annnnnnnnd.......going where? maybe i don't understand the relevance of the article...

It does not matter where he is going , the important news is that he is leaving .

He will remain an advisor and when he takes a new job, we will get another story.

As long as he doesn't end up at Apple....

Why? Apple needs people who can get new products out and less show pony executives.

Not so sure about that. We purchased several Nests for the home and I would not do that again. Over priced, buggy operation and difficult interface with a number of well known HVAC systems, a "learning function" that is really a pain in the ass. It is quite sleek looking, but the rotate and click UI has cool factor but, for me, awkward functionality.

So you do agree with me. It's going down the drain since it was purchased by Google :)

Tony Fadell, widely known as the "father" of the iPod and the creator of the Nest Learning Thermostat, today announced he is leaving Nest and Nest parent company Alphabet.

Fadell, Nest's founder, has been with Google since it acquired Nest for $3.2 billion in 2014 and has worked on projects like Google Glass in addition to continuing to run Nest Labs.

In a blog post, Fadell says he has decided the time is right to "leave the Nest," a decision that was originally made late last year. Fadell will not be present for day to day activities at Nest, but he plans to remain involved with the company as an advisor to Alphabet and Larry Page.Fadell says his new role as advisor will provide him with "time and flexibility" to pursue new opportunities and "create and disrupt other industries." He's leaving Nest with a two-year roadmap in place and Marwan Fawaz, a former Motorola executive, will be joining Nest as CEO.

According to Bloomberg, Fadell's departure follows some recent issues at Nest, including a long length of time between product releases and software issues with the Nest Protect smoke detector that led to a recall.Tony Fadell, in addition to being known for his work at Nest Labs, is credited as one of the original creators of the iPod, heading up the project as senior vice president of the iPod division from 2006 to 2008. Fadell started at Apple in 2001 and helped to produce early versions of Apple's iconic music player.

I don't know whose at fault but nest is the only smart home purchase that I have regretted. It is unstable, and incompatible with the other products that are quality. It has no HomeKit support, no Apple Watch app. Most importantly it goes offline constantly!

They need Nest for what exactly?

Ecobee and Honeywell have products that do the same, without the Google crap, and guess what, they are compatible with HomeKit!

Apple obviously knew what kind of guy Fadell was, that's why they didn't buy them...

When Nest was released it was the first of its kind. Ecobee and Honeywell smart thermostats didn't exist yet. They were innovative, like the iPhone. And obviously it had no HomeKit as that existed yet either. And no google crap, that's my whole point.

I guess they didn't want to bother with the compatibility issues. It's a difficult market to be in.

I see from your signature that you enjoyed the products the pony executives released.......
He would add nothing to the current Apple, and Steve knew that ;)

He shouldn't of sold his company to Google. Nest was doing well on its own. Now he lost his baby and has no direction. Is he going to make another company? - Doubtful.

I think he'll end up at some big corp like Microsoft or Tesla or something. Maybe even another stint at Apple.

The writing was on the wall with some of the rumors we heard about turmoil at Nest as well as Google hiring a VP for hardware and Google being the one to announce an Amazon Echo competitor. I don't think Beats was worth the $3B Apple paid for it and I certainly don't think Nest was worth that much either. It is amusing to look back at when Google acquired Nest and all the articles bemoaning the fact that Apple didn't.

I don't know about Nest, but Beats was a good buy. Beats hardware sales alone have already paid for sale.

Despite some criticism, Apple Music is also a good product with a growing subscriber base.

He is so wealthy he doesn't need to do anything. Perhaps that was the goal.

I really do not understand some of the hatred and mockery of Scott Forstall. I guess if you freeze frame an Apple product video you can capture anyone in a moment of being highly expressive. Those commenters engaging in the practice really mustn't be true Apple fans nor have appreciation for Apple history.

Scott Forstall was part of the team from NeXT that helped Apple survive its near death experience. The lead designer of Mac OSX's aqua user interface as well as leading the original software development team for the iPhone and iPad, Scott Forstall participated in giving Apple its distinctive advantage in the market. For a long time these software were much loved and highly regarded as the best in the industry.

Well said. Jobs kept him around for a reason. He was one of the people that saved Apple.

I also think he was made the fall guy for the faulty maps release.

The only mistake Apple made with the Maps release is it should have been labeled a beta. Google had gmail labeled a beta for like five years.

I have always believed he was given more credit than due on the iPod. I don't consider the nest thermostat a particularly groundbreaking product. But I'm happy to be disagreed with respectfully.
Take a look at every thermostat on the market prior to nest, along with Honeywell caught with their pants down for years. I would venture to say that nest changed the thermostat landscape entirely.

If you are inferring Steve forced him out, that would be wrong.

I was actually referring to Angela :p and the Beats boys.

Seems no one is adding anything to the current Apple to be honest .
Lol... They just a "fashion" ppl for my pov..... Apple needs some warriors or fighter, so hungry to fight for the next big thing.

This is good news. Nest had a groundbreaking product and Fadell failed to capitalize on it and design and produce a coherent ecosystem of home products. Anyone who has a security system at home knows how clunky and badly designed most of the components are, and most of them had Nest redesign written all over it. Nest had hardware with motion detectors (both Protect and Thermostat) and Dropcam for a while, so it should have taken them no time to produce a coherent and comprehensive security system solution that would tie into the existing Nest ecosystem and blow everything else on the market away. Instead, there is no such security solution on the horizon, they cannot even make a sealed Dropcam that you can install outside the house (despite constant pleas for that kind of solution on all the forums). It is a very large market that Nest missed ( and once people install cameras on their houses, they are not switching, becuase its much harder than changing a thermostat or smoke detector).

Fadell also failed to capitalize on Google's software might, preferring to do everything in-house, with predictable results. Add to this persistent rumors of arrogant behavior and difficult corporate culture at Nest, and you start understanding why this news has been long overdue.

There seems to be a pattern when Apple execs leave the company to do things on their own and infuse the "Apple" way into their new jobs, thinking the Job-sian philosophy would work.

It does'nt. And so they carry this kind of attitude from Apple to the new places.

He was worthless and this is great news for Nest. Perhaps now they will stop sucking and listen their customers. Dropped them for Ecobee last year which is a much better device.

Great story really.....it keeps the dream alive that anyone even without making any fundamental, lasting impact on the world can get stupidly rich because some other stupidly rich people buy their company from them. The only other place that this sort of ludicrous exchange of huge sums occurs is the art world.......

Jobs also made Cook CEO yet plenty of people here can't stand the guy and think he's no good for Apple.

Can I ask, what are your views on how TC is running apple ? Happy as a shareholder / fan?

Do you know the reason(or history) why Steve hired fadell in the first place? N why the iPod turns out is so great?

As a fan... TC fired or "let go" of several key exce on Apple, I think the only reason is their "style" is not fit to Tim cook's vision..... Like forstall, Mansfield, Johnson, the CFO.. And several ex-NeXT member; and hire or promote some guy can stand for TC vision, like the lady in fancy retail, the nerd in the Apple Watch, which is good for the company's stock and company image... But it's a bad blood for the company's future.

I think TC knows he is not a visionary, so he is trying to compensate by hiring high profile execs so that he is not seen as the face of Apple. He just wants to smile and wave. Problem is the culture is based around one strong leader. Tough change they are going through. Innovation has stagnated once a committee starts making decisions instead of the one crazy dude with a vison and spark.

That may be the (simplistic) view of Apple's culture from some on the outside, but I doubt very much if this view would make sense to anyone actually working for the company.
