Anyone successfully get Firefox 3 to work with the proxy. All my other apps work if I put the Proxy info in, but not FF3...

If you're on a Mac, try using Safari. Firefox and Camino have their own proxy settings, there's instructions floating around here somewhere (not sure if it's this thread, or another one) how to configure the proxy for Firefox and Camino..

Reality

Folks..

This app turns your iPhone into a PROXY SERVER for one or more MACs/PCs to connect to your phone through WIFI. You only can use it with iPhone, no other type of phone. What happens is the data is PROXYd through your phone to your PC and AT&T cannot disgunish between data to your iPhone and to your Computer through the proxy. What will happen is if AT&T decides to run an audit on your account and sees that you downloaded 30GB to your phone, they will know something is up.

I actually do something similar without paying for a tethering plan with my Samsung Blackjack to my XP laptop. The Blackjack has an Internet Connection Sharing app that actually does NAT and gives REAL internet access without a proxy. I do this all without AT&T knowing and wanting an extra $40 per month for a teathering plan. I just make sure I don't ABUSE it as thats when they catch on.

As far as anyone who buys this app, or eventually an App that does real NAT instead of a proxy: be warned.. DO NOT ABUSE this capability as AT&T can certainly decide to cancel your account or charge you $ per kByte you download on your phone, even though you are paying for an unlimited data package..

netshare by nullriver.
vista instructions not available yet.
p.s. sorry about you catching a vista, i hope you cure it soon.
Alight, just for the record, I am a Mac person, and I prefer Macs. I dislike Microsoft and I like Apple a lot. However, IMHO, Vista is much better than XP, and, Vista isn't even that bad. I find it usable... Leopard is much better though.

guys, somebody who has used this please log into their account and view your text usage. im not shittin you! this thing is using my texts up!

Do you understand the concept of a proxy?

Do you?

Using your iPhone as your proxy does not offer you anonymity like a web proxy does -- all AT&T has to do is look up your account.

So, without anonymity, the only thing that remains is for them to develop something to say if [common connection schema, i.e. WoW] is detected, look up account, terminate account, put in ticket to call customer and inform them.

Proxies are only "safe" when the proxy isn't a device that is directly tied to your personal information.

Again, anybody who believes that they can use NetShare and hide from AT&T (IF AT&T is seriously interested in finding them) is dead wrong.

Will I still use my NetShare app? Yes, just as soon as I spend some time making sure that AT&T doesn't !@#$ people over for doing it.

WTF! I looked at my texts after using this for about 2 minutes...it says ive used 20 texts! Everyone needs to check their texts. I have the 1500 (but the site only displays 950) after i got down to 950, it says i used 1 of 950. After using the tether, it says i used 21 of 950!

this guy keeps asking people and i'm curious too. i wanna download the app, but dont wanna waste £5.99 if its gonna eat away at my texts.

Actually pretty fast!!

I finally got home today after downloading the app at work and with 2 bars of 3G, I can load webpages almost as fast as my cable connection. I loaded the nissanusa.com website which runs on flash only and it was pretty fast. Also, iTunes store loads which is nice.

I don't plan to use this at home, it is nice to have on business trips if needed.

I only have a problem with paying $10 for something that is free if you jail break (which is also free.) It also comes free on Windows Mobile phones. I don't know about Palm or Blackberry.

The app may be free for Jailbreak iphones, but there is still a cost to it. And really, whats wrong with somebody making money? It's not overpriced, it's useful and when supported the company can make even more good products which jailbreak users will probably get to beta test for the rest of us, for free. :)

What's the big deal?

I have a sony ericsson w810i and i can tether use it to connect my computer to the internet no problem using bluetooth. yeah, it's not the fastest thing in the in the world but it works solid..and with all my web apps, mail, IM and safari. It's actually kind of ridiculous this isn't built into the iPhone directly. Another disappointment in a long line from this phone, which i still can't bring myself to buy. There are just too many "buts."

nevermind i was helllla trippin' I guess it took a little time for ATT to update all the texts i sent last night. Works perfectly!

I must be the only dumbass mac user that can't set this thing up any help would be nice....

read this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/535316/

did that and still didn't work then try this from the linked thread:

Sometimes I can't get my laptop to tether to the iPhone, so I use this trick to "wake up" the iPhones AT&T data connection. Do the following if you've followed the first post's directions to a T and you still can't connect:

1. Go to the wifi settings on the iPhone and shut it completely off
2. open MobileSafari (or just wait) to get the iPhone to start using the data connection (3G or Edge), make sure you see the little "E" or "3G" symbol on the phone, NOT the wifi broadcast icon
3. *now* go back to the iPhone's wifi settings, turn it back on, make sure it's connecting to the "iPhone tethering" access point (or whatever you named it)
4. quickly open up NetShare, hopefully the laptop will connect now

NUTSHELL: Basically just make sure the AT&T data connection on the iPhone is on, *active*, and working; THEN open up NetShare to broadcast that connection to your laptop.

Edit: I'd like to emphasize my use of the word "active" again. You have to make sure that the iPhone is not only switched on to using an AT&T data connection, but that it is actually in use. This means that the iPhone is not only listening for the data signal but also that a connection has been made with an AT&T cell tower. In other words, make sure you actually see some data going into your phone when you open up MobileSafari; browse to a real page and see something. Then switch on the wifi and quickly open NetShare before the iPhone decides it prefers the wifi over the 3G/Edge.

One more note: for anyone who's saying that NetShare is buggy because it doesn't seem to work reliably, it's only "unreliable" because of the iPhone preferred connection can be switched on the fly automatically be the phone. Apple put this (good) behavior on the phone for a reason (switching from wifi->3G or vice versa when appropriate), which is what makes NetShare work only sometimes. Which is why you have to force off the wifi when it is currently in use by the iPhone. Which is also why your NetShare tether will stop working when the phone goes to sleep (it switches off the 3G to save battery life) after a few minutes. This modal switching behavior is good for usability and battery life but bad for an app that (hackily) depends on a stable connection mode.

Hmm, sorry if this has been asked but I'm not sure how the ports/proxies etc work on web-based apps..

Does Meebo work over this thing?

I can think of situations where i might want to IM someone quicker than possible with the plinky plink keyboard on the iphone. If that works that'd be an easy solution to the faffing around with proxy settings for IM apps. I'd use that if im away from home for a week probably.

I've used the app for about 10-15mins..

I looked on the website and they haven't deducted any texts from my account..

Yah, there was a delay with ATT posting txts used from last night. I just now saw that data and txts are not posted immediately.

OK this is working very well, I have switched to this from my network and posting from here. All seems well and this will be great to help me get online in the many stupid airports that dont offer FREE wifi. Great job to NullRiver again! Top App for sure!

Very interesting - I don't think I'll download it anytime soon as I don't have a real need for it but if I get an iTunes card or something I'll probably try it out

wow, I am using this now. So simple to set up, and its pretty fast even on edge, Its great!! well worth £6.
