Who would pay to watch ads? It should be free or not offered at all.

Millions and millions do and have for ages. A pay/ad hybrid model for content has long been the norm for newspapers, magazines, and television. Streaming services like Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Netflix, and Paramount+ also offer pay ad-supported plans and others are likely to in the future.

The good thing here is that a Netflix (and some other streaming service) subscriber has a CHOICE of going with ad-free or saving a few bucks a month and going with ad-supported. With newspapers, magazines, etc., you typically didn't have that choice e.g., there was no Time magazine with ads and Time magazine without. You paid for the content AND it had ads.

I agree with you that their subscription tiers and crackdown on password sharing is dumb when they encouraged it before. Some here though will disagree with you (and me) and might even call your grandmother a thief

I'll probably cancel too if I get notified. I'm thinking Netflix will annouce crackdown during their next earnings report in late April and start cracking down in the U.S. beginning in May.
Netflix never encouraged password sharing with 300 of your closest friends.

Then don't pay it. 90% of the posts in this thread are simply moaning and groaning about how you don't want to pay Netflix's "exorbitant" (in your mind) price. I love Netflix and am happy to pay top tier. And I don't steal it as so many others do.
It is simply ignorant to call what many are complaining about as defending “stealing”. Willful ignorance of history and reality. What is the purpose of someone paying a higher price for multiple simultaneous streams if they can’t use it with a family member? Netflix loses no money when comparing between a family member in the next room be the next house over. AGAIN, the distinction between in-household and out-of-household is arbitrary, cynical, and simply a reaction to Netflix’s sinking fortunes. They know they’re in a pickle, so they changed their tune. If you think letting your grandmother use your second stream is stealing, you can’t be helped. Simply an apologist for a company that messed up.

What do you mean “can’t be helped”? He’s entitled to be an apologist for a company where you dont like the policies and you’re entitled to drop the service. Another person is entitled to be a critic.

I think their policies are out of touch with other streaming services but I’m not dropping them I like the variety and content. And I pay for my kids in other locations.

Good for you. If you think it’s normal for a FAMILY to pay for SEVERAL SEPARATE FULL-PRICE accounts, when part of the premium you pay for certain tiers is that you get multiple simultaneous streams….why would a single individual pay for multiple streams? Why does Netflix tie those streams to other upgrades? Why did Netflix brag for years that people can share their passwords? Why does Netflix draw a distinction between a family member in the next room vs a family member down the road, so long as the subscriber is not giving their password out to some absurd number of people?

Netflix realized their strategy of releasing an endless stream of garbage content, with some gems, as they lost rights to major properties was a disaster and now they’re enforcing arbitrary rules to try to recover. All while in other countries they create lower price tiers to accommodate…but they won’t here will they.

The point is, your friend that you’re defending is using ignorant, intentionally-inflammatory language, calling people thieves. No, someone using what they pay for (two simultaneous streams) with one other family member and nothing beyond that is not stealing. What is being used is what you are paying for. Netflix just decided to change their tune because they see they’re going in a bad direction. And anyone who tries to simplistically characterize what I mentioned as thievery is just being smug and nasty. Not all things are the same. Netflix seems to not realize that, and neither do the sycophants that you mention.

You have to ask Netflix for the answer.

Some peoples garbage content is other people’s want to watch content.

You’re entitled to dislike their policies and drop the service. I don’t blame you, but it is what it is.

They openly encouraged password sharing for years. If they did against their TOS, they’re trash. If they changed their ToS…they’re trash. It’s a pathetic policy. Again…you pay for two streams. It shouldn’t matter to them that the person lives in the next room, across the street, whatever. You’re paying for it. Happy to cancel and will never go back.
It is, but ya know what... corporations change :\ How many of us wish we had the Apple of decades past?

I really do think it shouldn't be limited to the same household (i mean hell, you can share an account anyways in that case). Nothing much else than to vote with your wallet [shrug]

Exactly! Especially until they split streams from quality. If you can't get higher quality with the number of streams you need, then use them as you see fit, especially since they encouraged it hard before.
