I am going to be sad if the 11 inch doesn't get the mini-LED treatment. How clunky is the 12.9 inch pro to carry around in one hand while watching something on it? Or spinning all over while drawing, either on lap, or on a desk? I currently have an air on which all of this is very doable.

To be properly viable as an HDR monitor...

1. iPad Pro displays need to be user-calibratable (via X-Rite, DataColor, Calman, etc.) and...
2. iOS needs a Monitor Display user Preference Pane to be able to accept those user calibrations.

My hope here for Apple-silicon iPad, iMac and Macbook Pro is that they all share the same HDR-capable (and, hopefully, 1000-nit) displays. As an HDR shooter and FCPX-/iMovie-user it would be nice to be able to create, edit and export HDR content with the convenience and simplicity of a dual device system...camera + computing device. Such already exists today in limited fashion with iPhone + Dolby Vision.

The world of HDR production is a standards mess today and Apple are in the unique position that, by their combination of OS + devices + production software along with the sheer volume of their global user base (both professional and consumer), they have the ability to help move, push and prod the world towards a set of global standards for HDR content creation and consumption.

Let's see what their Mini-LED panels can do.

iPads, as well as iPhones, have always been "Apple-silicon".

Thicker, not many care, but what if it's heavier, just for mini-led, without any battery increase or thicker (and therefore more rigid) case?
Which would be a shame since OLED actually allows for thinner and lighter devices (the Tab S7+ is thinner and proportionally lighter than the Tab S7, because OLED does not need back-lighting....)

Is the new 12.9 going to have more PPI? Wouldn’t mind higher resolution for video. Otherwise if it’s just backlight improvements I’ll stick with my ‘20 12.9 despite the pencil making noise against the screen. Still fighting Apple on that issue. Otherwise like the setup. Will watch the launch tomorrow and see if there is anything to get excited about.

I can't wait to get my hands on the new 12.9 inch iPad Pro. It is going to be a revolutionary device with an unbelievable emblematize.

I hope this is sarcasm. People use “revolutionary” way too much. The original iPhone was revolutionary. Pretty much every mobile device since, is not.

I very much hope that there is something new in this lineup besides mini-led for one model. If not I’ll give Apple a pass because innovation is hard during a pandemic. But it will be disappointing.

The upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Pro will be thicker than the previous-generation version, likely due to the inclusion of the mini-LED display. We've heard several rumors about the change in thickness, and now leaked design images have confirmed it.

A source that designs accessories for Apple devices sent MacRumors a series of photos that feature exact dimensions for the new iPad Pro models, and while we can't share the images themselves, we can share the leaked measurements, which are in line with measurements shared by Mac Otakara in February.

The 12.9-inch model will measure in at 280.65mm long (11.04 inches), 215mm wide (8.46 inches) and 6.4mm thick (0.25 inches). With the exception of the thickness, those dimensions are about the same as the dimensions of the current iPad Pro, and that matches up with rumors we've heard suggesting that there will be few design changes to the device.

6.4mm is 0.5mm thicker than the thickness of the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which is 5.9mm thick. The change in thickness may be due to the inclusion of the mini-LED display, a feature that will be unique to the 12.9-inch model.

Prior rumors have indicated the camera lenses of the new iPad Pro models will protrude less, and there will be some small changes to the size of the camera bump. The design drawings suggest the camera bump will measure in at 27.67mm by 27.67mm, slightly larger than the prior 27mm x 27mm camera bump.

As for the 11-inch iPad Pro, the dimensions will remain largely the same, including the thickness. It will measure in at 247.6mm (9.74 inches) by 178.5mm (7.02 inches) by 5.9mm (0.23 inches).

There could, however, be more drastic changes to the camera bump size than on the 12.9-inch model. The current 11-inch iPad Pro has a camera bump that measures in at 26.7mm by 26.7mm, but the new version's camera bump may be smaller at 25.3mm by 25.3mm.

These design drawings were provided by a source that MacRumors has not worked with in the past, but the information we've received lines up with what we've heard from prior rumors. We can't verify the information with complete confidence, but it's likely that the details shared with us are accurate.

Aside from these minor design changes and the introduction of a mini-LED display for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the new models could feature Thunderbolt connectivity and faster A14X chips on par with the M1 chips in the current Mac lineup. Apple will announce the new iPad Pro models at tomorrow's "Spring Loaded" event.

We could also see the debut of the long-awaited AirTags, and there could also be other new low-cost iPad and iPad mini models in the works, plus there's a chance Apple will introduce updated iMacs. We have a full list of what to expect in our April Event Guide.

I wish apple would do something more creative rather than another iPad. I feel like this product is overly dead. They need to put a lot more focus on the Mac. God knows they need a Mac win.

The Mac is not the future. It has its place, which is to create apps for the other 99% of the Apple user base, but it's clear that Apple's emphasis is on mobile and wearables, which have a much larger addressable market. As such, the attention it receives is pretty much in line with the role it plays in the greater scheme of things at Apple.

I'm actually very happy about this. Bigger thickness => better rigidity and less prone to bending. 0.5mm might not be much but the improvement will certainly make a difference. The bending issue was the reason why I didn't buy in 2018 and now looking at the rumoured specs etc. it seems that I made the right call. Will get awesome device with better rigidity and much better screen. Patience seems to paid off. Tomorrow will be interesting :)

In fairness waiting for three years will often times result in a computer with better specs.
Wether or not your device three years ago would have bent - stories are getting rare about it - is speculation of course and you’d have had a warranty and what not just in case.

Anyway an interesting day ahead.

Yeah, but by waiting for a fix I subsequently made my position better. :)

I might upgrade just for the mini-leds. Let’s just wait and see how bright these screens can get. I don’t really care too much about speed improvements. The current gen iPad Pros are fast enough for my needs. But the screen. It is always the screen for me.

That extra-thickness bordered me so much (I know 😅) that I went and looked at other models to compare:

Expected iPad Pro 2021 is 6.4mm
Current iPad Pros are 5.9mm
Current iPad is 7.5mm
Current iPad Air is 6.1mm
iPad Air 3/iPad Pro 10.5 is 6.1mm (but rounded edges so actually feels slimmer)
iPad Pro (gen2) 12.9 is 6.8mm (but rounded edges so actually feels slimmer)

I think the new model will feel similar to the old 12,9 considering flat edges... where is Jony? 😢

PS: note that the move from butterfly to magic keyboard on 13" mbp led to a change from 14.9mm to 15.6mm in thickness (which was noticeable in term of proportions 'feel' and only ~5% increase, compared to the ~10% expected increase here)

not me mate. my battery has never run out on me, but I use mine for content creation and not consuming [much]. I also use it everyday.
but this news of a thicker ipad for the 12"pro doesnt bother me at all, as I will be just using it on the desk from now on. as my sidekick device to my computer.
I will get the air or 11 pro as my more portable option [or the mini if all the rumours are wrong and it gets the pro look].

My future is most likely desktop + 12"ipad pro and mobile 14"MBP with 11".
As content creation apps gets more advanced, specially if you do 3D Rendering and photo editing, you'll notice that more battery is better. In my case, I do a lot of things with my iPad, either while working at home or on the field.
It ranges from programming or managing a network, to helping a user, to make music, edit/restore photos, etc.
The battery on my iPad lasts a reasonable time, but sometimes when I'm on the field, it may run out sooner.
Good thing I usually carry a 12" MacBook too. And a 25 Amp Battery to charge any device in need.

0.5mm is negligible.
It depends on whom you ask :)

that being said, we are talking about the increase in size (the negative aspect) without knowing exactly the benefits. I am sure the trade-off was deemed worth it!

It’s 0.0197 thousandths. It’s not a common fraction but it works out to 1/50th of an inch. People don’t have measuring devices around that measure items that small, unless they have micrometers or calipers. And not cheap versions of those. Tape measures are usually in 32nds of an inch at their smallest scale. 1/32 is 0.03125 thousandths. You set 2 items on a flat table you could probably juuuuust see and feel the difference of 1/32. I bet most people couldn’t feel or see a 0.0197 difference.
