I always remember asking my parents for Sky TV but they said it was too expensive… now we pay for Netflix, Prime, Disney, C4 add-free, and occasionally buy movies from iTunes! Plus Spotify lol

$20/mo is still cheap then again I’m not poor. Same people complaining are drinking $6 Starbucks on a daily basis I bet. How do you even afford Apple products?
That‘s a simplistic and obtuse way to look at it. It has nothing to do (in most cases I’ll assume) with can/can’t afford it proposition. It’s more a principle than anything else. I can afford it easily and I’m still not happy about it, might drop down a tier or drop it entirely.

Its about voting with your wallet and choosing which things you feel are worth the price. I’m sure no one on here isn’t going to strained because of a buck or 2 a month.

Still worth it to me. If I watch 3-4 movies and/or series a month, the value far exceeds the cost for me. Plus, Netflixx, for me, has the best content. Apple+ is still pretty cheap, Prime Video is free with the shopping account and Disney+ is cheaper but for me a lesser value. So I don't mind the fee for Netflix 4K.

In my experience, Netflix compresses far more aggressively than Apple TV+, Disney+, and HBO Max. The amount of visible compression artifact is actually pretty embarrassing.

At the very least, the Basic tier should get 720p and the Standard tier should get 1080p HDR/Dolby Vision. But I can't think of any other US-based streaming service that charges extra for higher quality streams.
They seem be the same as broadcast. SD (480P), HD (1080P SDR), 4K (2160P HDR). 720P is still HD.

Now none of these streamers are higher quality bit-rate like they use to because of the pandemic influx of millions of subscribers. It seem to be more prominent at first in UK/EU. Now it's here in the states.

As a comparison I see Apple TV + app content that is typically 6 - 17 Mbps bit rate, where as owned content played through iTunes Movies is 14 - 31 Mbps. But 100% agree the bit-rates should be elevated back a bit.

If this increase is bothersome... I understand in roughly half the world, it's freezing this time of year, with little sunlight... and that pesky pandemic going on. But, maybe a nice little exercise is to unplug a few services, maybe move the TV to a less accessible spot, and go enjoy something else for a few months.

Yep, this is a total rip off, so you need to spend $20/month for 4k, only for fools. Never did get the fascination with Netflix shows, I subscribe for 1 to 2 months per year and watch all the shows I find interesting. The vast majority are uninteresting to me.
Wow. I like Netflix. I l like their 4k. I like their Dolby Vision. I find enough good programming to make it worthwhile to keep them even with the price increase. But yet according to you, I'm a fool.

My wife and I were just commenting the other day how little we watch on Netflix anymore. This might be the push we need to discontinue our service.
Sadly my wife still watch Netflix, but it’s my fault, i brought it into our house, just like ClashOfClans. Meanwhile i don’t watch Netflix anymore, and I don’t play ClashOfClans anymore, but my wife and my kids still do. Heh

Okay here and there i watch a movie on Netflix, but I stopped watching series, it wastes too much of my life time.

Most series becomes endless crap, or gets cancelled anyway, i hate this.

Movies are starting to get on my nerves too, always the same crapy stories rewritten.
Trailer woohhh, movie boooo.

I should read more!

How do you spend the extra time? Have you taken on new hobbies or invest in yourself in other ways? I am asking because I have been thinking series taste so much time too. And they stall and get worse with each episode.

Fortunately I cannot think of anything "new" or upcoming that even remotely raises an eyebrow, let alone gets me to "tune in". I have 2 streaming services that are part of other bundles and Apple One may go to the wayside due to all the headaches private relay has created for me (eg, having to deal with the gods-awful service from id.me that suspended my account because of the "suspicious activity").

Netflix is garbage!

can't believe we're at $20 for 4k streaming or that theres an uphharge for 4k period

T-Mobile covers the basic $10.99/month. I just pay $7/month for HD. I guess it will be now $8/month. T-Mobile is also covering 1 year of Paramount+. I get 1 year free Apple TV+. I was thinking of adding Discover+. Still a lot cheaper the cable or satellite. I pay $55/month for 300Mbit internet.

I think most streaming services hope to have 1-3 blockbuster series.

For HBO, it was Game of Thrones. For Netflix, it was Squid Game. For Apple it's Ted Lasso.
They just need that one series to lure viewers in.

Given there's a hit on pretty much every service, it's too expensive to join them all.
Jumping from service to service is a bit too much hassle for me. I'll stick with one (Netflix) for now and just sign up with other services only whenever there's trial offer.
Showtime has WestWorld.

The only reason I can watch Netflix is it came with my T-Mobile plan.
I’m only using a 720p tv anyway using hdmi adaptor to my iPhone.
Their video quality seems jumpy and skips frames every now and then.
Disney+ doesn’t have any of these problems.

I would have dropped Netflix ages ago but my wife loves the foreign content. Personally im more a Disney+ fan. I don't like now Netflix hypes shows only to cancel them after one season, its like what's the point?

Yup, I mainly have Netflix for my family. I'm simply too busy to keep up with the countless series.
