In completely, entirely, radically unrelated news: Transmission has recently been updated with native Apple Silicon support
And that is the exact play right there.I mean… for three dollars a month you might as well get rid of the ads. At least the basic plan is 720p now.
As you probably know this cheaper ad subscription tier makes more money for Netflix. Yes with ads it’s not attractive to anyone use to VoD binging. But it allows a lot of less fussy new subscribers to sample NetFlix and opt for the ad-free subscriptions if they want. There are numerous VoD host subscriptions that use this ploy, cheaper plan, lower resolution, additional ad revenue. They really can’t lose. It even contributes to everyone else using higher tier subscriptions. And that is the exact play right there.
They want you to imagine paying for ads and the convenience to the UX for the sake of $3 while at the same time creating a revenue stream for advertisers they can sell in.
Thats the initial policy for Apple TV + from Apple currently. Yes it would certainly antagonize loyal customers. There's a reason you'll never see ads on Apple TV+ or even the free radio stations on Apple Music.
I thought the Apple TV subscription wasn't supposed to have ads! Shame on you, Apple! May the ghost of Steve Jobs haunt you.
But if it's on Apple TV, it's not supposed to have ads, right? That's why we pay for an Apple TV subscription!
There's a reason you'll never see ads on Apple TV+ or even the free radio stations on Apple Music.
Are they still going?
We followed the same path. Now when I got to people’s houses where they have the TV on just to be on I find it jarring. The same with restaurants and other public spaces. Growing up my mom called TV the “idiot box”. She wasn’t wrong.I cut the cord awhile ago and quickly realized how much time I wasted watching a TV screen. Even just having it on in the background felt toxic.
Then I switched to a streaming service and enjoyed choosing what and when I watched a program, and without ads. I found I watched a lot less TV.
I've since cut out streaming too and don't miss it for a second. At some point I may go back to a media service but only if I can buy programming al a carte and without ads.
I have Premium. My point was that even at "only" $7, basic with ads isn't worth the cost of admission, especially due to the low quality streaming. Then don't pay it. 90% of the posts in this thread are simply moaning and groaning about how you don't want to pay Netflix's "exorbitant" (in your mind) price. I love Netflix and am happy to pay top tier. And I don't steal it as so many others do.
I don’t think it’s cynical greed as much as it is their debt service that has them scrambling. They routinely borrowed upwards of 20 billion a year or more to create original programming. And really, why not, because there was no inflation at the time and loans were essentially free. Now, however, interest rates have gone up dramatically, and a lot of the money they owe is subject to the higher rates of interest. They are in some deep doo with this problem, I believe.Cancelled Netflix. I paid for a plan that allowed for two simultaneous streams, so my grandma could watch. With their recent “crackdown”, they stopped that from being possible since we don’t live in the same house.
I pay for TWO SIMULTANEOUS STREAMS. What is it to them that my grandma uses it in a different location. Netflix showed themselves to be complete b*stards with this quest of theirs. Gladly cancelled and just introduced her to the other streaming services I subscribe to. They won’t be missed.
EDIT: To those who are actually downvoting this (haha), I say “downvote all you want to defend a desperate and arbitrary policy, but the basic truth is this: Netflix lost my business, and they’ll lose more business because of their cynical greed.” Downvoting won’t get them that money back. Don’t sell plans that allow for two simultaneous streams and then say my CLOSE family member can’t use the second stream. BYE!
Unfortunately, watching YouTube without a subscription has become intolerable due to the amount and frequency of ads.
Same, I find most ads invasive and actually cause me to have a negative feeling about the product or company. We followed the same path. Now when I got to people’s houses where they have the TV on just to be on I find it jarring. The same with restaurants and other public spaces. Growing up my mom called TV the “idiot box”. She wasn’t wrong.
There are plenty of good ad blockers that work in Youtube and other web based platforms. I never watch any video on my iOS devices so I can't speak to that though. If I watch something it tends to be YouTube, which has a lot of good creator content. Unfortunately, watching YouTube without a subscription has become intolerable due to the amount and frequency of ads.
You paid for two simultaneous stream in your house. (Read the terms of the subscription). It does matter to Netflix -- they never offered your grandmother (or you) a 1/2 price subscription. Since you don't agree, its good that you cancelled.I pay for TWO SIMULTANEOUS STREAMS.
Since you had to insult them, edit to minimise what you posted, then flex toward me with words I never used. And I need some self care😂Where did I say I was emotionally battered? I said the only reason to downvote is simply to be contrarian since Netflix’s actions are petty and indefensible.
Perhaps you are the one who needs to engage in some “self-care”.
To be fair, this is pretty similar to the cable TV model where you pay for channels but the channels still serve you ads.Who would pay to watch ads? It should be free or not offered at all.
It’s a public company and it’s intentions, as much as Apple’s and Disney’s, are only driven by share price to please majoritarian shareholders.Easy, GREED. The poor CEO is only making 20 million a year. I mean, how can he live?
720p is what your iPhone will play on any streaming service regardless of what you payWOW! 4 to 5 mn ads per hour and a resolution from the 1980ies! I can't wait to pay for that... NOT!
