Actually, Apple probably need a second camera assembly on the long edge so people look like they are looking at the recipient of a FaceTime Call when it's in landscape profile - such as when mounted on a Magic Keyboard.
Yes that’s exactly what I said, except I don’t think they need a 2nd one, just move the current one

Hehe, yeah - my aging Air 2 is really slow. Can't wait for this puppy to show up.

It is a fix if its slightly thicker. Even if just a little its still better than nothing (like 2020) :)

We do not know of a fix. We do know that you made it three years without iPad purchase.

Well, of course because the balance between weight, battery life etc. is very tricky and everyone has a different level of tolerance.

It also depends on how you use the device. If you are a person that has it on a table then you don't care about weight but if you do surveys or maybe you hold the device predominantly in hand most of the time then you will care.

So yeah, 0.5mm will probably not make much difference (the weight of the frame will increase by about 8%) but if you add bigger battery then the weight might creep in.

You see, for me (for example) - I prefer lighter device so battery life is not as crucial to me as I'm always around a charger but then someone can come in who uses the iPad on the go and that person might care a lot about battery.

Its not about complaining, its about preferences and needs. There is no such thing as perfect device because people are different.

Somebody will complain - some people can never be happy. You could add ¼mm in thickness to double the battery life and some would complain...

I was one of the people who always wanted a thicker device for more battery or specs, but seeing the new AIR 4 compared to AIR 2 ... AIR2 could do it all, I see no advantage for the bigger or thicker device here. This will add more fat, but hey, if you are PRO user i guess it doesn't matter.

The reason you don’t get good black on an LCD panel has a lot to do with the fact that you are sidelighting, and you can’t stop the light from going to black pixels. With miniLED, you get much deeper blacks. The dynamic range should be nearly as good as OLED. The problem, though, is that miniLED doesn’t have one LED per pixel, so you can get coronas around shapes where the LEDs aren’t as granular as the pattern between black and non-black.

Watching the event and just came back to say what they're doing with the new display is actually quite impressive. 10,000 mini LEDs for the backlight in a 12.9 display seems crazy.

Not as crazy as the 3.57 million individual points of light on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I guess I'll wait for the 11" iPad Air with OLED in 2022. It will get 5G, and hopefully it will get Face ID, but I'm not optimistic for the latter.

That is true, and with likely future microLED displays (if / when they ever come). I just didn't realize that mini LED was going to consist of that many LEDs / zones.

Though when they spoke about black levels, contrast ratio, etc for watching TV/movies, I just kept thinking to myself 'at the end of the day I'm going to be doing this on my OLED television'.

I have the 2018 12.9" Pro, and it still feels incredible when I hold it. But there is some temptation to the 2021 as a package - new front camera, M1, display, thunderbolt port. But truly not necessary. I think it'll be more interesting to see what comes at WWDC to take advantage of this hardware.

I hope this is sarcasm. People use “revolutionary” way too much. The original iPhone was revolutionary. Pretty much every mobile device since, is not.

I very much hope that there is something new in this lineup besides mini-led for one model. If not I’ll give Apple a pass because innovation is hard during a pandemic. But it will be disappointing.

Do you still think it was disappointing?

This is the biggest update to iPad since the first iPad IMO.

Desktop class performance.
16GB RAM.
2TB storage.
Unrivalled connectivity options.
TRU thunderbolt support.

Once the software catches up, iPad Pro will be the ultimate app development tool, creativity and productivity device. It will be the best environment to run Adobe Creative Cloud Apps.

I disagree. The biggest change since the first iPad was the Retina screen. The second biggest was the addition of the Smart Connector. The third biggest was the iPad Air 2 with laminated display, a much faster SoC, and a big boost in RAM. The fourth biggest was the 2018 iPad Pro and Face ID (or maybe that is third). I guess this update makes the top 5.

Slightly heavier, but not by much. They’re not adding a half millimeter layer of solid aluminum, they’re just making more room inside. The distance between the inner edge and outer edge of the casing will likely stay the same.
Turns out the thickness increased by ~8.5% and the weight increased by ~6.4% (.09 lbs). A tenth of a pound doesn’t sound like much but I have a feeling it will be noticeable.

Unless someone has fingers like calipers, I highly doubt anyone, even pinching them side by side (held in someone else’s hands) that anyone could correctly guess much greater than random chance.

41 grams is a bit over 8 nickels. I’m going to put 8 nickels on my current iPad Pro to see if I notice a difference. Something tells me I SHOULD be able to, but on top of the other weight that’s already there, still may be difficult. Most folks can clearly tell a definite difference in changes that are greater than 20%. The further below 20% you go, the less likely it’s noticed.

Saw the latest bend test and I am pleased to see that it does look more rigid. Very happy that I decided to wait and not get the previous versions. The deal I got with M1, MiniLED and better structure was definitely worth it.

Shame Apple didn't use stronger aluminium but at least its good to see that its a bit better. Gives me more peace of mind :)

I was wondering what took so long to see them. I figured folks would be all about doing them the day after release! Glad you can feel better about the purchase :)

Yeah, me too. I will still baby it but its good to know that its improved even if just a little bit.
Any improvement is good improvement :)

Now I just have to find a good slim case :)
