in my experience this has less to do with the screen size and more to do with the price or people that just dont care about technology and just want an iPhone so they will keep it til it falls apart

No it is not the same price as before, here in Europe prices for new iPhones have gone up considerably.
Doesn't that have more to do with currency fluctuation?

Apple's prices on their US website have been the same for as long as I can remember: $650 and up for the current model.

That might be the case but doesn't matter to what I said earlier, new iPhones (6S-6S Plus) are just too expensive in Europe.
What did the iPhone 5S cost in Europe in 2013... and what does an iPhone 6S cost in Europe today?

I'm not sure what is going on with currency exchange in other countries... but Apple, themselves, did not change the price.

The iPhone 5S was $650 when new... and the new 6S is $650 today.

Are you suggesting that Apple is deliberately screwing Europe?

Not sure what we can read into this. For some people if their phone is good enough they may not see a need to upgrade. I'm highly skeptical 1/3 if the iPhone install base hasn't upgraded because the screen sizes are too big. Some yes. But not 1/3.

Yes.

A lot of people with a 5S are still in the 2-year [and contract] period if they bought a 5S mid-cycle and those just coming out will be looking forward the the 7, rather than theoretically buying an 18-month old design.

So it could be as simple as that also.

They don't need a 4" phone. What they need is smaller bezels. My 5.2" droid turbo is the same size as my wifes 4.7" iPhone 6. Apple could get a 4.7" screen in the size of the iPhone 5s if they wanted to.

I think Apple has a big surprise coming here. A lot of people I know would love the design aesthetic of the 5 series body (more square, less rounded edges) with the curved glass from the 6 series and maybe smaller bezels, and yes thinner. So what if the new 4-inch phone is the 7 design? I think this phone will be super sleek and small-phone people will scoop it up, while 6-series fans can start getting excited seeing what their 7 will look like!

I've become better at using my iPhone 6 one handed having it for a year plus now. But every time I pick up my old iPhone 5s I'm reminded how much more proficient I was at using that screen size. So if Apple releases a 4" model with similar specs as current top of the line I'd go back. But if they just re-package iPhone 6 internals I'd pass. I don't want 18 month old tech and the same tech I already have.

Just another comment about people saying they can use the bigger phones just fine one handed. Have a friend who has a 6 plus and kept saying that. So I asked him to show me. He goes and holds it in one hand and types with the other... I was laughing pretty hard at that one as he totally didn't get that one handed meant doing everything with just the one hand - not just able to hold it with one hand.

I still have my iPhone 5s, but not by choice. I should be using the 6s Plus by now.
I bet all those users are like that. Apple is GOING DOWN: Nobody *wants a 4 inch phone. Especially I know for a fact that there are LARGER phones that are going to be cheaper than this. Lets guess the price! $300????????? ****.THAT.****.

Not even my technologically retarded Dad wanted a 4 inch phone when he first saw my 6s.

The iPhone is used by a wide variety of ages... I suspect that the older crowd, the ones who may not feel compelled to upgrade as often, are using the older phones with the smaller screens.
A lot of people are using hand-me-down iPhones, and there aren't that many people (yet) handing down the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6+. These aren't likely to upgrade from their used 5S to a new 5SE. They'll wait until someone in their circle upgrades to the iPhone 7 or 7+, and they'll get the used iPhone 6 or 6+ as their "new" phone.

I also suspect there is a lot of overlap between the groups.

As I said, new iPhones are more expensive now than before (2013 or whatever), and yes I said I agree with you that it might have to do with currency fluctuations, the fact remains that new iPhones are just too expensive.
Is that Apple screwing us, might be, Apple is raising the prices, not our governments.

They don't need a 4" phone. What they need is smaller bezels. My 5.2" droid turbo is the same size as my wifes 4.7" iPhone 6. Apple could get a 4.7" screen in the size of the iPhone 5s if they wanted to.
Bezels are Apple's biggest issue in regards to size. I remember getting my 2014 Moto X last February and comparing it to the size of my iPhone 6. The 5.2" Moto X fits in an almost identical footprint as the 4.7" iPhone, yet has .5" of extra display real estate. Same could be said for the Nexus 6 vs the 6 Plus. There is a .5" larger screen on the Nexus, yet it still fits in nearly the exact same footprint as the 6 Plus.

Slim those bezels down and the iPhone will get a lot better with regards to overall size.

After I upgraded to the 6S Plus, I looked back at the iPhone 5 and wondered how I managed to use the phone for 3 years.
I guess we get used to what we have after a while.

They need to forget about 4" screens and go larger, 2/3 of people have a screen larger than 4", bigger is better

Have a 6, am debating going back to a 5s sized phone. My iPhone is turning back into a phone, so I'm not sure the screen size matters as much. All I really want is connectivity.

Interestingly, I think it's the other way around.

That it's the younger crowd (especially teen girls) that's keeping the small size, because it's cheaper, it fits in their jeans, and goes with their often one-handed usage.

Whereas the older crowd likes the bigger screens because of our eyes. Plus we usually have the coat and shirt pockets to store bigger devices :)

The only thing that disappoints me about the 4" iPhone SE is that it kills any chance of Apple reducing the bezels on the iPhone 7. The height is the dimension that bothers me the most with smartphones, and IMO it makes it very difficult to carry in pant pockets. Also, a 4.7" screen fits inside an iPhone 4, so the size of the screen isn't the problem.

Maybe the price is a reason lots of people still use 4" iPhones, Apple's iPhone 6(s)-(Plus) are just too expensive, I certainly will not buy a 6-6S nor a Plus even though I can easily afford them.
I agree. With 2-year contracts quickly coming to an end, I don't foresee myself getting the iPhone 7. Currently on a 6.

Still on my iPhone 5 which does everything I need it to do. Was never a "latest and greatest"-kind of guy. I don't really like the design of the iPhone 6 either. The size actually doesn't really matter this much to me. I think it's a good size and I almost always use it with one hand, but the 4.7" of the iPhone 6 honestly doesn't feel that much different. Most people probably just still use their old phones because there's simply not much game changing stuff that has been added.
