I am seeing Netflix on my ATV 4K right now. Are you not seeing the Netflix App in your ATV or other devices? Did I misunderstand your sentence?

You are misunderstanding. Amazon Video, Hulu, and other services integrate directly into you TV APP (NOT Apple TV) on your Apple TV, allowing access to multiple apps of content in one place. You still have to pay separate subscriptions to the individual companies, it just makes for a better end-user experience. This, combined with the fact that Netflix has no hardware or comparable aggregate platforms competing with ATV or the TV App make it baffling why Netflix is being such a dick to end-users by refusing to integrate with the TV App.

First, Netflix still has an app, right? So who cares? A bundle’d save a few dollars a month tops. It’ll still be on an ATV, just not part of Apple’s streaming service. Unless Apple or Netflix decide to be babies about it and yank the app.

Second, regardless it seems to be that a big difference between Apple’s building an audio hub and a video hub is that the labels & stores knew they were doomed and needed Apple for distribution in a new medium, whereas the studios already have a zillion ways to stream content to us, sometimes including their own. Add to the earlier audio market few competitors and a marvelous new thing called an iPod and it’s easy to see how Apple’s mistaken if anyone in Cupertino thinks they can replicate their success in audio with success in video.

This story made me think that the balance is shifting perhaps not all the way back to the content owners but at least away from dominance of the distributor. First premium networks (eg HBO) developed original content, and now distribution channels (eg Netflix, Apple soon) are. They’re vying not just for customers but Academy Awards. It’s no longer good enough to just distribute content if you want to be on top; you need to create it. And if your creation is high quality, you’ll win awards and significantly earn recognition and grow business. From this longer term strategy perspective, Apple’s decision. She’s perfect sense to go outside their traditional wheelhouse and enter production. I don’t know if they’ll be good at it, but I do hope a couple of good shows come out of it. They almost have to try.

And they’ll still need Netflix.

As in "have more customers than Apple"?
As in largely unprofitable and struggling to make money.

No, Netflix doesn’t make much money and burns cash like it’s going out of style. Why? They have to buy and pay for content. It’s not their fault...it’s just the business they’re in.

Netflix has A LOT of work to do. This is a hobby for Apple.

I am shaking in my boots if I’m Netflix, actually. Netflix understands original content is EXPENSIVE and HARD to make. Most of Netflix content consumed is simply licensed (paid for) content and guess who has more money than anyone to pay for content? That’s right, Apple.

Pretty much only Disney has been successful long term in making their own original content, and they are starting their own service too.

Netflix is an App at the end of the day. Without cash and meaningful content, they are going to have a hard time.

Quick, name 5 original Netflix shows with any staying power. I can’t either.

Now name 5 for Disney. And what Disney didn’t create, they bought and now own.

Tough business.

Another service that once again is only for the USA.

You need to remember that Apple Music is not US exclusive. Almost everyone in the world can enjoy Apple Music, it is an excellent service and priced accordingly with every region (this is something Apple would never do with their hardware)

Also, while only sits in #2, it is a much healthier market than Spotify since AM relies 100% on paid subscription. Spotify on the other hand seems to be #1, but it consists of 70 - 80% freeloaders which hardly means anything, even with ads. Spotify should really think about its sustainability.

I really hope that Apple video service would pick up just as well and compete with Netflix, maybe even surpass them with the combo of original contents and box office contents. I mean Apple had iTunes Movies, the biggest video store in the world. Let's hope the same for its upcoming service.

Okay - I get it now.

I never use the TV App on ATV because the listing inside is cluttered and messy - makes it complicated. I have the top row lined with the most used Apps and access directly.

Does it make a difference how one gets to a program? If so, how?

I hope there is something more to the Apple service. If it is going to be a Netflix look alike will be a huge disappointment.

@reedhastings "We want to have people watch our shows on our services.”

That’s iterally how the Apple TV app works... It lets you watch shows on apps where they’re available... The fact that PrimeVideo and Hulu (& 100+ other apps) support it just makes them look conceited & arrogant.

Even if they aren’t part of the new package, their support for the Up Next feature is long overdue. Netflix has great content! Original and otherwise! Supporting Siri is awesome (thank you for that!), so let’s fully support the Apple TV app!

Netflix has nothing to worry about with Apple churning out shows like Carpool Karaoke and Planet of the Apps.

Let’s reserve judgement until they launch.

The point of that was the business is hard and BUYING content is just as effective.

Apple can buy anything they want, including all of Disney, straight up ...just as an example.

Just use Apple streaming, Netflix streaming, Amazon streaming, Hulu streaming, CBS streaming, HBO streaming, Disney streaming, etc.

How many different streaming services will the average family subscribe to ?

I’m at three (Hulu, Netflix, HBO) and won’t be subscribing to any more. If I eventually want something else I’ll just cancel one of those three, probably HBO or Netflix for awhile.

How many years does a show have to be on to qualify as having staying power? Because orange is the new black, the defenders series, house of cards, and fuller house feel like they have had staying power.

It’s no longer good enough to just distribute content if you want to be on top; you need to create it.

This should be a crime.

I sure hope someday there is a way to get all these streaming services all in one place for one monthly bill instead of being bled with smaller cuts of 20 dollars or so each. You know? Sorta like what Cable TV is?

The only reasons I have an Apple TV is for HomeKit support, HBO, and MLB.tv. Otherwise, I’d toss it in the garbage because the user experience with that stupid remote is enfuriating. There is no way I’d succomb to more of that pain by willingly engaging in a streaming service from Apple which only exists on their platforms. I don’t want/need an iPad and would not subscribe just to stream to my iPhone.

HBO? Does that mean Game of Thrones S8 will be on the Apple TV channel? That would be a coup.
The timing of their announcement with S8 about to go out would make sense.
If true, that’s lots of subscriptions all at once. Roll out had better be smooth or they’ll have a big facial omelette on April 14th.

I thought I hated cable, but the grass isn’t always greener....

HBO is aired by Foxtel in Australia so I doubt the new subscription service will be coming to Australia in the same form as the U.S. I'm thinking Disney might preview Disney + at the event and possibly Hulu might be part of the service (not sure how'd that work though!!!)
