Ugh can’t they just release a Stranger Things blu ray so I don’t need to keep paying? I like to re-watch stuff often and Stranger Things has been my favorite show in the last few years.

If you have a kid at university for example you’d need to pay an additional fee for them to be able to assess Netflix Since they don’t have the same IP
This is the issue I have. My daughter uses our Netflix account while she's away at school.
We don't "need" Netflix that much, so I have no desire to pay additional for my kid to use our account.

I can understand cracking down on non-family member sharing, I mean they do require revenue to create new content.

Someone help me understand how this works, because my spouse travels for work. Will we get flagged because she happens to be out of state and tries to watch something?

No, that is not what is happening. I travel all the time and will watch on my iPad or my Mac while my AppleTVs sit at home. Traveling with your own devices is fine. What they are cracking down on is people that share their account with people that do not live in the account owners household. People that travel, kids at college, people on vacation, etc are just fine.

I believe their main criteria is "does your legal mailing address match the account owners". This of course covers kids at college. Your cousin that live 5 states away... not so much.

Edit: So I might be wrong about this. It appears that Netflix has updated their terms to define a household and devices used in that household. People who travel for work / vacation appear to be ok but this throws kids in college into question.

Already happening, notice that Max charges for 4k now as well?
Yep, my cable plan's HBO subscription carried over to Max but with only 1080P. Before the Max app I could use the HBO Max app with full 4K/HDR/Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos resolution. Now I would have to cancel HBO from my cable and then pay $20/mo for the same content I used to get. My cable subscription to HBO is $15/mo and the Max Premium is $20/mo, $5/mo more than I’m paying now to my cable provider. It might be worth it.

But I am a firm believer in the free market and only time will tell if this business model succeeds. In the world of entertainment no one is entitled to anything at the price they think is fair. Don’t like the price? Don’t subscribe

But I wonder if it works similarly to how the downloads work where after a certain time you have to basically verify that you still have an active subscription and renew the lease for the movie/show, but what if you are on an extended travel and can't get to your home wifi within a certain timeframe. I know that the number of people that this impacts are probably a drop in the ocean, but if it does work this way those people will instantly be irritated.

They are justifying it by including Discovery+ content which is normally $5-7/month.

I wish they would have kept them separate. I have no interest in Discovery+.

It’s mind boggling that 4K is an extra charge in 2023. Personally, I‘m content with 1080P for the most part and will never pay more for a slightly better viewing experience for TV shows and movies that usually have no benefit at 4K.
Agreed. The fact that all content isn't available in 4K for free (meaning without an up-charge) in 2023 is ridiculous.

It's funny how streaming companies are losing customers, so now they're putting the squeeze on remaining customers hoping to stop the bleed.

I really, really hope people cancel Netflix and don't put up with this ****. I did last year when they pulled Star Trek. The password sharing crackdown just vindicated my decision. Then they raised prices, twice. Now HBO Max is raising prices again and charging for 4K.

There are a lot of people who don't watch much but keep subscriptions active because their friends/family are still using them. Those people are likely to cancel now when Netflix tries to charge them more.

At some point people ask themselves "is this really worth it?" and unsubscribe. I can see people subscribing to watch certain shows, then cancelling afterwards.

At one point streaming looked like it was going to be the answer to insanely expensive cable TV subscriptions. Now it's turning out to cost more if you want to be able to watch everything, and it's making old school cable subscriptions look affordable again.
