I love my 6+ but I'm not at all against the smaller sizes.
Bring on a new 4" shiny!

That is refreshing! A macrumors commenter that doesn't assume his use case is the only one! ;-)

I'm a 4.7" man myself... (Yes, I'm full aware of the fun people will make with this affirmation! I have a dirty mind after all, makes the world so fun!)

Another reason why 4" iPhone are still widely used is due to the fact they still have a pretty good performance on iOS 9, mostly on 64-bit iPhone 5s. I speak for myself as I still have my 5s. I still don't feel the need to migrate to 6s yet. Everything's still working marvellously.

Let's see how the 6s compares to my 5s
  • 3D Touch: don't care
  • Apple Pay: don't care
  • Live Photos: don't have a clue what that is, and thus don't care
  • Battery life: no better in the 6s
  • Screen size: would like it, but I have a nice battery case on my 5s and don't feel like buying another one for the 6s
Apple hasn't given me a compelling reason to upgrade. From what I've seen of the iPhone 7 rumors and the elimination of the headphone jack, they are actually doing the opposite.

Not sure what we can read into this. For some people if their phone is good enough they may not see a need to upgrade. I'm highly skeptical 1/3 if the iPhone install base hasn't upgraded because the screen sizes are too big. Some yes. But not 1/3.

Many simply didn't upgrade because their current phones fulfill their current needs, and they're not made of money... Seeing as it's been 2.4 years they've been selling the 5s/5c and and some are still buying them. Many people don;t upgrade their phone every year or every 2 years.

I agree. With 2-year contracts quickly coming to an end, I don't foresee myself getting the iPhone 7. Currently on a 6.
And I thought people hated contracts??? Wasn't there great fanfare when T-Mobile dropped contracts and became the "Uncarrier" ?

Here's the deal... on-contract you paid $199 down and the other $450 was hidden inside your monthly phone bill. You were paying the full price of the iPhone all along... you just didn't realize it.

Today... you don't have to pay anything down at the time of purchase... and you simply pay $650/24 each month.

And the service portion of your bill will be lower since they're not hiding the misnamed "subsidy" in there anymore. Now you actually see how much of your bill is for service and how much is for the phone itself.

The point is... you'll be paying the same amount of money... just in a different way.

So if you think the loss of contracts means you'll never be able to afford an iPhone ever again... that is some strange thinking! :)

If you could afford an iPhone the old way... you can afford one the new way too.

I'm happy that Apple is coming out with an upgraded 4" phone. While I've gotten used to and am happy with my 6s, I initially turned down an iPhone 6 and stuck with my 5s because I liked the smaller screen. I have extremely tiny hands so the 4.7 inch screen is a little awkward for me to use. The only reason I upgraded was because I ran out of space on my 5s, which made the phone almost unusable. Now that I've gotten used to the bigger screen I enjoy the extra space, but I would consider going back to a 4 inch screen for my next phone because it fits my hands better. If Apple does make a 4 inch iPhone it will be the only high end phone with that screen size. All of Android's high end phones are massive.

Apple Pay, 128GB, twice the RAM, and of course better Touch ID, better cameras, faster LTE, better battery, and so on. I also wish there still was a 3"5 or 4" option but I won't deny that this year's model can do a lot more than that of a few years ago.

You are listing tech specs. I am aware of those. What can I do with it that I can't now??

My iPhone is something that I use every day, without fail. I use it for leisure, I use it for work. My laptop has become a niche device thanks to my phone. I'm going to assume that your use case doesn't stray far from mine. That's not worth $950 to you? It's a no-brainer for me.

I use mine as well every day. For seconds each time. Still mine does everything. Ymmv

I am still on the 5s. Other than other the 128GB capacity, there is really nothing about the 6/6s that makes me want to upgrade and I prefer the 4" size. I will probably get the next iPhone and move up to a larger screen unfortunately. I doubt they will go back to 4" for a new feature model.

Anecdotal evidence doesn't mean much, but I know several people who still have an iPhone 4/4S or an iPhone 5S/C because the "iPhone 6 is too big." I certainly think there's a market for 4" devices, but Apple knows more than me.

Some people on this forum says that 4" is too big and want a 3.5" phone. I never felt the jump from 4S -> 5 was that massive.

I think it just comes down to how people use their iPhone. For the people whose 90% of iPhone usage is phone + messaging, the 4" size is the best. Those that do a lot more browsing, media consumption (books, videos) and gaming prefer a larger phone.

I personally would not want anything smaller or bigger than the 6s. The + is too big and the older 5s is too small, but that is why we have a choice. I hope for the smaller phone users the experience isn't hobbled in the same way smaller Android phones when this smaller format appears.I still suspect the 4.7" will be the better seller.

Currently on a 4s and I'm excited! What will I do with the extra screen space? /s
(Mostly I'm just excited for a new phone that fits in my pocket)

I still have my 5S. I usually keep my phones for 3 years so I should be upgrading sometime this year

Just thought I'd let you know:
The reason your home button doesn't have a square in it anymore is because it has a fingerprint reader... ergo, you DO have Apple Pay.

Had a chance to upgrade my 5s last September but opted to keep the only one and as a benefit moved onto a cheaper cell plan with much more data than if I'd upgraded for a bigger screen.

I'd still be using my 4s if the parents of the low life who stole it had used a condom... 3.5" was spot on for me.

i just got my 5s last year, so i'm going to stick with it for a while. but i'm hoping to get another 4" iphone, because it's just the perfect size for my trouser pockets and for onehanded use. i got big enough hands to thumb-type on an ipad air in landscape mode - still, it feels more comfortable to me to use a 4" screen one-handed than a 4.7" one. if i want to read something, i got my ipad air 2 with me 95% of the time - it's small enough to fit in my man-purse and even in some coat-pockets.

it's funny, how technology changes - i can remember a time when everybody was amazed by the small size of an ericsson t-28 - now everybody wants a phone triple the size but half the battery time.

Wrong.

The 5S does not have NFC.

but you can get apple pay working with a 5s, if you buy an apple watch for the nfc-functionality. still, apple pay is not that big of a deal anyway - it only works in 3 countries out of 130+ - and even there it's not universally accepted.

True... but that Ericsson only did phone calls and SMS. When phones were basically a speaker and a microphone... you could make them small.

Now the big glorious LCD screen is what people look for in smartphones since they interact with that screen to do more than just voice and text. It's freakin' computer in your pocket!

Would people use this? :D

The latest data from Mixpanel shows that approximately 32.22% of active iPhone users still have a 4-inch screen. That is the same screen size as the so-called "iPhone 5se" that Apple is expected to announce at its rumored March 15 event.

Apple has released three iPhone models with 4-inch screens since 2013, including the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5s, and some customers still feel these smartphones have the best screen size for pocketability and one-handed usage.

iPhone-4-inch.jpg

Apple's newest 4-inch smartphone, the iPhone 5s, represented just under 20 percent of current iPhones in use, trailed by the iPhone 5 at 7.53 percent and the plastic-backed iPhone 5c at 5.66 percent. The numbers fluctuate slightly in real time.

In the company's latest earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that 60 percent of older-generation iPhone users have yet to upgrade to the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, or iPhone 6s Plus.

Right now, customers that want a 4-inch iPhone have to settle for the over two-year-old iPhone 5s's outdated tech specs, and the smartphone also lacks many new features such as Apple Pay, 3D Touch, and Live Photos.

For that reason, the "iPhone 5se" with a rumored 4-inch screen, Apple's newest A9 chip, Live Photos, and purported price of around $500 may prove to be a more popular option among prospective iPhone buyers.

[doublepost=1454626260][/doublepost]I'm not a fan of larger size iPhone's. I like my 5S. If Apple keeps making the phones larger, may as well walk around with an iPad to your ear. Keep smaller iPhone's as an option so at least they are still with all the new updated electronics inside….
