A new survey conducted by CNBC has found that 64 percent of Americans own an Apple product of some kind, a number that's increased from 50 percent in a similar survey published in 2012. The average American household owns 2.6 Apple products, which is "up by a full Apple product" from the previous survey. The All-America Economic Survey polled 800 people across the United States in late September, and CNBC said that the survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Apple device ownership rates dip below 50 percent in the 2017 survey for Americans with incomes under $30,000, retirees, and women over the age of 50. CNBC reported that the "wealthiest Americans" own 4.7 Apple products per household, while the "poorest" have one. Other statistics include 3.7 devices per household in the West of the United States, while households in the South owned 2.2 devices on average.
64 percent of those surveyed claimed that the time they spend on an iPhone is "mostly productive and useful," while 27 percent said that it's "mostly unproductive." On average, the time spent on an iPhone was "dominated" by phone calls, emails, and texting, followed by social media. Most Americans surveyed said that they were less likely to spend time watching videos, playing games, and shopping on their iPhone.
In a separate study conducted by Piper Jaffray earlier in 2017, it was found that 76 percent of teens polled owned an iPhone, increasing from 69 percent in the same period a year prior. 81 percent of teens also said that they plan to purchase an iPhone as their next smartphone, up from 75 percent in 2016. Piper Jaffray's survey polled 5,500 teens in the United States with the average age of 16.

Just more evidence that since that Tim Cook guy took over, Apple's been going down the tubes.

Truly remarkable for a company only 20 years removed from near collapse

And nearly two-thirds of those complain on messageboards about how Apple is doomed.

Like all cult themed technology, this too shall pass... just give it time. When you are at the top there is no place to go but down... luckily they have enough cash to ride out the wave for a long time without collapsing.

So Facebook and Instagram are considered "mostly productive" activities now.

I don't know about this, it sounds like it is skewed, the majority of the teens that I work with all have android phones because of the costs and their continual destruction and dropping of their phones. Nearly all the adults in my sphere use android phones as well. Very view have iPhones, and those that do don't know how to use it.

Unsurprising, since Apple makes a really wide range of at least decent products.

In my household, off the top of my head:
iMac, Retina MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPad Pro, iPhone 6S, iPhone SE, iPhone 3GS (Ret.), Apple TV, Mac Mini.

No, I'm not rich, and no I'm not paying payments, I just love Tech. Usually I just save up, and most of the time I don't have the latest version of each. My iPad Pro and Apple TV are probably the only 2 in the house bought within the last year or two.

No, just feels that way because people didn't to air grievances more than express satisfaction. It's the echo chamber effect.

But those 2/3rds who own have purchased products. Apple does need them to buy again to remain a growing company. The linked article doesn't say anything about whether or when those 2/3rds would or will buy an Apple product again. It also doesn't state if there is a max price where they would walk away from Apple's platforms. Those would be more forward looking indicators to whether Apple is doomed. We already know about Apple's past successes. This survey really isn't any new info.

This is pretty crazy. Apple has done a great job here. It is surprising that no company has caught up with Apple yet. Probably they are waiting for all Americans to own at least 3 Apple products.

Lol, well this is actually a REAL survey...
You notice they had numbers for the south, for the west, retirees, high & low income, etc.
Pardon us if we don’t think they should have instead only checked with “teens that work with @JosephAW & adults in his sphere”.
Your bubble apparently has very little to do with consumer behavior and trends.

That is funny. You are calling a scientifically conducted survey skewed and then using a 100% non-scientific anecdotal story to back up your theory. No, it doesn't work like that.

Extrapolating from a survey conduced with 800 people across the USA that 64 percent of Americans own an Apple product of some kind is wrong... Maybe it holds true for Gringos, but for Peruvians, Canadians, Chilean, ... it certainly does not.

America is North, Central and South America. It doesn't end with El Paso and Seattle!

Funny, I have six Apple products within one yard of where I'm sitting.

I shall therefore declare myself above average.

While I most certainly don't fall in the 'wealthiest Americans' category, between my wife and I we own 5 Apple products (two iPhones, iPod shuffle, Apple TV and a Macbook).
