Does anybody know whether this app would work with just GPRS? Basically I live in an area with no EDGE or 3G reception but get by fine on GPRS for mails and very basic surfing. In fact I've had my original iPhone since November and have only seen the 2G icon appear once. It's fun to pretend I am still using a 56k modem but I'd like to use this with my Macbook sometimes if I could.

Windowx XP update?

Any update on how well this functions with exx-pee?

And it is now available via search as many have posted already (not sure why I repeated it, but w/e)

At&t

FYI -

I spoke with AT&T in regard to this APP earlier today. The AT&T rep assured me that "unlimited" data really meant "unlimited" data - no Excessive charges will be billed. ALso, she stated that with the 3G phone plan - tethering is allowed...

BOTTOM LINE - Seems as though AT&T is aware and OK with this... Wow - what contacting AT&T will do for you (i.e. a few of you earlier commenters!)

Peace...

My vote for APP OF THE MONTH!

I had three MAC's networked off of one iPhone. Dangerous, but easily went back to the ATT UVerse Broadband.

ATT don't take this away from us!

man what an awesome app... just thinking of driving across the country and having internet on the macbook during the long ride, or more simply when your own home service goes down and there's no wifi available.

Call them back and get that on recording. You may need it to fight the charges "IF" they end up doing anything.

I spoke to an AT&T rep about this and your account will be flagged. I am not sure what they will do but it would be interesting.

I don't think that's confirmation enough. Willing to experiment? Call 10 times, speak to 10 different reps, and get back to us.

I'd like to hear something "official".

Testing it now but it does seem to be working I'm posting on my Macbook Air right now tethered to my iPhone 3G. If AT&T let's this go then I can finally ditch my laptop connect card when I travel.

No, but AT&T charges extra for this on other phones. iPhone users DID sign a contract saying they wuoldn't. So the question is, did Apple get a deal made where iPhone users don't have to pay it?

Or will you see an extra charge on your bill next month?

Or...something else?

So no, it's no against the LAW, but we really don't know what will happen if you use this for a month. None of us knows.

You are not supposed to get exchange mailbox with the 30 data plan either. But you can do it because the feature is there. I dont understand why not disable that ability if you arent supposed to do it or plainly say yes you cant or no you cant. It seems like apple and at&t dont know what you can or cannot do or doesnt want to disclose it to the public.

LMAO...

"Official" gonna come from macrumors post-boards??? haha...

Just offering some info that I received from AT&T --- I am sure you could give them a ring as well ;)

Ciao!

Does anyone else get disconnected when your iPhone goes to sleep (when "Auto-Lock" kicks in)?

Any way around this? Do I have to set the Auto-Lock setting to Never and leave my iPhone's screen turned on while tethering?

No, but you'll find it here very shortly after it does, as with most things regarding Apple and it's partners.

Welcome to MacRumors and thanks for the effort.

BTW.. who claimed you'd hear it here first?

LOL... Hey bud... Relax --- I was just offering some info I received - the same of which is available to you if you call AT&T like I did . And FYI - I understand the quick posts that macrumors provides - however, I will choose to verify with AT&T and not leave it up to the boards of the world.

Ciao!

LOL! It's stock is going up!

Glad I bought in "on the ground floor". The pricing on the App Store is fun to watch. I wonder why other retailers don't float their prices in near-real-time based on demand?

It was notated on the account :)

Thanks...

Personally I think taht's the way they handle it. The thing is, Apple really changed the mobile industry in one respect (and it's not the touchscree UI):

They made data use on wireless networks much more user-friendly.

Basically we can have some very safe assumptions:

1. No one in their right mind will discard his wired internet connection at home to just fall back to 3G speeds. 3G tethering can be a major PITA considering speed. *currently waits for his 25Mbit/s line hitting the house*

2. WoW over 3G tethering? You guys must be joking. I can't believe, that this will run fluently.

3. iPhone tethering will be used by many people on occasion, i.e. maybe about twice to three times a month. You can use many free WLAN spots on the road, you know.

4. 5GB is a hell lot of traffic. Even 24 hrs. of heavy internet usage on the road won't give you that (excluded you're using it to watch HD p0rn streams).

5. The main attraction currently is the novelty of it. Many nerds jump on it and try it out. Give it a week, and nobody will tether anymore.

6. People using P2P on it are just plain dumb. You could also start to wear a shirt saying "I pirate media! SOSUMI!"

Bottom line:
I guess Apple and AT&T just will watch the market for a month or two. Maybe then they reevaluate.

Here's what AT&T says :

UNLIMITED PLANS CANNOT BE USED FOR UPLOADING, DOWNLOADING OR STREAMING OF VIDEO CONTENT (E.G. MOVIES, TV), MUSIC OR GAMES. FURTHERMORE, UNLIMITED PLANS (EXCEPT FOR DATACONNECT AND BLACKBERRY TETHERED) CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY APPLICATIONS THAT TETHER THE DEVICE (THROUGH USE OF, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, CONNECTION KITS, OTHER PHONE/PDA-TO-COMPUTER ACCESSORIES, BLUETOOTH® OR ANY OTHER WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY) TO LAPTOPS, PCS, OR OTHER EQUIPMENT FOR ANY PURPOSE.

That implies a person cant stream music on the iphone either..
I'm guessing the rules have changed otherwise Pandora and AOL Radio would be against the rules too.

Based on these rules the whole App store would be forbidden because you are downloading games and applications. You Tube would be out too, because it streams video content.

In the UK. Got it and it works well. Adium and Safari with no problem. However, I just can't get Mail to work - I presume this is a SOCKS 5 issue. Is there any way that anyone knows how to get Mail to work via this? I already have a 3-Mobile USB broadband for my MBA but this will be useful for when I get a cr*p network reception for the 3-mobile (like I often do!). Any help appreciated

John

however, I will choose to verify with AT&T and not leave it up to the boards of the world.

And, yet, it's exactly what you've done.

My point was that it was simply a rep that you spoke to and not some official word, that's all.

Though thanks, again.

I recently purchased a MSI Wind and will be running Linux, OpenSUSE 11, on it and would be interested in tethering for Firefox web browsing. Would it work in a setup like this?

Doesn't the iPhone has it's own specific Terms of Service?

Thanks Severe... I think we all hope that unlimited really only has one meaning. Very useful app if so...

I tried to setup this up with my work laptop and I can get everything connected and seeing each other, but it will not load a webpage. I don't get an error or anything, just some wierd symbol at the top left corner of the IE window which tells me everything is ok with the connection.

-I went into TCP/IP settings and set a manual IP address 192.168.10.2.
-Setup a computer to computer Wi-Fi connections.
-Connected my iPhone to Wi-Fi connection.
-Put Static IP address on iPhone as 192.168.10.1
-Setup Proxy in IE to 192.168.10.1 Port 1080.

And nothing, I just get that funky symbol in IE. Don't know much about networking and this whole SOCKS5 Proxy, but not sure if this exists for Windows.
Internet Explorer?! Are you serious?!??!?!?!.?!?!?!?!?!? There is your problem. Well... It's not compatible with any browser other than Safari.

The fact that this is not true tethering DOES NOT, I repeat, DOES NOT prevent them from finding out that you are using this internet sharing app.

Simply put, the iPhone is a device of limited capability. Many people have said they want to use this for WoW.

Do you honestly believe they can't check the ports and server addresses of their logs and locate people who have.. "somehow".. managed to log into WoW on their iPhone?

Or better yet, set up something on their side to detect and police people's accounts if they do?

The simple fact is, you cannot rely on a lack of NAT to protect you.

Simply hooking my laptop up to the internet at all gets Dropbox, MobileMe and many other services that are part of my machine running.

How easy would it be for AT&T to isolate certain aspects of the Windows & Mac operating systems that perform certain operations when they connect to the internet, and use that to recognize people who are sharing their internet connection with a laptop?

Stop all this silliness.

If you want to use it, use it, but don't assume AT&T can't find out who each and every person is that downloads and uses this application.
Do you understand the concept of a proxy?
