I cancelled Netflix many, many years ago when it became clear they were just shoveling junk into their platform. The days of premiere, halo properties like House of Cards are way behind us now.

That said, I know I'm a total outlier in terms of having cancelled Netflix. Their subscriber numbers are doing great. Even their most recent subscriber drop was entirely due to having pulled out of Russia. When I cancelled, I stopped thinking about them (hence my mention of House of Cards, which has been over for many years) and I don't need them to fail or anything.

Also, a lot of the commentary about cancelling due to a crackdown on password sharing feels petty and silly. Netflix hasn't done anything wrong here. They feel that if you use the service in a separate residence, you should pay for it, and that's a defensible position.
I'm with you, besides Stranger Things they don't have any good original shows anymore, and they lost all the Marvel shows to Disney. There's just too much competition now, makes no sense to pay anything more than $9.99 for any streaming service. HBO is next to go.

When cable started there were no ads. Now cable charges you and has ads.
While cable tv didn't have ads in the very beginning, it wasn't their intention for the service to be solely supported by subscribers.

From July 26, 1981

Although cable television was never conceived of as television without commercial interruption, there has been a widespread impression - among the public, at least -that cable would be supported largely by viewers' monthly subscription fees. These days, however, as cables are laid across the country and new programs constantly pop up to fill the gaping maw, cable experts are talking as glibly about the potential advertising revenues as they are about opportunities for programming.

Paying to watch ads. Unbelievable. I'll stick with my ad-free Disney+, HBO Max, and Netflix for now, but pretty soon I'm going to cancel all of them. The prices for ad-free plans have skyrocketed are now approaching $20 a month. That's the sweet spot where much of your audience starts to turn to piracy.

How is Netflix still not in their prime? Not only is it the most popular streaming service amoung teens and young adults (which happens to be the most sought after demographic) but it's also the most popular streaming service in the world

and U.S. consumers would rather go hungry than cancel their Netflix subscription

BBC iPlayer is easily the most popular in the UK

Let's not forget that before this they were making people pay $9.99 a month for 480p. Now it's 720p 😂
The example of HD versus Full HD (720P/1080i) is still out there in the states with normal OTA content. It’s still what they are used to. Just look at PlutoTV with its classic online content. 720P still looks good against 480p.

The positive about streaming, buy what meets one’s needs. The set it and forget model does not work well with streaming.

I agree with you that their subscription tiers and crackdown on password sharing is dumb when they encouraged it before. Some here though will disagree with you (and me) and might even call your grandmother a thief

I'll probably cancel too if I get notified. I'm thinking Netflix will annouce crackdown during their next earnings report in late April and start cracking down in the U.S. beginning in May.
The people calling her a thief are not to be taken seriously. Why would one person need to pay for two simultaneous streams for themselves? Literally NO PURPOSE. The distinction between living in the same dwelling is arbitrary. Especially, as you said, they BRAGGED ABOUT IT BEFORE.

I don't like the fact that you can only get the lowest tier with the ads. Let us pick any tier with ads and save $3 off the base price.
I hope it never becomes that bad. :D
Low cost ad-supported will be the new way to enjoy streaming For penny pinchers.

Just be happy it’s not something you’ll sink to. :D

But companies insist on throwing ads into the middle of things, ruining the viewing experience.
That is so absurd and naive. If you don't want to pay more for an ad free experience, that's your prerogative. But stop complaining. These companies owe you nothing just because you're alive and watch TV. There in business to make money and everything they do is aimed toward that goal. If you think you deserve the service for free, please move to a socialist/communist country.
Netflix video and sound quality is superb. I can easily afford it and enjoy quality video on my 75" Sony Z9K. Those that would enjoy Netflix if they could afford it, well get a better education and job.
I'm actually picky about what I watch. I'm currently enjoying three series on Netflix. It's a great channel for a great value. If you can't afford Netflix, how can you afford to go see a movie at the theater?

Netflix' "International content" is the key to its worldwide success.
For years they have invested heavily on "original content" from many different countries around the world.
This catalog alone makes it more attractive to international viewers around the world than any other streaming service (quality of the content aside).

Imagine paying $7/month for only 720p streaming AND 5 minutes of ads per hour... No thanks.
Then don't pay it. 90% of the posts in this thread are simply moaning and groaning about how you don't want to pay Netflix's "exorbitant" (in your mind) price. I love Netflix and am happy to pay top tier. And I don't steal it as so many others do.
