See now if they had just offered 1080p on their basic plans, this wouldn't have been so bad, but they just had to screw you somewhere.

Oh Canada! t's 5.99$ Canadian dollars north of the US border, which is about 3$US these days, just (almost not) kidding, it's about 4.35$US at the current rate... Go Habs Go! :D

Still not a good deal, imho, the 720p limit is a no go.

I have a netflix account but use it infrequently. I might downgrade to basic. If I watched it all the time, I might spring for the extra $3, but if I have to watch ads the once or twice I watch something there a month...

720P in 2022. Haha. What a clown show of a company. I have Netflix for one reason and one reason only... It's free with T-Mobile.
Nothing is free. Didn't your parents teach you that? Magenta plans on TM are more expensive than earlier plans -- for the same service. The difference is the extra cost for Magenta includes "free" services, like Netflix. Free is really NOT FREE. I'll stick with my way cheaper TM Unlimited plan AND won't bother resubscribing to Netflix either.

😂 Who is on the fence over $3 per month? Exactly who would find it valuable to advertise to that demographic? Payday loan sharks? Maybe you'd get it for your kids, but Netflix isn't a kids channel.
If it's anything like Discovery+ and their "ad-lite" plan, it can be the same commercial 3 times in a row. Literally the same commercial played every commercial break, 3 times. Agonizing.

They are making money on advertising which is a reason why they are discounting the price of the plan. It doesn't mean they should discount it the full $9.99/month. A pay/ad hybrid mode has been the norm for ages whether it be newspapers, magazines or cable/satellite television.

Other streaming services charge for (or will be) ad-supported plans including Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Paramount+, etc. By offering an ad-supported plan, Netflix is doing what other streaming services have done and what Apple may be looking to do with TV+ next year.
So you say Netflix is doing what other streaming services are doing, but you defend them offering lame 720p in the lower cost packages when NO ONE ELSE does it? Make up your mind...

You’re going to pay only $3 less and subject yourself to ads? Who is this for?
Offhand, likely two customers: (1) people who talk themselves into getting it because it's so cheap and then talk themselves into upgrading to a more expensive tier after a while, and, (2) companies (like wireless carriers) who want to bundle it in as a "free" thing they're giving you.

I watch 480i shows all day long on MeTV in old fashioned square aspect ratio and Black and White. DVDs are SD and I’m okay with that too.
Broadcast television is 720p or 1080i.
I must ask how much content on “Live” streaming TV is in 4K?
I have no use for Netflix at any price.
I still use cable TV because it is the best for my needs. Nothing more.
The movies before about 1953 are 4:3 aspect ratio, in mono sound, and plenty are B&W.
I pay $10/month for Turner Classic Movies on my Xfinity plan.
If they don’t have it, I don’t need it. TCM is commercial free. Always has been.

Man, I remember back in 2011 when Netflix was taking off and a huge chunk of people just stopped pirating content because Netflix was cheap, convenient, had a great selection, and usually had higher quality than what people would find on free streaming or torrent sites.

11 years later, I wonder how much the constant shifting of content to separate streaming services, quality limitations, account-sharing crackdowns, and addition of ads is encouraging those people to dust off the ol' eyepatch and Jolly Roger.

What a miss for not being priced at 4.99/5.99.
Plus not having access to all shows "due to licensing restrictions" is a big no from me.

Congrats Netflix, you are irrelevant! 🎉

it's political season, imagine the amount of ads. I switched over to YouTube Premium because of the political ads were too much.

Netflix today announced the upcoming launch of the ad-supported tier that has been in the works for the last several months. The new "Basic With Ads" plan is priced at $6.99 per month in the United States, $3 cheaper than the standard Basic plan.

netflix-4.jpg

Basic With Ads will be available alongside the Basic, Standard, and Premium plans, offering 720p streaming video. Netflix is also updating the standard Basic plan with 720p support when the Basic With Ads plan launches.

Netflix's new plan will offer most of the same TV shows, movies, and "personalized viewing experience," but subscribers will see between four and five minutes of ads per hour. Ads will vary from 15 to 30 seconds in length, and will play before and during shows and films.

There will be a selection of movies and TV shows that will not be available due to licensing restrictions, but Netflix has not provided a list of content that will be inaccessible.

Unlike with the plans without ads, the ad-based tier will not support downloading movies and TV shows for offline viewing.

Netflix Basic with Ads is set to launch on Thursday, November 3 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time. It will be available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US.

Sounds good to me. I watch the FreeVee stuff with ads and there are less and shorter ads than OTA TV. Plus you has to make bathrooms runs and put popcorn in the mircowave so ads have a purpose.

WTF.
So for +3$/m you get : no ads, 1080p, offline viewing, all the content.

If 3$/m does make a difference in your wallet, please don’t pay Netflix and just torrent your stuff.

I pay $0. Cancelled that shovelware streamer last spring 😁
Yep! The only thing I miss is laughing at the cornball rip off “original” programming:

“Lion Tzar”

“Contest of King Chairs”

“The Revengers”

“Arachnid-Fella: No Way Back to the Domicile”

“Looking Around For and Subsequently Discovering Nemo.”

Ya know that kinda high brow garbo.

Stop and go months is the best option for me on Netflix. I don't watch it constantly.
Ah, but I remember the good ol' days when you would quit them, Netflix would offer you a free month to Please come back! I did that a lot of times.
I might do Netflix again soon, see what's currently cookin.....
just not sure if I wanna pay less and get ads tho...

By offering ad-supported plans, Netflix is doing what other streaming services are doing.

My comment in a different post was that a company offering choices including dated features in a product doesn’t necessarily make it a "clown show of a company."

There's nothing to "make up my mind" about as these statements don't conflict each other.

Hulu's ad-supported has more subscribers over its ad-free. Every other service offers an ad-tier now. This will be a big driver, so big, they did it because Disney (!) and HBO (!) had to do the same.
What resolution is the Hulu at supported plan? I don’t think it’s 720P

I'll trust the data they have over russell 314.
I’m not sure if that’s supposed to be an insult but why would you “trust” some random person on the internet you don’t even know 🤦‍♂️😂
