turned off the auto-renewal... just comes to show how crappy the service Apple offers actually is...

I think that's a ridiculous thing to say. Given how many millions surely signed up for the free trial, if almost 40% stick with it, that's an incredible number of people subscribing to a new service right off the bat. 40% is a huge success I think.

They released it too soon. Apple should've put another 3 months of work into it before releasing it so that people's first impression of it was favorable rather than experiencing it as a bug filled beta that leaves a long term negative impression.

I think you're giving Apple too much credit. Apple is historically known for releasing half-way implemented stuff like this for the first version. Giving them another 3 month or a year won't change anything.

We're not talking about cosmetic bugs, we're talking about fundamental and obvious issues that they should've known from the first day and they still released it.

They know perfectly well what they were doing. They just wanted to release the first version as is and ship several updates over time to patch things up and so on.

It's sad, they used to care about this stuff but they don't apparently. Just look at Mail.app issues, the crippled iWork release, some of their Pro apps that were dumped down, iPhotos wasn't that great on first day but it got better through updates.

This is what happens when you task a graphic designer to craft user interfaces instead of, I don't know, an actual human interface designer. I like what Apple Music stands for but it's chaos and confusion. This Alan Dye needs to go.

It looks broken and is expensive.

I'll look into Spotify's student discount program. Overall, Spotify looks more compelling honestly.
It's expensive? Who has better price? I'm not a student so Spotify's student discount means nothing to me.

Can't tell if those figures are good or bad. The headline sounds bad, but if 64% of those using it subscribe, that would still be about 40% / 40 million of the 100m who had reportedly signed up for the trial.

Which would be what - about double Spotify's paying subscribers? And likely to have a big push again when iOS 9 comes out.

Still a long way to go - as much as anything the numbers might add up better for artist royalty payments if streaming music generally reaches a tipping point to the mainstream.

They are not going to be able to sample the entire population, no way can they do that without Apple actually giving them the customer data.

Note this is just pure statistics, that's a very good sample size for what they intended it to be. Unfortunately, one thing you must keep in mind that statistics is just a well-educated guess or a lie depending on who you talk to. This is not to be taken as a pure fact, just a generalized guess based on the numbers they got.

You need to take - or retake - basic statistics and gain a better understanding of what's being done here.

What you think isn't really relevant to what the sample size needs to be to be predictive.

Haven't used it yet since I'm an Android user and there is no app yet and no web access. Sounds like I'm not missing much except a buggy mess. I was hoping the interface would be the same as and work with itunes sounds like that's not the case?

Does it have the ability to use smartlist? Larger Library and using the itunes interface might have swayed me since one of my pet peeves with other services like spotify and google play music is I can't create smartlists that auto update my playlists. ei songs newer than 2013 rated 3 stars or higher. Great way to organize and keep music synced to a device with limited space.

Just so disappointed Apple. Beats acquisition seems like a big waste of money as well.

Price of one new album to buy - $10

Price to subscribe to AM and be able to listen to pretty much anything you want - $10.

Whatever else, its not expensive, except maybe to millennial kids who expect to get everything virtually for free from the internet.

Right--a story about a limited survey--nothing more. It will be some time before anyone really knows how successful AM is and how many remain with auto renew. AM is fine for me and I'm sure it is for a lot of people.

64% of apple music users are extremely likely to pay after free trial. However 61% already turned off auto renew. These numbers don't make sense!!!

Turning off auto-renew does not mean that you have decided for certain what you will do. It's just means you've taken a step to ensure you won't give away money inadvertently in case you forget to decide.

I have auto-renew off, and will very likely stay with AM.

Hope this helps.

I tried it for a couple of weeks and wasn't overly impressed with it. I immediately turned off the auto-renewal just in case I didn't care for it and forgot to do so by the end of the trial. After the initial couple of weeks, I went back to Spotify and have been there since.
I'm using it right now because it has music Spotify doesn't (namely the Beatles) and I can sync playlists to my watch. Not sure if that will work with Spotify this fall.

Talk about Beats 1 radio. At 64 years old the music is too far from my taste! Where are Beats 2, 3 and so on. I need a classic rock station with live human curation. Also UK folk-rock a la Fairport Convention.

Come on guys!

I agree with this. LOL, i'm 35 and like to listen to the oldies from the 50's & 60's. There are iTunes radio stations that you can listen to the oldies, etc. It doesn't have DJ's at all but you can skip songs.

I thought Apple has already press released they have about 11m subscribers.

A sample of 5000 would, if representative, provide an incredibly accurate estimate.

The majority of academic research is done with far smaller samples.

In theory, 30 is enough for an accurate estimate for any normally distributed group.

See central limit theorem.
