Waiting for M2 Mac Studio Max at this point! The marketing creates a mental block when the lowest machines are on M2! 😂
Given how recently the M1 Studios were released my guess is you will have a hella long wait for an M2 Mac Studio Max.

Maybe not so long, and maybe M3 instead of M2. The M1 Studios were released in March 2022. If Apple is going to be debuting the TSMC 3 nm process and M3 microarch (same generation of microarch as the recently-released A16) in spring 2023, the Studio would be a good platform for this.

The main issue is that Apple's displays cause eye strain/headaches and are unusable for me. Performance-wise I'm not a demanding user. Thehis is the first 3:2 aspect ratio on Surface Laptops is so refreshing.
Interesting that I have been using Apple laptops since the beginning and this is the first that I have heard "that Apple's displays cause eye strain/headaches..."

i dont see why apple would release another macbook pro this year they can wait till next year with the 3nm itll be more of a upgrade
The why is because many folks like me are waiting for M2 before upgrading; therefore Apple is losing sales. 5nm and 4nm chip processes should have decent yields by now, allowing better margins in a tight economy. It will probably be months before 3nm process achieves good yields. Apple can and should offer M2 MBPs now from established 5nm or 4 nm lines.

Well it’s good that you are now aware of it. There are a few of us that experience it, not enough of us for Apple to address it though. There are active threads in the MBA sub-forum.

Here are some information links on Microsoft Arm dev kit tools:

Direct link of the mMicrosoft Arm Dev kit:

Purchase link within for some reason is dead for me on mobile or laptop which makes me think either my location or stock is dead? I don’t know.

Some info of the system itself and two other systems that have arm chips but not necessarily run windows arm

Those are two different devices. The Microsoft article talks about a new one that doesn’t seem to be out. The Qualcomm one is old.

Its performance is roughly that of an iPhone 6S.

The 14" and 16" MacBook Pro's are the best Apple products in years. They really hit it out of the park.

Ranking of Apple products right now

1. 14" and 16" 2021 MacBook Pros
2. Apple Watch Ultra
3. iPhone 14 Pro
4. AirPods Pro 2
5. iPad Pro
I would go:
1. 14" and 16" 2021 MacBook Pros
2. iPad Pro

I don't have the watch or airpods so can't rate those, but it seems like iPhone 14 Pro is a buggy mess and with all the problems getting announced, there's no way it's one of their best products.

I've waited this long to upgrade from my 2014 MBP, so the thought would go "I can wait a bit longer," but this machine is REALLY showing it's age. Replacing the bloated battery for a 4th time is not something I'm excited about either.

🤞🏻 for that! 😂

Apple has always spec-bumped the MacBook Pros on an annual basis with few exceptions, the slow initial M1 rollout being one of said exceptions. This year they'll offer the 5NP M2 Pro/Max, next year they'll get the 3NM M3 Pro/Max, etc.

Gimme the M2 and M2 Pro Mac mini!!! 😵‍💫
That's what I am waiting for the most, a Mac Mini with more than 16GB RAM and more TB ports to replace my current M1 mini, and, at some point in the future, a M3 12.5in MacBook with 2 TB ports to replace my 2017 retina MacBook...

Ladies and gentlemen welcome to the new reality for Macs, where the design has been set* and won't change for a few years, so the only thing we can look forward to is incremental speed boosts from new M-series chips and yearly features added to macOS. Choose when you want to jump in when your desires and wallet are in congruence.

*except for the Mac Pro, which we should learn about shortly
I fail to see how things are any better on the Windows side, where thanks to Intel dropping the ball, the reality is that Macs now offer better battery life and sustained performance (especially when not plugged in to a power source), and in the case of desktops, a more compact form factor (the Mac Studio) that is also quieter and more power efficient.

Integrated graphics is a joke next to M1, and we have come to the point where windows laptop reviews have to just plain pretend that MacBooks don't exist anymore in order to make them seem competitive. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's cool. I saved >$1k by buying my 2016 MBP after the 2017 version came out.

The point is that we do not know what the M2 MBPs will look like, but we should wait and see at this point: additional info improves purchase decisions. There is a tiny chance that waiting one more month may mean missing some bargain, but unless it is a great >$1k bargain, odds are higher that better bargains will present after M2 MBPs are announced.
I've found some very good deals in the past by buying a recent (1-3 year old) computer instead of the very latest one.

I love new tech tech as much as the next nerd, but I have to accept that the depreciation on computers is huge, and if you can live with not having the "latest and greatest" when you acquire the machine, then you will save a ton of cash.

Many people (I suspect most) will keep an expensive item like a MacBook Pro for at least 4 or 5 years, so they already accept that they will have an "old model" for most of the lifetime of the machine. My experience with MacBooks is that they have typically depreciated to less than 50% of their purchase price within about 2 years (I only got 44% of my late-2019 MBP16 when I sold it in Jan 2022).

This means you could spend the same money by buying 2 year-old machines every two years instead of a new machine every 4 four years, and have the same machine you would have had otherwise for the second half of the 4 year period. Or you just keep it for 4 years and have a 6 year old machine at the end of that time, and then buy another 2 year-old machine at that point and save 50%.

the time to buy is after new models have been released and are readily available of course.

That said, I did buy a new M1 Max when it came out to replace my late-2019 MBP16, because the new machine was so much better than the previous Intel model. The "sensible" thing to have done would have been to have bought a discounted or used M1 MBP instead of the M1 Max, but there wasn't an equivalent previous generation to the Max, so I bit the bullet this time. I might keep my current machine for another 5 years, and maybe buy a late-2023/early-2024 M3 Max when at that time...assuming a yearly upgrade cadence.

apparently it has something to do with the aspect ratio? I didn't get it either. I'm trying to understand how the Surface displays cause less eye strain...

lower pixel density
Laptop 4 : 201 PPI
MBP: 254 PPI

Lower contrast ratio
Laptop 4 : 1365:1
MBP : SDR - 26,000:1 (in a well lit room) 50,000:1 (dark room)

Lower brightness intensity:
laptop 4: 427 nits
MBP: SDR- 500nits XDR:1000 nits sustained full-screen 1600 peak

My wallet isn’t ready, but I don’t care what my wallet thinks. Let’s go!!

I know that’s why I separated the links. Also why I specifically stated Microsoft’s dev summit purchase link was dead.

Well, you originally wrote “I pray this M2 Pro/max chips still outperform Microsoft's+Qualcomm's 3rd generation Arm chip for Windows 11 Arm featured in their Mac Mini-like dev PC !!!!”, and all I can say is: it’ll run leaps around the old dev kit, and we don’t really know anything about the new dev kit. (And yes, my money is on: it’ll outperform it. So far, shipping Qualcomm SoCs have been years behind Apple.)

Agreed, QCOM's SoCs are way behind apple, and this 3rd gen arm chip for windows will be a incremental upgrade. Qualcomm maintains there is a M series competitor coming in late 2023, which likely draws from the Nuvia team. So I'm interested to see what that is capable of. even if it doesn't bring M2 like performance, if it is close it would enable some interesting products on the PC side.

I bought one of the last intel MacBooks (even got it refurbed) because I had to have it right as COVID was starting. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth selling/trading in for a new Apple Silicon machine, but my needs right now are just so modest...
The only reason I moved to a 14" M1 Max recently was because my wife needs my March 2020 16" 8-core i9 MBP to replace her aging 2015 iMac i5, and I wanted the smaller and lighter 14" MBP.

I might have waited to make the upgrade with a new M2 Max MBP 14", which I thought won't arrive till spring 2023, as I was expecting the Mac Mini and iMac 24" to get the M2 chip next.

But according to some benchmarks I saw on YouTube, a 14" MBP can thermal throttle vs the 16" with a 32-core on longer tasks, and the M2 chips run faster and hotter. So, the 14" form factor might limit the new M2 Max chips to performing almost the same as M1 Max, where the 16" might be able to better see the benefits from an M2 Max.

So do you guys think we will or won't see a new 16" MBP this October? I need a new laptop to replace my aged Mac Pro.

But the new MBP'S no doubt will be more here in the UK than when the M1 MBP was released due to the UK governments incompetence and stupidity. So I'm thinking whether to pick up a good offer on a M1 or hold tight. Decisions decisions!
