The problem is more likely that they didn't realize AirPlay had been cracked until recently. AirPlay was cracked open years ago, but nobody really noticed until the iTunes-sourced 4k movies showed up on torrent sites.
That wasn’t cracked via airplay. That was FairPlay cracked.

As a software developer, I can see where it could be problematic not being able to tell what kind of device you are displaying content on. Without knowing the details of how their software works, it would be impossible to judge what kind of problems that would cause, or whether there was a workaround. Jury is out on this one.
Weird. It worked fine for years and works fine for every other app.

The Netflix app for iPhone and iPad no longer appears to support AirPlay, based on an updated support document found on the Netflix website.

According to Netflix, AirPlay is no longer supported on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch due to "technical limitations." There are no details from Netflix on what those technical limitations might be.

Several MacRumors readers have attempted to use AirPlay with the Netflix app over the course of the last few days and have run into issues doing so from the Netflix app.

AirPlay can still be initiated using the Control Center on an iOS device, but when attempting to test the feature, we were unable to get Netflix content to play and received an error message.

It's not clear why AirPlay support has been removed from the Netflix app. The feature has been available since 2013 and it was working up until this week.

Netflix apps are available on the Apple TV, consoles, smart TVs, iOS devices, and more, so there's not a real need to use AirPlay to watch Netflix content, but there were instances where it was convenient to use.

Netflix has in recent months been making efforts to better protect its content. In December, Netflix stopped allowing customers to sign up for Netflix within the iOS app, and Netflix has never opted to participate in Apple's TV app, making it unavailable in the "Up Next" feature of Watch Now.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings recently confirmed that Netflix had no plans to be a part of Apple's TV plans and said that Netflix isn't interested in offering its content in alternate ways. "We want to have people watch our shows on our services," he said.

Update: A Netflix spokesperson provided further explanation on the company's decision to discontinue support for AirPlay on iOS devices, attributing it to the rollout of AirPlay support on third party devices and an inability to distinguish between them:

"We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on any device they use. With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn't a way for us to distinguish between devices (what is an Apple TV vs. what isn't) or certify these experiences. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices."

Never even knew you could airplay Netflix to a tv

No, FairPlay was never cracked. You can capture AirPlay streams using any of the various AirPlay receiver apps and transcode them to whatever = piracy.

Why just why sigh. Not trying to step on anyone’s toes, I was responding to someone in my reply “When all your friends are talking about Stranger Things, Black Mirror and Russian Doll, those without Netflix will feel left out.” I see that you threw in a few extra things like having a family of your own and assume that I do not because I did not put it out there. Do not assume without knowing all the facts...
My bad, I read it wrong. Sometimes context goes out the window when not talking face to face plus as I said it was a rough night so my apologies.

For which you need airplay.

SoyCapitanSoyCapitan's referring to when the iOS app connects directly to the Netflix app on TV/consoles(2nd Screen). Instead of streaming(like AirPlay and Chromecast), it controls the TV app and tells it what to play.

It has its pros and cons - you need to log in to the same account on the TV app for it to work, but you don't have to worry about spotty wi-fi if your TV is wired because the TV app itself is downloading from Netflix.

iOS YouTube works in the same way.

..They’ve gotten rid of so many movies, and now that they’re acting in such a petty way to smite Apple but also customers, I’m not sure how much longer I’ll remain one.

I have to agree. We started with Netflix back with the dvd-mail service around 2007 and it was FANTASTIC (and I hear it still is great). We switched to the streaming around 2013 for some reason and all I can say is that Netflix has such POOR selection in movies. Looking for any non-Netflix created movie from 2018 or 2017 yields about 5 movies I want to see. Seriously. We have kids so there are some great kids shows/movies but Netflix also just loves to remove/delete content without any notification. POOF! Not only is it gone from Netflix but they delete it from my Watch List. They could at least grey it out so I know I'm not crazy and then I could just go somewhere else to watch it.

Add to all this nonsense that the price keeps going up $1-$2 PER MONTH PER YEAR ($12.99 now for us) and I think it's time to cancel if we can find/watch most of the kids' stuff elsewhere on Appletv or actually use our outrageously-expensive cable tv package.

Not sure about ya talking. As in this aftenoon I had lunch at my Mothers and She ask'd me to set her iPhone7 and Chromecast2 for an old TV.set (She recently changed TV/Internet operator). I had to download the NetFlix App again on Her iPhone and the airplay feature worked just fine as before. What Changed?

yeah anyone who thinks apple is going to beat netflix in thhe streaming game should probably step away from the kool-aid.

“PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.”
“No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame.”
“I give them two years before they’re turning out the lights on a very painful and expensive mistake.”
“Apple is slated to come out with a new phone… And it will largely fail.”
“There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. It’s a $500 subsidized item.”

Here is the translation:
"We can't determine how many devices you are using at once with Apple due to their privacy scheme, so we can't determine if you are violating our policies and need an upgraded account or another account. In other words we might loose money if we allow this."

Why can’t they tell how many devices you are using at once? They know which device you are airplaying from, and that’s all that really matters.

Sure. Just like Apple wouldn’t succeed in making cell phones. Or that the iPad wouldn’t take off because Windows “slates” ran a real OS. Or that Apple processors wouldn’t compete with Samsung or Qualcomm. Or that Apple should concede music streaming to Spotify. Or that the Apple Watch would fail, mainly because it didn’t have a round face and look like a traditional watch. Or AirPods would fail because people don’t want to look like an idiot with something sticking out of their ears.

Aren’t people getting tired of betting against Apple?

Woof. This is a bad excuse
Regardless of the excuse, it is a very Apple like decision.
[doublepost=1554700404][/doublepost]
It's like they want me to cancel my subscription.
I'd guess that most Apple users like myself already have an Apple TV.
I can access netflix on my Fetch TV, Smart TV itself and on my Apple TV.
I still go back to the Fetch TV box over the other two.
Streaming netflix over airplay is a poor experience for families where you can't use the household remote.

Very petty of them. Bad for their customers.
It may turn out to be petty. But only bad for as Apple would put it, "only affects a small number of customers"
Don't know why you wouldn't just use the App on the Apple tv.
[doublepost=1554700651][/doublepost]
These anti consumer practices need to stop. Cancelling my subscription to protest this garbage move.
I keep on saying the same thing against Apple.

Why would anyone use Airplay to watch Netflix? Not being snarky. Honestly curious. Seems weird.
I think it is a case of Apple fans venting against anything negative that any company does towards Apple.
I'd guess almost no-one Airplays netflix to a TV when native Apps are available.

I cancelled my Netflix last year because the interface was getting worse and worse and it reached a point where I never actually watched anything in the app.

So I dunno what it's like these days, but I imagine the phone app is probably still a vastly superior experience to any of their TV apps. For example the barrage of auto-playing ads (trailers) while searching for something good to watch is annoying on any platform, but they're easier to pause on a touchscreen than a TV remote.

Airplay still had the TV directly download content over ethernet, so performance/etc is just as good as using the native app. There's no reason not to use Airplay.

That's a dumb way of looking at things. Samsung and Qualcomm make processors for every and any company under the sun (oh including making them for Apple) who does Apple make them for? (nobody), OK who do they design them for? (only Apple).

My point is Apple processors aren't competing with anyone because no-one (apart from Apple), given the choice, can actually use them.

I'm paying for 3 members on my account ... soon as Marvel movies goes (many have already; some on My List tagged remain), Suits and a few oddities and a better alternative in Canada at competitive rates I'm done!

This is some Blockbuster VHS movie rental garbage excuse after another!

I only have Netflix for Better Call Saul and Brooklyn 99. They’ve gotten rid of so many movies, and now that they’re acting in such a petty way to smite Apple but also customers, I’m not sure how much longer I’ll remain one.

Agreed!

Not sure why one would need this anyway.. if you have an apple tv to airplay to, you might as well use the netflix app on it.
If you have a tv with integrated airplay, it is new and definitely has netflix on it.

How about that 'choose your own adventure style' Broken Mirror episode? Would not work on AppleTV Netflix app or on iOS ... but via web on a Mac ... AirPlay would work ... Netflix is removing any potential work arounds to enjoy features such as this even from PAYING members.

They let you connect your device to their AppleTV via AirPlay, but won’t let you install an app that doesn’t require allowing access to a stranger’s device?
It's safe, when I am staying in a hotel, I don't want to install Netflix, enter username & password, what if I forget to remove app, username, password ?

I would consider alternatives to Netflix, if only there were some... Outside the US there's no real alternative to Netflix, and I think none is in sight, at least in the short term.

Apple TV App is useless without HBO, Hulu and the like. Apple itself will only release a little original content... I am curious about Disney+ although I don't get my hopes too high. Basically, I am stuck with Netflix (I will never, for the life of me, subscribe to cable again in my life) because these "mega corporation" still cannot grasp that the world is a bit bigger than "US only"....

I use the Apple TV2, and although it does have a Netflix app, I find the iOS app much easier to use.

This is still customer hostile behaviour, taking away options.

As customer hostile like removing the 3.5 headphone jack? With the lame excuse that they did it for an IP rating and more space in the iphone? A lot of hypocritical ******** from Apple fans in this topic....
