Man if broadcast TV could figure out 4k, I think everyone would just give up the 13 a la carte services and switch back.
Broadcast TV knows how to broadcast at 4K, but they won't until the FCC makes them. Broadcast TV is just as sleazy as cable and streaming services, and they are one of the reasons that services which provide live broadcast TV cost so much, because broadcast TV demands a premium fee from cable and live TV streaming services to carry their crappy programming. Broadcast TV programming is mostly crap now a days, and it is still highly filtered as though we still live in the 1960s.

Those pro tips are indeed pro tips. I have 8TB attached to my Plex server. I also have 2 separate 8TB drives that are backups of the primary 8TB drive. Because you are correct, in the case of a problem that is a lot of re-ripping that will need to be done. (nearly 2000 full length films and over 4000 TV episodes)

All of my DVDs are in binders. I've ditched the cases for most except for collector edition cases and tins, or unusual packaging like my Caesar bust for the Planet of the Apes collection.

I'm curious about Emby and am going to give it a look.
Dude, you are indeed a "Subject Matter Expert" at this. Well done!

One thing I like about Emby, as compared to Plex, is that the file name of your movie, tv show, or whatever, is less restrictive. And you can tuck like-subjects into subfolders, and that appears like that in the Emby app. So for example, I have "A Star is Born" (the original and 2 remakes) all in the same sub-folder. I'm also going to do that with my 007 James Bond collection, because the titles of the movies sort all over the map and force me to scroll up and down when looking for the next one in the series to watch.

Another thing to like about Emby is that it has never "forgotten" my NAS media folder's name and location, but Plex would develop amnesia 3 or 4 times each year.

Oooh, sub-folder support could be a "killer" feature for me. I have multiple versions of some films, (7 of the original Dawn of the Dead, for example) and movie series (like Zatoichi) and having them all appear as a single entry in their respective genre categories would indeed be very handy.

Thanks for the tip on Emby. The only issue I've experienced with Plex is the intermittent need to log into their server at inopportune times but I'm always on the look-out for new and better.

A reason networks, cable, streaming services, etc. are able to charge what they charge is because enough consumers are willing to pay the prices.

I personally don't find the prices that outrageous when you consider, in the case of many cable plans, the number of channels included and the numbers of "free" on demand movies and shows that are available; or the amount of content available on streaming services when you consider what the cost of renting just one movie used to be; or what premium channels like HBO used to cost, etc.

In the end, the answer is pretty simple. If someone doesn't find a particular plan/service worth the price, they don't have to subscribe to it. There are many choices out there, including very inexpensive ones.

This seems to be a trend actually. Some other streaming TV services are set to go up the end of January too. My barber has gone up lol. Gas is up. All in the middle of a pandemic where people are strict with money. But what IS laughable is the 480p plan. That's just stupid and greedy Netflix. No plan on your tier should be limited to SD 480p content. Especially at $10 a month. No other streaming platform does BS like that.

The higher those prices are the more people will be going back to their pirate ships ?

As someone who comes from the era where you had to pay about $3 in rental fees per video tape and return it after 3 days, $20/month (about 7 tapes/movies) is still really good deal. I also remember cable tv costing like $100/m ($171 fixed for inflation!) . So yeah, $20 is not bad.

The problem, back when you paid $3 per tape you could watch any movie you want with $20/month you are limited to the Netflix library.

2$ more - no ads, no forced announcemnets of new content, watch what you want, 4k quality, no content for idiots like talkshow, reality shows etc….seems like easy win for me
To all who minus me…dont forget with premium you have 4 simultaneous screens…i pay 5$, do your math

Yeah, but Youtube can also be very dangerous, you have to be disciplined to not get sucked into funny kitties, boa snake vs crocodile, or slowmo guys videos, etc.
Don’t worry, I only watch politicians get DESTROYED, EVISCERATED, and DISMEMBERED with WORLD FACT BOOKS and LOGIC PUZZLES

You can't assume that people are drinking starbucks. Or buying expensive fashions or eating out all the time, for that matter. I make all of my coffee at home and eat out about once per week, if that. But even if I didn't, wouldn't that be my choice and not any of your business?
One makes it others business by complaining on forums. An extreme example. I have no monies to drive my Lamborghini because the price of gas. Might just get a few responses to that one.

Aand time to cancel my Netflix again. I don't subscribe every month anyway, I tend to just wait 4-5 months between subscriptions so there's something new to watch when I go back. Same with other subscriptions as well. But these prices are getting ridiculous considering how little actual quality content they have there.

Honestly T-Mobile pays most of my Netflix bill for me as a benefit of my plan. My total cost is currently $7 per month. The new pricing tier is only for new customers for now and I will have to evaluate the new cost once the new prices hit me. I don't imaging the increase will be too much.

LOL, like THAT ever happens! 🤭

Yep. I know a recording artist who taught music as a side-gig. He would make his students and their parents sign an agreement: No Television on Weeknights/School Nights.

That was before smartphones, so I'll bet today he has added to that requirement, but his point was that people would complain that they don't have time to practice their instrument, and kids would be really good at saying they don't have time to practice.

He would call BS on that and say that EVERYBODY has 15-30 minutes or more to practice their instrument weeknights, at least. Unless you're spending 3 hours watching television. Or, I would add, messing around with social media, playing online games, and more.

"Than". And yes, if you have a lot of individual services, that may be true. That's why I limit myself to Prime (free) and purchased media for my own use. Adding more and more services just provides more temptation for me to sit and vegetate.

That's how I left DirecTV.

Yep, that's great advice, "go enjoy something else for a few months". All this content will be here for you when you come back, even if it's 5 years later. Or 10.
It has happened below. Netflix just needs to wake up.

How do you do that? My internet alone is $90 🧐
Cox Internet Services gives me $50 off on my bill every month. It's some sort of a federal program. Not bad! Ayeee!

Netflix pushes soo much new high quality original content out lately, more than any of their competitors and more often than ever so this makes sense in some ways but the face that you can only get 4k on the highest tier is ridiculous. I could see if it was 8k but 4k is not a luxury anymore, its standard

Probably part of the reason going up. They have pricing deals with companies like TMO so Netflix trying to make back difference.

And their costly political plans.

Regarding paying movie stars...what movie stars and costly political plans are you speaking of?

Also, why would I care about what others want to do with the money they earn - whether it's a movie star, firefighter, or college professor, etc?

I suspect movie stars, like other employed people, are paid what their employers believe is appropriate.

No one wants to watch commercials. No one wants to watch TV content that is censored by the FCC. No one wants to pay for 1000 channels full of infomercials and pay-per-view garbage.

They are beginning to price themselves out of the market now..
Will have to see how this affects the U.K. prices, we only had an increase about 4 months ago!

Disney Plus won't put another raise through for a while and Amazon haven't had a raise in ages, yet they offer great content.

High quality original content? What are you referring to exactly? Most of the shows get whacked after two seasons so they don’t have to pay the actors more (this is documented) and I can’t think of any movie that went mainstream.

When’s the last time you were bragging about an awesome show, someone asked where they could watch it, and you said Netflix? Years…
