You have commercials on Netflix!? What backwards country do you come from
If you read the comment I replied to, you would see that the reason I stay away from cable is the commercials, not the cost. Nothing about Netflix having commercials.

So many streamers still don't even off 4K at all (Looking at you Hulu) or very limited. HBO Max is awful with that... and things dont stay in 4K. When Tennant was in theaters and on HBO max it was 4K, now it's just in HD.

The majority of people don't own 4K TV's, so I see the logic in branching it out (even though I'm stuck paying more). Since the orange man's administration killed net neutrality, companies have to pay a lot more money to operators for 4K streams so Netflix's cost for delivering 4K is higher. This is why YouTube TV charges an add on for 4K content because their cost to deliver to the end user is higher. Close to double.
Hulu actually offers 4K, at least for their original contents like The Handmaid's Tale which is also in Dolby Vision. But yes, the selection is very limited when compared to Netflix.

As for your second argument, I disagree. TV manufacturers have stopped making HDTV many years ago. Yes, many people are still using their old TVs but that doesn't mean contents should be limited to 1080p. Netflix is emulating and adopting cable company's business model, raising money every 18 months and charging extra for things that should be complementary.

Yes, there are a variety of reasons why people may choose to still subscribe to cable or satellite TV. My point was simply that the 75 to 80 million U.S. households that do, which represents up to 2/3rds or so of all households in the U.S., is still a significant portion.
It's actually less than half US households but that number is declining rapidly. If it wasn't for sports packages locking customers into regional programming, the number would be a lot lower. Cable TV programming is a dying business and might not even exist 10 years from now.

Why innovate or move away from a business model that works? Capitalism and greed....

Then your internet company should give you 1 gig connection as complementary as well.

The problem is, what you consider as complementary (4K streaming), has higher server costs. I don't see anyone complaining about different iPhone models - 13, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max. Why shouldn't the features of Pro Max be complementary at base price?

Remember when streaming meant you could save money instead of an expensive DirecTV contract? Seems like a long time ago...
Didn’t think they were doing it as a favor to you did ya?

I made a Plex server. Has been fun. Works better than all of them put together. Currently around 4500 movies and 200 TV series.

The Netflix folks are getting greedy, eh? My wife and I are thinking about getting rid of all that streaming crap anyway. Too much wasted time on mediocre TV content. This just makes the decision easier...
People, read books, be creative, enjoy nature (as long as we still have it) and meet people (in person, if possible) you like. THESE are the real joys in life. Not numbing your brain with one-way media overload. Do something useful with your time.

Netflix is the best streaming provider out there period. I do hate the price hikes and will drop them if the price gets too crazy. Let's review the landscape:

1. Amazon Prime = Ultra low budget Sci-Fi channel. Absolute garbage.
2. Disney+ = Devoid of content unless you are big on Marvel and Star Wars.
3. Apple TV+ = Great content for Adults. Needs more content.
4. Netflix = King of streaming services with loads of content for all ages.
5. Hulu = Probably the second or third best option out there with Adult content.

Discuss.

I have to disagree with you about Amazon Prime. Admittedly, I do like sci-fi, but they also have a great rotation of top-quality films, often in 4K. All for a very reasonable monthly fee that I'm already paying for Amazon's delivery service anyway!

It's true that Netflix has enormous volumes of stuff but in my experience only the top 1% or so is great quality and interesting to me. There's an awful lot of garbage on there too. When I've subscribed in the past it feels like after a few months you've watched everything that's worth watching.

(I'd say where Netflix really is king, however, is the UX. Netflix has a great UI and great content discovery that Amazon can't match. Even navigating Apple TV feels a bit clunky in many ways compared to Netflix)

Sure, if you're a thief.

I think anybody who has used a computer over the last 25 years has used torrents at some point. I know I couldn’t have gotten through university without them as nobody could afford £10k a year for a software license lol. My wife uses Popcorn Time now for downloading films and that is approved in the App Store.

I think it is thanks to torrents that we have the likes of Netflix in existence and at a price that makes it cheap enough that people need not bother illegally downloading content.

This where HBO Max comes in and takes the crown. This is what your Netflix take should be in 2022;

Netflix = documentaries, lots of lost IP for blockbuster content, loads of content from outside North America, nobody has talked about watching anything on Netflix since the early 2000’s.

Once Disney, Peacock, Paramount, and HBO took their stuff back it was over for Netflix. Amazon Prime still isn’t great but at least they have the budget to rent bigger IP’s if needed. Netflix will be stuck with their originals for a long time which people will pirate since their studio probably won’t go after anyone or they’ll cancel after two seasons. While I’m not a huge Disney watcher it’s hardly void of content especially for kids.

Yea, no one has ever talked about any of these shows:

Squid Games
The Crown
Stanger Things
Fuller House
Cobra Kai (granted this started on YouTube Red)
Bridgerton
Emily in Paris
Lost in Space
Queen's Gambit

(And those are just from the last few years).

Why do people have to exaggerate? If you don't like the shows Netflix runs, fine, everyone has their personal opinion. But, Netflix stills has way more "cooler talk" shows than any other streaming service, other than maybe Disney+ (and their popular shows are Marvel and Star Wars.)

Less than half?? There aren't over 160 million U.S. households, more like 125 million.

Yes, the number of households with cable or satellite TV is declining (the pandemic even increased cord-cutting as more people than usual sought cheaper alternatives) but it's still a significant total number.

I've seen everything on your list except The Crown, Fuller House, and Bridgerton and can say that list right there blows away the competition easily. You didn't even put The Witcher, Paper Tigers or Project Power on there either!

How are you getting the Disney+, Hulu ad-free, ESPN+ bundle for just $7/month or $79/year? Disney+ alone is currently listed at $7.99/month or $79.99/year. The Disney+, Hulu ad-free, ESPN+ bundle is listed at $19.99/month.
It actually closer to $91 per year... used to be $8.69 per month for the bundle, dropped to $7.60 in October.
And yes, they Hulu is ad free. Doesn't show it here, but it is.
