Nearly One-Third of iPhone Users Still Have 4-Inch Screens

Just thought I'd let you know:
The reason your home button doesn't have a square in it anymore is because it has a fingerprint reader... ergo, you DO have Apple Pay.

He said he has a 5s. So no he does NOT have Apple Pay. The 5s lacks the NFC chip to make it work.

I've been saying this forever! I still know a lot of people who are holding out for another 4" model because they refuse to get a big iPhone. Especially women. Apple was foolish to completely disregard this large market segment for this long. Just charge the same as the 4.7" model—that's what they did before! Although that might undermine the Plus pricing. Just figure it out because you need to increase those iPhone sales numbers.

Speaking of which, this makes me wonder if they knew they could release this size now and beat their new "forecast" estimate of lower iPhone sales next quarter, which could help bring their stock back up. I mean, I've heard crazier conspiracies, haha.

That's big fat lie! I'm certain there are more iPhone 4/4S in the wild than any other iPhones, and the reason why most people don't want get rid of it is because of the design..not because of the screen size, however it's pretty nice to watch xxx on Safari while eating a hot dog on the same time

It's like Apple thought they could just force people to use a size they don't want. A big problem is that they completely f-ed their stance that the 4 and 5 sizes are ergonomically the best for one-handed use by excluding it from the 6 series. It made their intentions very transparent – the 6 and 6+ were so obviously dictated by market pressures instead of what was the best product. And if the rumors are true that the 4" size is going to sit at the technology kids table, I certainly won't be buying one. It's adding insult to injury to not put it on parity with the features of the larger iPhones.

The iPhone has had the same price for many years. The current model starts at $650... or $199 down on a contract.

If someone is still in love with their 4" iPhone 5S... it once cost the same as an iPhone 6S today, remember?

So I'm not seeing how iPhones are "too expensive"

This might be true inside the US but the dollar is much stronger today, so where I live the 16GB 6/6s got released at the same price as the 32GB 5/5s it replaced.. The entry is now about $120 more than before and the reasonable storage option, 64GB, is around $1050 with VAT from Apple.. For $1050 most people want more than just a spec bump. The 6s might be worth $1050 if you have no phone at all, but it's a harder sell if you already have a functioning iPhone in your hand..

I don't know who's doing the math here, but just looking at the figures without pulling out a calculator, the total is clearly over 37% of phones from the 5s back, which is MORE than a third...

Read the headline one more time ;)
(The oldest models don't have a 4" screen)

ok, then moving on up to the 5se should be no problem for these users. the only thing holding them back would be price.

I had an 6s and handed it back, too slippery and the new features didn't seem so useful that the extra size and weight, plus case, was worth it.
The 5s is just so much easier to hold and doesn't seem as glitchy as the 6s.

That's big fat lie! I'm certain there are more iPhone 4/4S in the wild than any other iPhones...

Not according to their data.

The iPhone 4 and 4S were introduced in Fall 2010 and 2011 respectively... so they would have sold the most units throughout 2011 and 2012. And even though they each remained on the market as a lower cost option for a few years after... they didn't sell nearly the quantities as they did in 2011-2012.

The later iPhone 5 and 5S quickly became the top sellers in subsequent years... as they were the current models. And overall iPhone sales increased as well. Then there was huge sales growth after the iPhone 6 too. Massive growth, actually.

So I'm not seeing any possible way that there are more iPhone 4 and 4S in the wild today. The numbers don't support that.

Apple simply didn't sell as many iPhone 4 and 4S as they did the iPhone 5 and beyond.

Would you care to explain why you believe otherwise?

They should release a smaller new iPhone .
It should have the same sized unibody as the iPhone 5(please give us back graphite/stealth black!). But at the front there is so much bezel and chin, it looks dated.
To solve this, they should give it a 4.2 inch 1334x750 screen. It should fit.

Together with an a9, nfc/Apple Pay , updated iPhone 6 camera, live photo's, 2gb and updated wifi /cellular, It would be a killer.
They should price it $25 higher than the current 5s price.
And keep the 5s with a $75 discount as a budget option and for emerging markets.

Just a dream, Apple will never do that.
But I would definitely be interested in a high end 4.2 inch iPhone.
But I guess it will have better specs than the iPhone 6s(higher dpi ) , so they will never do this.

Not a surprising trend. I only have a 6 because of a change in telecomm providers. Switched to a telecom company that saved a lot of money over our old setup for a total internet/phone/voip/cable tv pacakage. they threw in a 6 phone upgrade cheap enough the savings of the switch covered the phone upgrade easily in a few months really. part of the bait to lure us away, bait would be removed later...well lets take the bait now then. No deal/discount I'd still be using a 5 tbh.

Beyond that my take, and seems like others, is if we wanted bigger screens we'd buy them. But we don't....

My joke is if I wanted a larger screen I'd 4g my ipad mini and use the calling abilities given by apps like Line. I need my bigger screen its what my mini 4 is for really. need to go big...well then lets go big properly. Not needing the mini I just carry my phone. Smaller screen size fine. I don't need my honey do lists from the wife to be larger. I'd prefer in fact to not see it at all lol.

Process I had since the 5 really. Good things can come in smaller packages as the saying goes. If people like their big screen phones, well that's cool too. We all have likes and dislikes.

3.5" is where Apple should go if they want to release a smaller device. This is the size of the iPhone 4s.

Anyone that wants a smaller screen obviously doesn't care about viewing video on their phone. They would own the 6/6s or 6+/6S+ instead. Wide screen video was really the big selling pt when Apple moved to the 4" screen from the 3.5" screen in the first place.

The 4" screen still forces most to stretch or adjust their grip a bit in order to reach the top left corner with their thumb.

The 3.5" is the sweet spot for one-handed reach. It feels great. Your photos aren't any smaller than on a 4" screen either. Your internet pages, emails and messages etc are the same width in portrait mode on a 3.5" screen as on a 4" screen.

The 4" was always Apple's answer for those who wanted a bigger 3.5" phone. But now they truly offer bigger iPhones. They don't need a 4". They need to bring back the 3.5".

One third still have 4" screens because not every iPhone owner bought a 6 or 6S. I'll bet that all of those people wouldn't have upgraded if there was a 4" 6 or 6S. I know it's hard to believe, but the entire world doesn't upgrade with each new iPhone.

Some of those people who upgraded to the 6 or 6S might have instead upgraded to an up to date 4" iPhone if one had been available.

And I thought people hated contracts??? Wasn't there great fanfare when T-Mobile dropped contracts and became the "Uncarrier" ?

Here's the deal... on-contract you paid $199 down and the other $450 was hidden inside your monthly phone bill. You were paying the full price of the iPhone all along... you just didn't realize it.

Today... you don't have to pay anything down at the time of purchase... and you simply pay $650/24 each month.

And the service portion of your bill will be lower since they're not hiding the misnamed "subsidy" in there anymore. Now you actually see how much of your bill is for service and how much is for the phone itself.

The point is... you'll be paying the same amount of money... just in a different way.

So if you think the loss of contracts means you'll never be able to afford an iPhone ever again... that is some strange thinking! :)

If you could afford an iPhone the old way... you can afford one the new way too.
The difference is under the old contracts you had to pay for a new phone whether you wanted it or not. Now you can save money by not upgrading so lots of people who would have upgraded for $200 have decided they'd rather have the $450 in their pockets.

Apple Pay, 128GB, twice the RAM, and of course better Touch ID, better cameras, faster LTE, better battery, and so on. I also wish there still was a 3"5 or 4" option but I won't deny that this year's model can do a lot more than that of a few years ago.

Yes, but "Twice the RAM" is actually a problem, because it leads developers to get lazy and stop optimizing their apps for older phones with less memory. The apps still run, thanks to Apple's great design of iOS, but many apps are unnecessarily slow. Exact same functionality works great a few years ago and now is slow... yah, something has changed, and it's not the phone. It's the apps.

I'm sceptical of the figures regarding number of active iOS devices and the potential market for them.

Admittedly, I'm a flyer of a data point (6, 3x4s, 1x5s, iPad 2,3 and Air 2) but I know several normal folks that have both new and older iPhones.

I'm an active person and I do not want a large phone. I will keep my four inch iPhone until either Apple comes out with a comparably sized replacement or the phone fails and I seek out another brand. Apple purports to be catering to the active life style so I am eager to see if this traditional format comes to fruition.

5S here... haven't upgraded for two main reasons:

1) I don't upgrade my phones every year, or even every other year. I'm usually doing 3 to pushing 4 years for all my Apple devices.

2) While I love the design of the 6/6S (I actually hate the sharp edges of the 5er and even 4er designs), it's just too fricking big. Hell, even after almost 2.5 years I still feel the 5S is slightly too big for me, although it's mostly a combination of size and form (man I miss the 3GS, THAT was a comfortable to hold design). And while I may have small female hands, I actually do have quite long fingers...

But in no way would I get a 'new' phone with completely outdated specs. When I upgrade after 3 to 4 years, there is a reason for that and I do want an upgrade in technology...

Apple did neglect the 4" market because they were only focusing on Asia..and they LOVE big screens.

I want a phone-sized phone that I can use like a phone, i.e. with ONE hand and without an extra purse. For everything that needs a bigger screen, there are iPads...
