Isn't the pro version the Mac Studio?
IMO, no. Mac Studio is a different product that overlaps the high end Mac mini but does not replace it.

Yeh I agree, I was looking at the Air's but I want an OLED Display :'(
It's extremely unlikely the M2 Pro MacBook Pros will get OLED. Probably more like 2024, and that is if we're lucky. (And some people don't even want OLED because OLED has some disadvantages.)

According to the "YouTubers", the Macbook Airs with the M2 chip were slower because of slower SSDs, which makes you wonder about this yet released generation.

Why you would want to wait for the 3nm? Rumor has it that the M3 chip will be revolutionary as was the M1. The M3 is rumored to be a leap over the fastest machines out now as Mark Gurman has hinted at this and Rene Ritchie on several of his blogs, and podcasts.

Whether you choose to believe any of these guys or not, it makes the most sense to me to wait to upgrade my old Macbook Pro because I don't need to yet, and while the other machine will be satisfactory, who doesn't want the latest and greatest if they can?

I have a 2014 MBP. I'll be considering this one, especially if it comes in Midnight.

Or wait for the 15" macbook air!
If one needs the lowest end Mac laptop but does not like the 13.6" size I guess one could wait. But most folks waiting for an MBP need the substantial additional competence provided by the higher end MBPs - - and they will be available much sooner.

The fact that when the iphone 14 came out, I lost that enthusiasm and excitement to jump and place an order right away. I just went back to my day not caring. I think incremental bumps for 15-20% gains are not worth it for me. I'm happy with the m1 mbp 13" for now for day to day. I did jump on the mac studio ultra but returned it after due to the issues with software not entirely matching and taking adv of the hardware at the time.

Will wait for few years and see with new wifi 7 etc coming and other new changes might get implemented.

We will see minor updates for MBP and iPP with all eyes on the new Mac Pro.
Some of us consider M1 to M2 a substantive update, even if just due to the v1-->v2 improvements under the hood. Many of us using MBPs as desktop replacement boxes for more than a decade are not primarily looking at potential for cosmetic changes that seem to fascinate some other folks.

Do you mean the base 256GB not running 2x 128GB dual channel? This had nothing to do with the M2 chip itself.

So looking to get a new machine, why should people wait for 3nm? Would be good to know. Cheers bud.
I think the general consensus for buying any computer is, "if you can wait, wait. If not, don't." There is always something better coming, so waiting will always give you a better computer in the end, but you shouldn't wait if you actually have a present need.

I bought one of the last intel MacBooks (even got it refurbed) because I had to have it right as COVID was starting. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth selling/trading in for a new Apple Silicon machine, but my needs right now are just so modest...

Intel's been offering 3-5% gains at best for a decade but 15-20% is 'incremental'. 😄

When they say well into testing, what kinda well into testing are they doing at Apple? Launch Microsoft Word, reload macrumors.com in Safari? What exactly? Bench marking Final Cut Pro?

The M2 Max is going to be an odd little beast.

With the M2 Pro, Apple might increase the number of cores, somehow. That creates value.

With the M1 Max, there's already 32 GPU cores. You can't really make it any better by simply boosting the number of cores. And Apple's unlikely to boost the number of CPU cores because that would impact battery life.

So the M2 Max machine looks like it might just be a slightly faster version of the M1 Max machine. Otherwise identical.

I find myself in this category. Realistically at most requiring speedy raw photog edits/ conversions, albeit on a serious hobbiest level. As a main and only machine however, being used to 15", a smaller screen just isn't attractive. I think it makes more difference losing 1" screen real estate than gaining same. So a MBA in a 15" format, heck, throw in mini LED for my said use...perfect.

Can't wait to see performance graphs like this. As they are so insightful.

I'm not analyst, but we still didn't see Mac Pros. To me it makes much more sense that Mac Pros get 3nm at first to blow benchmarks and MacBook Pros keep 5nm for now.

No, graphics processing is inherently highly parallel, so GPUs scale very well as their core counts are increased, in contrast to many CPU workloads. Apple needs to throw as many GPU cores in these chips as possible -- I want to see them eventually be able to compete with high-end cards from nVidia and AMD.

OK I've been trying to figure out the value prop for these new models. I think this is it:

  • 10-20% speed boost over M1 Pro/M1 Max (100% possibility rating).
  • More GPU cores for M1 Pro (50% possibility rating; I've a vague feeling they might not even update the M1 Max...).
  • FaceID (75% possibility rating; I'm pretty sure Apple wanted this in the 2021 models but supply chain issues blocked it. It would've sold the notch as a useful proposition much more strongly.)
  • Dynamic Island or some kind of equivalent notification/alert system (<50% possibility rating; macOS has been delayed, and maybe this is one of the reasons why... The 14 and 16in models have the right kind of true black screens to support such a feature...)

16" 1TB M1 Pro - I'm quite sure I'm still not using a 10th of it's processing power
...and if you needed more power you could have gotten the M1 Max anyways. So for anyone deciding between the current lineup and waiting for the M2, if it's about performance you might as well get the fastest chip now and call it a day. Chances are that if the M1 Max doesn't suffice, the M2 Max won't either.

Looking forward to seeing how shafted the UK/EU prices are 😔 I jumped on a discounted base 16" MBP at £2,000, I'd hate to see how much the base 16" MBP is going to cost when it's refreshed.
Even if the prices aren't too bad, the current Macs will still be way cheaper due to being a year "old" now. The current models from some retailer running a sale vs. the latest models directly from Apple will be a big price difference. Someone who wants more performance and doesn't mind the extra cost could just buy a M1 Max Macbook now.

I think the feature we all really want to see is the MacBook Pro notch replaced with dynamic island.
We don't? If Apple wanted dynamic-island-style notifications on MacOS they could place that in the menubar on all Macs, the notch doesn't matter. Except the menu bar is tiny, so putting notifications up there where it's eye straining and sharing space with, well, the menu bar menus, is not a good idea. Not like it's a touch screen where you can pull down on it.

There is nothing in this spot of the menu bar to begin with, and if the display actually continued above the camera the space would be too tiny to be usable anyways. And don't say the menubar could be increased in size, it already takes up valuable vertical space as is (since content can never be placed where the menubar is, MacOS doesn't allow it even if the menubar is hidden).

Apple should focus on fixing things that are broken in MacOS, notifications work well, if anything I'd just like more customization for it.
