How perceptible is .5mm?
Probably not much off the bat if you don’t use a case but if you do use a case you’ll notice it (and if it adds weight you’ll notice that too). But for almost anyone they will get used to it pretty quick. It’s not a big deal.

I’m more interested about any improvement in sound quality from the built-in speakers. That increase in size albeit slight is still more chambering area for the speakers to use so maybe a modest increase in bass - maybe.

Well, more than the very limited support now.

Well, more than the very limited support now.

The iPad Pro can already output video via USB-C.

So not being able to use external monitors properly is iPadOS limitation.

Unless by proper, you mean daisy-chaining monitor. In which case, it's still going to be limited by iPadOS.

I'm pretty sure the current devices would still be classified as backlit, in that the lighting is coming from behind the LCD. The backlight itself is an edge lit diffuser panel-- so the LEDs are arranged along the side of the diffuser, and the diffuser redirects the light up through the panel.

I still haven't seen a reason to upgrade my 2018 11". 2020 was lame. 2021 is lame too. Seems Apple has given up on it.

Next one will be Air 5 in a year or two. Apple's lo$$. Not mine.

That is also true (the mechanics of it), but I don’t know if that’s classified as “backlit.” Semantics, I supposed. In any event, the light hits even the “off” pixels.

I think it’d be fun if the new iPad Pro (A14x/z) could switch to desktop mode (MacOS 11) when paired with the Magic Keyboard. Not forced, just optional. Probably not likely, but fun to think about.

5am New Zealand time tomorrow I’ll be tuning in and ordering a new 12.9 iPad Pro as soon as the store allows me which better be right away after the announcement or I’ll be very unhappy.... been hanging out for this since January this year... I really hope there isn’t a significant price increase that would really annoy me...

It’ll probably go on sale Friday morning shipping the next week in limited quantities.

If/when Apple does port Xcode to iPad, I have to wonder what that would mean for Macs? Aren't iPads & iPhones a bigger portion of their hardware revenues?

Gotta wonder how much thinner iPads can really get? iPads & MacBook Airs are so thin, people can fairly easily put a piece of paper on top of them and not be able to tell they were there (yes, I've had this happen to coworkers).

Last time I did checking up on it, with OLED, no cover glass, smaller battery, it is possible to go 4mm. ( You can do certain thing to make it more rigid, so that is not an issue, at the expense of battery space)

Although I dont like the idea getting impossibly thin. Personally I think iPad Pro 5.9mm was about right, just a tad thinner and add cross point inside the body to enhance body structure would be good enough.

My 2018 11” iPad Pro is still kicking butt. Even if i was thinking of upgrading, if the 2021 11” iPad Pro is not going to get the mini LED screen like the 12.9” ipad pro...then i wouldn’t upgrade anyway. I think that is a strange move by Apple That will hurt 11” iPad Pro sales. If you are paying up for the pro ipad, it really should have the best new features.

i also hope that Apple finally releases an iPad Pro version of Final cut!

And lastly, i hope Apple releases a flat edged version of the iPad Mini so you can use the apple pencil 2 with it. as an artist, sometimes i want to travel lighter and leave my 11” ipad pro at home...and the ipad mini would be perfect for a small sketchbook. I know the current ipad mini 5 can use the first gen apple pencil, but i don’t want to have two apple pencils.

anyway....thats my rant.

I still think not including the mini LED on the 11” iPad Pro is a HUGE mistake. The whole point is for people to pay UP for the Pro iPads! The 11” is going to lose sales because the perception is why pay over $1,000 for the 11” ipad pro when i can get a regular ipad. I really hope this rumor is wrong.
Because the 11" iPP Pro will have Promotion, FaceID, quad-speakers, a significantly faster SoC, and knock on wood 8GB RAM (vs 4GB on the iPad Air). To me, that's worth the extra $200.

I wonder if that's why Apple are also rumoured to be relating an updated Magic Keyboard (even tho it was only introduced last year). Maybe the new 12.9" iPad Pro won't work with the old one.

Curious what the new and "improved" asking price will be but I am not really in the market. I have yet to see an App that really leverages the "Pro" of an iPad Pro. Everything seems to run just as great on the iPad Air 4 and I have not tried the camera on my iPad since the iPad 2 days :D

Just make it run MacOS, then I'm sold. The hardware is about the same now so that shouldn't be a big deal. Form factor shouldn't be an issue either as we've had the 10 inch air in the past.
