I would love to know how the European sales of rMB are with price starting at €1449. When I see people talking about it as "budget laptop" I immediately want to have their budget.
I'm also wondering how many of those they sell here in Europe, as the price is insane. The base model costs 1539€ here.

my 2011 Quad core i7 MBP scores 2265 and 8103 in Geek Bench 3 on the Intel 3000.... This seems kinda slow for the pricing... or is it just me? Have i missed something?

The current gen Skylake Core M doesn't support DDR4, so direct that complaint to Intel.

http://ark.intel.com/compare/88198,88202

It's kind of a crappy move by Apple though, to start the base config with the m3 now. The m3 and m5 cost the same from Intel.

They certainly don't *actually* cost the same, ARK pricing is complete BS. It's like MSRP.

Also last years MacBook started with the equivalent CPU part. They didn't have m3, m5, m7 nomenclature last year, they were all just M.

Maybe they are trying to make the first Macbook last a bit longer, good for current owners (including myself).
USB-C is USB 3 only and no thunderbolt yet, that came at a surprise. Other than that, I've been fine with the 1 port so far...

I got the Macbook to replace the iPad a year ago, seeing the iPad will never get to what a full OS can do without multiple apps and quirky workflows, I gave up on iPad. iPads are glorified web browsing/ simple gaming, and book reading tool, nothing more, nothing less. And seems to me it will stay that way after the iPad Pro came out, just a faster/ bigger iPad, which is a bigger iPhone in some way.

Seriously contemplating selling my Macbook 12" now to get a Thinkpad x1 carbon or yoga (to replace the portable Macbook) and keep my Macbook Pro 15 as main machine. The Macbook 12" is nice, I liked it, but after a while, the arrow keys are driving me nuts. Things are getting fun at the Microsoft camp and Ubuntu is growing on me, decisions, decisions...

It's a budget laptop minus the saving money part.

Once the new tech inside becomes more common and the R&D gets paid for, I could easily see this laptop going down to $7-900 range. Will take a few more generations though...

And just behind the 2.4ghz i5 late 2013 13" rMBP that's still my daily driver.

I get that this is light and all, but the CPU and GPU performance remains massively underwhelming.

Maybe that's fine for some, I dunno. I wouldn't step back in power from a 3 year old laptop that was only mid/high end in 2013.

This chip uses <5 W power and the laptop has no moving parts! Also, as has been pointed out many times on these boards, CPU performance is not really increasing the way it used to so for the MacBook to draw level with the MBA only one year into existance is a massive achievement. Realistically, you shouldn't be using a Mac to game and people who do a lot of video encoding will likely need a quad core. For this laptop to just about keep up with your late '13 rMBP to me more says that it has enough power for the casual users who would previously have picked up an MBA. Now the only issue is the price (any maybe the single port, but I think that is something a lot of people would care about in practice even if it put them off before buying).

The hate on these machines is a little crazy.

These things, in their current state, are the original MacBook Air. They're in a sort of "testing the waters" phase. Odds are, if the this machine isn't enough for you, you were never the target. That's fine. I don't get annoyed when BMW releases a motorcycle that won't haul a trailer. I use trucks for that sort of thing.

For better or for worse this machine is still something of an experiment and it's aimed at the Starbucks crowd—the type of people that will drop $7 a day on a latte are the same people that will "overpay" for a computer. The fact that they currently come in multiple colors makes the target audience clear. (With that said, I want a space grey MBP.)

When the machine was released, Apple made it perfectly clear that it was meant to be primarily wireless in terms of connectors. It was in the keynote for crying out loud. I don't know that you're ever going to get another port. (And I don't know that it matters to the people who are actually using these machines.)

No, the machine isn't powerful. However, it's got no fans and no moving parts. That feature interests some people (me included).

Given the way my mom uses her 2010 13" MacBook Pro, this machine would be a perfect upgrade. Smaller. Lighter. Faster. MUCH improved screen. It'd be a perfect machine for my wife who is using a 2012 13" MacBook Air. Both of them basically work on their machines purely as a laptop and connect to nothing. They are not alone. Tons of people plug in next to nothing. They don't have 20 monitors. They don't have a desk full of USB devices. They don't have an old Firewire device to connect to. They don't care about ethernet because they have WiFi. (Although I have yet to meet anyone who enjoys that awful keyboard.)

I do. I have a MacBook Pro and a Thunderbolt Dock. Imagine that? Using the device designed for someone like me, a "Pro" if you will, yields better results.

The machine is a big battery, a nice screen, and a tiny logic board. What are you expecting?

Hah, even those refurb prices are too high. I hope they don't ruin the MBP with the redesign this summer.

Is...this considered a meaningful upgrade? Serious question.
For a major upgrade, Apple would announce it in a 3 1/2 hour keynote address a few weeks ago with special guest artist Taylor Swift, and rent billboards approximately the size of football fields to show how meaningful it was. They might even take their site down for a few hours to prepare for it.

If it was just a run-of-the mill spec update, they would have just added the new specs to their online store, and maybe alerted some rumor sites that the update had happened. No fanfare.

Which does this look like?

Why do I need this since I have the laptop replacement (ipad pro 9.7)?
You don't need this. Enjoy your iPad.

Yes, you've missed the point entirely. Core-M is not supposed to compete with a 45w quad core processor. How much does your MBP weigh? How often do you actually use the power of that processor in any meaningful way? If you are like the bulk of computer users, I'd wager it's less than 5% of the time, likely less than 1% of the time. Core-M is built to meet modern needs. Small, power efficient, quiet, and extremely fast in short bursts (such as loading a complex web page) which is exactly what most computer users of today need. If that is not you, or if you have a need for a computer in your life that doesn't fit that mold, no problem. There are still tons of options available for you out there, and maybe a Core-M device might fit well even for you as a mobile device.

Since Kaby Lake is such a dull update (better GPU, more hardware enciding built-in) I would expect the first chassis refresh next year. Even then I think it will be limited to a better camera (maybe), TB3/Kaby Lake and perhaps the extra USC-C port everybody wants. A more exciting development would be a price cut to $999 at the same time to really establish this thing as the new entry-level Mac.

A 480p FaceTime camera on a $1300 (that's in low end config!) laptop WTF! If it had FW3, DDR4, an extra USB-C port and a proper HD FaceTime camera (all widely available now) it would be decent value...as it is, daylight robbery! This is the Apple tax gone a step to far.

Actually, the 1.3 GHz upgrade might be worth it - the GPU has clocked faster and the CPU turbos up to 2.9 GHz in multicore mode compared to 2.0 GHz and 2.4 GHz for the 1.1 GHz and 1.2 GHz, respectively (figures from Wikipedia). That's a 500 MHz difference (or about 20%)

Yes I realize that. That price is there to help them justify what they price their Skylake Core m laptops at. I bought a Lenovo Yoga 700 with the Skylake Core m5 for $500 new. No way Lenovo paid $281 just for that processor and still sell it at $500.

BTW, that Yoga 700 is about the same size as the Macbook. It has two full size USB3, plus a full size USB2 that doubles as the charging port. It also has SD card slot, and a micro HDMI port, and a *720p* webcam :p It's a 11.6" 1080p IPS touchscreen 2-in-1, weighs just a bit more than the Macbook at 2.4lbs.

I owned last year's Macbook for couple of months. The single port and the buggy HDMI AV adapter didn't work out for me.

So I know the MacBook is super slim but if I owned one (highly unlikely) carrying those accessories around to do certain things? I'd pass.

I can vaguely remember when Apple showed the wires you needed for a Windows PC desktop then just the one you needed for iMac...

Yes. I would buy the top end. It will have a longer life. I bought the 2.0 i7 MBA in 2012. Works like a charm still. I might 'update' to MB m7 now. But i think i will wait for WWDC to see how the MBP's turn out.

When sales fall, Apple will realize they cannot get away with these sort of prices. No one in their right mind will buy this thing because they didn't buy the first one either. 14% performance gain - the IPP 12.9" is better performance than this and I don't have the baggage of OS X when I don't need it.

Stop with the pink laptop color - instead focus on adding another port, better faster ram, drop the price - basically what every one who is interested wants. OF course this is Apple - "we don't listen to no one except ourselves".

That is very false. The MacBook has been and - after this update - still is a great laptop for most people.

First let's talk about speed. The performance of the MB is perfectly fine to run applications ordinary people use, including mail, web browsing, office apps, watching movies, video chat and conferencing, etc. If you thought 2-3 years ago that a new MacBook Air was fast enough, then you will welcome that this one is just as fast, if not faster.

Regarding peripherals, yes, it would be nice to have an extra USB port, but it's not a deal breaker by any means. Most average users don't connect other than the charger to their laptop 98% of the time. And when they need to connect something, they can do it with an adapter.

Finally let's not forget, that the MB is ridiculously portable, light, thin and small, has an amazing screen, great keyboard (once you are used to it), great battery life, and no moving parts whatsoever. It is a much better computer than the MacBook Air in most aspects, just as good in a few others, and in one aspect (ports) it's not as capable.

I personally just wanted 16gb of RAM and 1 additional USB-C port...USB C is nice - I just don't like the 1 port...I always found myself needing 2, even though I have a few adapters.

I like the speed upgrade, more battery - but charge time is so quick - i'm not too stoked about the battery...

When you look at the guts of it, I think Apple has a lot of gall charging what they do; it should really go for about 40% less. Really, when you consider that it has a Retina display (who cares?), one port, and a motherboard the size of an iPhone, it's a laughable product.

40%?! I guess you don't know what you are talking about. Go take a look at the relatively small price difference Intel charges for the m vs. i5. It's priced kind of high but not 40% over. Retina who cares? The screen costs more money than an Air screen. New models always cost more to go towards the engineering to create it as well.
