So I have an Intel MacBook, personal one and have a company MacBook Pro with M1. I want to upgrade my personal machine as I currently use my work M1 MacBook for personal too as the chip is awesome. I can probs wait another year for the 3 nm chipset, but I have no idea what the 3nm offers?

I'll get the pro, but not a Pro user. Safari, emails etc, but I love all things tech. Maybe I need to research what 3nm is

I would update to m2. unless you want to use the m1 for one more year. 3m for you, I don't think will be more of a benefit than getting an m2 now. IMO

I think that Apple is keen to push out a newer model, even if it's a minor spec bump, to give it cover to increase prices.

The initial Apple Silicon macs were very keenly priced to ensure adoption, with that behind them I think Apple sees the opportunity to increase margins and take account of likely inflation.

Insert graphic here of boyfriend walking with his current girlfriend (my m1 MacBook pro) staring back at another woman, M2 MacBook.
Yeah there's always going to be that feeling of missing out once the new model is out, but honestly I'm not too concerned given CPU-wise the M2 is not that big of a boost over the M1 (I have a M1 Max with 32 GPU cores, it will last me a good while).

Apple: about to release a MBP with the M2, the most advanced laptop chip ever created in terms of power/watt
Some people: "pfft. Gonna wait for the M3" 🤷‍♂️

Bro that is such a stupid mindset. If you need a new computer get the update, don't wait for a mythical 3nm that won't make a difference in your personal life. Macs last a stupidly long amount of time, which is why I got M1 when it first came out.
No it's not. People will update when they feel that it's worth it for them. Obviously, someone will choose to buy a computer if the really need one. If they are enthusiasts, they may want to wait for drastic performance upgrades. Who cares. What does it matter to you when people upgrade their laptops?

Personally I think you're better off with an M2 MacBook Air, unless you need 16". The MacBook Air is blistering fast for your needs, and the M2 MacBook Air has better battery life than the 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro. The 13" M2 MacBook Pro has even better battery life, but it's an inferior machine in many ways IMO.

Pfftt. I already have an m3 MacBook.

Could it be a 4nm chip like the one found in the 14 pro? I probably wouldn't upgrade if the only change is a more advanced 5nm chip. But I might be tempted if it does come out in newer colors.

The 14" and 16" MacBook Pro's are the best Apple products in years. They really hit it out of the park.

Ranking of Apple products right now

1. 14" and 16" 2021 MacBook Pros
2. Apple Watch Ultra
3. iPhone 14 Pro
4. AirPods Pro 2
5. iPad Pro

The elephant in the room longer term is TSMC is struggling with effective die shrinks that will have significant performance impacts. Much like Intel's total fail on their die shrink path it begs the question of how Apple will keep the performance train moving when 3nm and such is shown to be marketing vapor and delayed or never arriving. Apple's design innovations with the Mac Studio show it's possible innovate with current chip technology without die shrink. So waiting on laptop models based on chip die shrinks for performance maybe dubious. Best short term hope may be for innovation in 3d SOC architecture if they can meet thermal and power envelope requirements for laptops.

I will stick with my current M1Pro 14" MBP until the end of time...

OR

Until the very second apple releases a 15" Macbook Air. Provided it is not artificially gimped in some way, that would be an instant buy at basically any price.

🤞 for an announcement next year.
