Apple is alienating more and more companies/services. They never really were good at cooperation. The end result is that their own customers will suffer.
It's exactly what Apple wants, they don't want you using anyone else's hardware or services, they want you locked in tight. Funnily enough thier customers seem to want the same thing as they defend Apple at every chance.

They could easily allow airplay for the regular subscribers and disallow it for those with mobile device subs only. That would not be difficult. I don't buy your guessplanation.

I understand your point, however if you are an Apple developer for iOS you will understand that unless you ship two separate Netflix apps this is not possible to achieve. You either included the AirPlay API or you don’t.

They are all just fighting to control a bigger piece of the pie. Well it's time they learned it is our pie! It's bad enough the ISPs have us by the short hairs but we don't have to pay extra for so-called service providers to have pissing matches with each other. And that's all this is - be it Apple, Netflix or whoever. Drop then all until they can behave!

As it sounds like you’ve been doing this for quite some time, which TVs have you been AirPlaying Netflix, or any other streaming TV service, directly into from your iPhone/iPad?
Yes, for over 5 years and of course the appletv3 doesn't update to a recent Netflix app. So its glitchy etc.
Primarily used the iPad mini to stream Youtube, Netflix and any other video content online to the appletv3, + 46" Sony LED Hdtv. Luckily everything else still works. . . . except Netflix. Have gone back to using the Netflix app on my Sony PS3. The interface is really decent now. This whole thing is annoying but not the end of the world. So . . .

The Netflix app for iPhone and iPad no longer appears to support AirPlay, based on an updated support document found on the Netflix website.

According to Netflix, AirPlay is no longer supported on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch due to "technical limitations." There are no details from Netflix on what those technical limitations might be.

Several MacRumors readers have attempted to use AirPlay with the Netflix app over the course of the last few days and have run into issues doing so from the Netflix app.

AirPlay can still be initiated using the Control Center on an iOS device, but when attempting to test the feature, we were unable to get Netflix content to play and received an error message.

It's not clear why AirPlay support has been removed from the Netflix app. The feature has been available since 2013 and it was working up until this week.

Netflix apps are available on the Apple TV, consoles, smart TVs, iOS devices, and more, so there's not a real need to use AirPlay to watch Netflix content, but there were instances where it was convenient to use.

Netflix has in recent months been making efforts to better protect its content. In December, Netflix stopped allowing customers to sign up for Netflix within the iOS app, and Netflix has never opted to participate in Apple's TV app, making it unavailable in the "Up Next" feature of Watch Now.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings recently confirmed that Netflix had no plans to be a part of Apple's TV plans and said that Netflix isn't interested in offering its content in alternate ways. "We want to have people watch our shows on our services," he said.

Update: A Netflix spokesperson provided further explanation on the company's decision to discontinue support for AirPlay on iOS devices, attributing it to the rollout of AirPlay support on third party devices and an inability to distinguish between them:

"We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on any device they use. With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn't a way for us to distinguish between devices (what is an Apple TV vs. what isn't) or certify these experiences. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices."

This is MUCH less about providing a unified customer experience, and EVERYTHING about not being able to tell which devices could be ripping content. Not everyone’s buying it.

This and the price increases leave Netflix on very thin ice in our house. May be time for them to go.

I personally don't believe their explanation, but we have several streaming devices and Netflix is on all of them, so this has zero impact at home. I usually can't watch a streaming service on a hotel TV anyway because most of the towns I am sent to are rural, old, and their technology rates from the early 2000's at the latest. I watch movies on my iPad that I preloaded before the trip.

I've seen multiple posts blame Apple, and these I don't really understand. Yes, Apple is trying to become a competitor to Netflix. So is Disney, CBS, Hulu, ESPN and probably every other content provider on the planet. I think they are all in for a nasty shock, in that people really can't afford all of them so only a few will get enough customers to be profitable. Right now I don't think- from the shows announced or released- that Apple will be one of them but I could be wrong. Netflix may not be one of them either, as the shows many liked are owned by other companies that are planning their own streaming service, so Netflix is going to lose them for both original content and for movies/tv shows. Disney is probably a safe bet, but they've screwed things up before so although I THINK they will succeed they might price themselves out of the market, or do some stupid tier service or limit how often you can change tiers or come up with some other way to kill the golden goose.

This week I tried chatting twice with NETFLIX customer support asking why there is now an increase of 2 USD in the monthly fee, when NETFLIX business is booming and they are making more money than ever before ... I asked for a direct e-mail address to file my written complaint or to be included as CC on their e-mail when customer srevice would forward my complaint/inquiry to NETFLIX's higher management ... NONE of this was unfortunately possible and they would/could only give me a postal address ... that's really LOUSY customer "service" and now add to this that NETFLIX no longer supports AirPlay because of "technical limitations" ... but I will send my complaint to NETFLIX management by FedEx and am courious to read their reply!?!

Lies. Apple Music works on Android, Sonos and Echo. AirPlay 2 is coming to TVs. All Google’s Apps/services are in The App Store even though many compete directly with Apple. There’s just a few for you.

Give back. my money Netflix!

Why would anyone use Airplay to watch Netflix? Not being snarky. Honestly curious. Seems weird.

Because we want to watch a movie as a family so we airplay from the phone or iPad to the tv.

Netflix truly doesn't give a damn whether you're a customer or not. In fact, they would rather you cancel than cause problems for them. They might even kick you off the service if you continue to cause trouble.

P.S. You will NOT get a reply from them.

First: supporting airplay takes NO effort from developers. They actually have to work to PREVENT it, but not to ENABLE it, so I have no idea what you are trying to say about Netflix being “forced to provide airplay.” The OS provides airplay. If Netflix does NOTHING they get full airplay support.

Second, why is it my job to repeat what has already been said a hundred times because you don’t want to RTFM? Fine. Here is a copy and paste from a post made only a few before yours:

1) I download a bunch of Netflix shows for my kid onto my add. Travel to europe. The hotel tv has Netflix. I don’t want to enter my credentials because I don’t trust that setup, but even if i did, because of geoblocking, i couldnt watch those shows in europe anyway. Which is why i downloaded them onto my iPad. I used airplay. (In Italy, fwiw.) It worked fine back then.

2) We had an internet outage at our house for two days. We used an iPad with LTE to airplay Netflix onto the family room TV set. Now that won’t work.

3) We have apple tv’s hooked up to the conference room monitors in all our offices. They are primarily for displaying PowerPoint. As part of a group social activity we airplayed Netflix on two occasions. Management doesnt want to install the Netflix app, nor does management have a Netflix account, so someone would have to enter personal credentials even if they did.

4) Smart TVs will now increasingly have the airplay functionality built in. So now there are two choices: when traveling someplace (to a hotel, a friend, a family member, whatever) I can enter my credentials into some strange TV, or I can airplay. The latter is like in the old days when you’d just plug your game console or portable player into the tv with rca cables. Nothing to log in, etc. Much easier.

5) Some people have pointed out that they have cabins, vacation homes, time shares, etc. without external internet access or with expensive internet access. A pre-loaded or unlimited LTE iOS device is great in those situations.
first I think is the other way around,
but anyway, what I meant was that Netflix doesn't have to provide air play support for their app if they "Netflix" don't want to, airplay is an apple iOS feature but let's say what you say is true, well what's wrong with blocking or not wanting to add or implement support to have compatibility with an iOS feature in their app

apple own iOS, but they don't own Netflix

look what apple been doing to Nvidia userso_O

second , thank you, you didn't had to, if you didn't want to but you were making references that require to read too may pages just to find out , what you were referring to
but thanks to pointing me to the right direction

any other 3rd party can supply screen mirroring to any other device if the person need to
but the problem is that people demand to be air play which is included natively in ios
so my point is exactly what I said before, there are work arounds but people simply don't want to pay
if Netflix is so bad and this decision is such obstacle then don't use Netflix
it is really that simple

maybe apple can provide a better service

regards

I hope you are joking. If not, are you complaining every time some company raises prices or just when Netflix does it? How many times did you complain to Apple about price increases?

If netflix don’t know if your devices is fullHD or 4K, has Dolby vision, support for Dolby Atmos then how do Netflix know what stream to send you?
If they just default to 480i and stereo on all AirPlay 2 devices to make sure everyone can play it, a lot of customers will be disappointed.
In the specification, the device reports what it is capable of, it also reports what the device is, so Netflix’s excuse of not knowing what the device is, is also crap.

The problem is more likely that they didn't realize AirPlay had been cracked until recently. AirPlay was cracked open years ago, but nobody really noticed until the iTunes-sourced 4k movies showed up on torrent sites.

As a software developer, I can see where it could be problematic not being able to tell what kind of device you are displaying content on. Without knowing the details of how their software works, it would be impossible to judge what kind of problems that would cause, or whether there was a workaround. Jury is out on this one.

On American Airlines you can stream Apple Music on the inflight WiFi for free, so I was told by the galaxy 9 owner sitting next to me.
