Damn, the 2018/2020 are just stunning devices to hold. 0.5mm increase won’t be much, but hopefully it doesn’t add the the weight by much.

Really curious to see how they play up this miniLED backlighting and how it really compares to the current LED backlighting in the iPad Pro. I’m a sucker for display improvements but for some reason this hasn’t really piqued my interest.
Since it’ll have Thunderbolt, maybe that’ll make it a nice lil’ monitor :)

I really hope we get some microLED devices tomorrow

would love to set my eyes on the new display tech

I couldn’t really care less about the thickness by itself, but I do care about the (usually) proportional relationship between thickness and weight. I don’t want the 12.9” iPad Pro to get any heavier, and I would infer from the thickness increase that it likely will. It’s already right at the threshold of a comfortable, wieldy weight.

I was totally onboard with upgrading my 2018 12.9, but it still feels really fast, and it’s mostly a note taking, web browsing, YouTube machine. I don’t do anything to tax it, and iPadOS certainly doesn’t seem to tax it yet either. It will be interesting to see what the MiniLED display looks like, however. It sounds like design language will be the same, which isn’t a bad thing, so it may still be compatible with the Magic Keyboard. The other thing I’m curious about is a new generation Apple Pencil. the Apple Pencil 2 is so good, it’s hard to imagine where they could improve upon it.

Of course it will make it sturdier. Its basic physics

It probably won't be much but it will be sturdier

The actual casing will very likely be just as thin. This basically creates a slightly larger void in the middle for stuff to go in, but one half of one millimeter won’t make it any more sturdy. Could make it less so for the cellular devices which have those non-aluminum spots for the antennas.

Why would you be upgrading when you have 2018? Makes zero sense apart from lust.

Slightly heavier, but not by much. They’re not adding a half millimeter layer of solid aluminum, they’re just making more room inside. The distance between the inner edge and outer edge of the casing will likely stay the same.

Oh no. Not 0.5 mm. I´d have to move my Book Shelf section over to the other far end of the living room to accomadate such an extravagance... ;/

Well there are people who are complaining about the increase in thickness here in this thread. It probably is warming the cockles of Jonny Ivy’s heart. 0.5 mm is .019685 thousandths, or about the thickness of 5 sheets of paper.

Basic physics says that .5 millimeters will add an infinitesimal amount of sturdiness. Such that, when measured, there will be no human perceptible practical difference between when the prior Pro bends and when this Pro bends. Of course, we know no one will run those tests :D

0.5mm is basically 8.5% thicker which is substantial.
Any improvement is better than nothing and 8.5% is by far better than 0% last year so there

The one thing that would make me buy the new iPad instantly is if it had virtualization support, and the ability to run macOS in a VM...That plus higher RAM options.

Being able to run MacOS for Xcode and terminal and anything the iPad can't handle would be amazing.

As it stands a better screen is not going to set this apart from 2018/2020 iPad Pro's IMO.

I mean you’re not wrong, but maybe there are 2018 iPad Pro users who need to upgrade because of possible performance constraints like the 4GB of RAM on most 2018 models. Each of us has our own reasons for why we upgrade. May or may not make sense to you.

So the new mini-led screen is only going to the longer 12.9” iPad, and no one cares that it’s thicker?

I guess length is indeed more important than girth...

The sheer volume of “thicker” talk associated with Apple is just so bizarre. Curious what Ive makes of all this “thinker” scuttlebutt. Kind of fun...
