ok, i'm just about to download this app even though i don't have my 3G iphone yet, but don't want to miss out again. but i've a quick question...

basically, i'm off to uni in september and would normally have to pay a massive amount of money to get the net in my dorm. i'd actually considered a 3g dongle for the net, but i'm now more interested in getting this for free.

but, what i'm curious about is, say i visit the macrumors home page. am i right in saying it would take just as much data when viewing it on the iphone than when tethered to my macbook?

i just dont want to end up with a very large bill from o2 if they realise i've been using the iphone tethered. i never download things from but torrent sites and what not, and the only largest thing i ever download is free apps and stuff. so, just want to cover my back.

thanks

Well it worked on me.

I bought it.

10$ for emergency bandwidth to me is like keeping a flash light and other spare items in the trunk of you car. You never know when you might need them.

My thoughts exactly. Great to have just in case.

I BT-dunned for 2 years on Verizon without problems.
However, if you are going to the university, why not just get the ethernet or wifi there?? After all that's the university if for: learning how to pilage massive amounts of pirated stuff from the net

I just submitted a rumor but it seems that ATT is having major network issues and has warned all of the major companies, hospitals, etc. that use ATT for connectivity about these issues. I wonder what happened... too many iphones downloading massive amounts of data, he he ...:D

Well, one business case might actually encourage this. You have a lot of push now for people to buy a cell phone with a more expensive plan to handle all their voice calls and drop their home phone. And a lot of people, especially the younger generation, are doing just this. Bell is laying people off because of this and losing money.

Why not encourage data use so that one day people will ditch their home DSL/Cable as well as their home phone and buy everything from AT&T/Rogers, whoever? Sure, there would be some growing pains and additional build-out required, but you have to think ahead. A company taking the right steps could generate a lot of goodwill and customer support and would have a large pool of future customers to draw from. Plus the company could position itself as the leader of "pure wireless" or whatever they want to call it.

One device, one phone, one Internet, anywhere in the world. Common, where's the vision?

perhaps - vision yes, although this assumes a bit more egalitarian (and less profit-driven) vision. I'm with you, but since AT&T apparently charges for their tethering plans, one would figure they'd charge for this as well.

also, a quick look at the 3G maps for AT&T show how far off that vision would be. There are many places that are relatively well covered. but there are others (including entire states) that are not. I briefly explored the possibility of iphone since my VZW contract is up in a bit, and after looking at the actual coverage maps, i just couldn't do it.

I for one, hate the unrealistic data caps of 5GB. my blackberry is unlimited, and i cant see how I'd possibly hit that much usage in a month. My broadband connect access card has a soft cap of 5GB (i signed up before they started charging) - but if you surf frenetically (multiple tabs) and view much multimedia content, it's easy to hit 5GB. Easy.

You have to figure the Iphone data plans (in the US) were priced assuming the difficulty it would take to hit 5GB a month - if you intro tethering, and all of a sudden people can hit it no problem, they'll find a way to charge you (hopefully as a flat rate, not as a per MB/GB charge)

OK, I got it working.

I had to undo the entire setup (delete the network off my mac, forget the network on the iphone), reboot the mac, and re-do everything. It works now. Be sure to put 1080 as the port on the socks proxy.

YAY

i was gonna say that, but forgot. if i ever needed to download large files the university building has free wifi. unfortunately, my dorm doesn't, so just need something for when im in my flat.

WTF! I looked at my texts after using this for about 2 minutes...it says ive used 20 texts! Everyone needs to check their texts. I have the 1500 (but the site only displays 950) after i got down to 950, it says i used 1 of 950. After using the tether, it says i used 21 of 950!

Up and running

I just downloaded it today, and it is working just fine.

Follow the detail thread on how to use it and you'll be set.

It's nice to have. Get it.

uses

i look forward to the next river trip and sitting by the river in the morning with coffee and macrumors for breakfast before another day of tubing. during our last trip i sat on our landing taking and emailing pictures of tubers with my iphone and this could speed that up with quicker typing, maybe.

What's the name of this app?

Could someone post the name of this net tethering app on the app store? Is it shown on iTunes to view?

i haven't read all the pages before so if this has already been answered then i apologize and would appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction to find the answers...

Will this work with a laptop running Windows Vista? and if so does anyone have a set up guide for use with a Vista based machine?

I don't want to download it then not be able to use it on my laptop.

Thanks in advance

Matt

Ok guys...I created a video for this and I'll post the link when I get a chance.

First off,you need to download Proxifier from proxifier.com

Here ya go:

1) Setup a new network on windows(call it netshare)

a. To do this you need to go into your network connections and right click on your wireless connection. Then click the wireless networks tab. Click add. Name your network whatever. I call mine "netshare." Set net authentication to open and data encryption to disabled. click the box on the bottom that says "this is a computer to computer ad-hoc network"

2) Connect to the ad-hoc network by disconnecting all other connections.

3) Go to the wifi networks on your iphone and select netshare. Set the IP address to 192.168.10.1 and the subnet to 255.255.255.0. Use Static

4) Go to the TCP/IP settings and set your computer's IP.
a. To do this you need to right click on your wireless connection and click properties.
b. left click on Internet Protocol TCP/IP and select properties.
c. select the use the following ip address box
d. set your ip to 192.168.10.2
e. set your subnet to 255.255.255.0
f. select ok

5) Run the proxifier program

6) click the proxy settings button on the tool bar

7) Click Add then enter 192.168.10.1 in the address and set the port to 1080. select Socks ver 5 and click ok

8) Open netshare on your iphone

9) test your connection using the proxy checker

10) Netshare should show your connections at 1 and the data rates

11) Open your browser and you should have internet access through your phone.

ENJOY!

name

netshare by nullriver.
vista instructions not available yet.
p.s. sorry about you catching a vista, i hope you cure it soon.

This is a hack at best. Manually having to reconfigure ALL my applications to use a proxy? Then reconfigure them back when I get back to the office?

How about an app that does this *properly* and uses the bluetooth connection of the iPhone, like every other phone does?

Why on earth are Apple locking the bluetooth down? Is bluetooth even accessible from 3rd party applications?

Can someone review this and let us know how it works? Thanks.

it works perfectly...but you have to be careful with the data...this downloads tons of data, that will raise flags with AT&T regarding your acct...AT&T can then charge you up the wazu or cancel your account out right...AT&T prohibits tethering with the Iphone:mad:

Based on these rules the whole App store would be forbidden because you are downloading games and applications. You Tube would be out too, because it streams video content.

That's exactly what I'm getting at... How well enforced or accurate can that be if the contract basically says you can't use the applications pre-loaded?

Doesn't the iPhone has it's own specific Terms of Service?

The link that the OP referenced (which I was simply quoting from) is the iPhone Terms of Service.

Anyone successfully get Firefox 3 to work with the proxy. All my other apps work if I put the Proxy info in, but not FF3...
