I'm not paying anything, my brother is. We share all sorts of streaming accounts. But I'm not paying for an additional Netflix stream because Netflix is trash. Simple really.
So you are not a customer, and cannot cancel anything. All this means is that they will stop incurring the cost of streaming to you, which, given that you think the service has no value, means you should not be watching anything.

From all indications Netflix doesnt seem to be doing that bad. I think as much as there is a vocal minority on MR that’s all it is. Hyperbole. People who think Netflix content is garbage should cancel. Why waste money on garbage?

It appears Netflix would rather have a solid user base than have all this password sharing. We’ll see where it goes but the faux outrage has to go.
I canceled two rate increases ago and haven't looked back.

People who think they should be able to create an account and share it for free with half a dozen other people are just crazy. There is no other service on the planet that allows you to sign up for something then share it for free with other people.

If you don't like the content anymore on Netflix, then just cancel it. That has nothing to do with sharing and it's what you're supposed to do in a capitalist economy.

Will cancel as soon as it happens. I share with my elderly mom who perhaps watches one show a week. As soon as that becomes a problem, I have no remaining reason to keep it. I'm already on the ad supported tier and have been struggling to find reasons to watch - especially as they limit what content is available on the ads tier.

So they will go from one paying customer to zero, not one to two. Ah well, will save a few bucks. 'twas a good run for a while. Plenty of other streaming services are around and there is simply too much content to consume.

Nice. Post your cancellation email!

Remember when Netflix tweeted "Love is sharing a password"? I do.

Back in ye olde days (2008-ish), I actually read through Netflix's terms because I had an account while I was away at grad school and wanted to know whether I could share it with my folks and younger sibling who still lived at home. With how Netflix defined "household" back then, sharing of that sort was allowed. A few years later when my housing situation changed I went back through the terms to see whether my family still fell under my "household", but the definitions had been updated or removed such that not even my original use was permissible.

I honestly don't fault Netflix for asking people to pay their own way, but sharing with one's household used to be a permissible use case that that provided value to its users. This new crackdown doesn't really change anything for me. It was the removal of that permission years ago when that value was lost. I removed my family members from my account and none of them subscribed on their own because it wasn't worth the asking price to them. To Netflix, that might have seemed like a "win"—my account cost them less to serve—but they've been so focused on short-term user churn—i.e. people rage-quitting over this policy change—that I'm not convinced they're considering the long-term effects on churn.

An account with more people is an account that is less likely to be cancelled because there are more people invested in using it. An account with fewer people is an account that can be closed on a whim without affecting others, which is a practice that is becoming increasingly adopted among the general population. There were entire years where I kept my account active just in case my family wanted to watch something. Without them on the account, there was nothing stopping me from unsubscribing on a whim when I didn't have something to watch. Which I did.

Instead of one account with four infrequently-used profiles that I kept open year-round just in case, Netflix currently has zero active accounts for my family. I'll re-up once or twice per year to watch what I want, then cancel again. That's their prerogative, but it's my bottom line that is better off for it.

Awaiting my email.

As my last meal I think i'll have a porterhouse steak with peppercorn sauce, thick cut potatoes, peas and grilled asparagus.

Hell yeah!

Let us know when you join back up next month
Nah I was mostly keeping my sub alive because friends and family still wanted to watch it with some frequency. Now that they don’t get to use it non of the plans really justify me keep paying. Plenty of other content to enjoy elsewhere. We’ll be happy with my new Plex server.

I rec’d email from Apple yesterday advising me that my Apple TV+ subscription renewal in July would be approx 40% higher than it costs now! I cancelled immediately. Sent TC a Twitter post saying IMHO programming did not improve by 40%. Real $ amount immaterial ($20/yr incr) but the point of Apple’s greed annoyed me enough to cancel.
Aka $2. But gotta push that percent since it looks better. I’m sure that tweet to Tim Cook was well received and they will reverse plans.

And I think EU will probably put an end to this practice on Netflix sooner or later with new consumer protection law allowing account sharing as “fair use”

Please cite the law ou are claiming will force streaming services to allow sharing.

I find that hard to believe as it would seriously impact many companies, and likely result in much higher pricing or some sort of per stream pricing modle where you get 1 stream for X, 2 for X+Y, etc., which would impact usrs who don't share but may have multiple streams running in the same house.

Someone help me understand how this works, because my spouse travels for work. Will we get flagged because she happens to be out of state and tries to watch something?

I don't know, but my guess is extended use at different IP address over a period of time at the same time may trigger it, but occasional use may not as it would be representative of teh subscriber traveling. Only time will tell.

I seriously hope this hurts their bottom line enough to reverse this decision since they want to make the stockholders happy, but I guess we will have to wait until maybe the next 1-2 earnings reports to see *fingers crossed*

I doubt it. I suspect a lot of users don't share, some will see the add on price as cheaper than 2 separate subscriptions, and some will simply stop sharing if the other party doesn't want to pay the added costs.

This is the wrong approach. I'm much happier terminating my Netflix account subscription.
Netflix has gotten so greedy. It's pretty sad.

The issue for Netflix may be how they pay for content. If it per viewer, sharing increases their costs with no revenue bump, hitting he bottom line. As a for profit, they need to try to ensure they can get the most money for their product.

Depending on consumer behavior and Netflix' economic model, they could wind up with more revenue and higher profits, even if they lose some subscribers.

I really don't understand the vitriol. Company sells product. Customer agrees to End user agreement and buys product. Customer gets mad when company enforces rules in agreement. For profit company attempts to stay profitable. Please help me understand the other side of this.

Don't think the password sharing is their problem - its the content.

I actually would have canceled my subscription long time ago because there is very limited good content there (maybe subscribe once a year for a month for the few good things), other streaming services provide better value for the money .... but thing is I have two netflix accounts for free (one payed for by T-Mobile, one payed for by Xfinity), so I never bothered canceling those, but paying for it every month would definitely not be worth it.
