Hmm this is a spanner in the works!

I have a mid 2012 Retina Macbook Pro. I am looking to upgrade to the next top of the line Retina Macbook Pro..

Do I get the one that might be released on Wednesday or do I wait until October? Is October even likely or would they just release a new one June 2016...not sure I want to wait until then!

Have they released new updates in October before? I thought Macbook Pro's were always at WWDC...

I'm guessing they're going to treat this as a minor spec bump, release it early so they don't have to talk it up on stage, which will give them leeway to announce a 'proper' update when the skyline stuff is ready.

This sounds spot on.

15" Macbook Pro would have been announced at Apple Watch event with the 13" had Intel had the chips ready - they didn't, so now it'll come with all the same upgrades as the 13"

I'm not sure why people on here expect radical redesigns and the like when its obvious whats going to happen - and then when its announced you'll get the influx of "i'm waiting until the next version" nonsense - then when that comes out and its redesigned you get "never buy version one of a redesign i'm waiting until the next release"

People spend more time on this boards waiting for things to come out than just buying and using them!

What?

They're not replacing i5s and i7s with Core Ms.

Just having a jab at the Macs that are being churned out lately haven't been significantly faster than their predecessor by any means, in some cases just a handful of Geekbench points - and that new Macbook we've seen with one port - yep, slower than the model it replaced.

I really want to see if the iMacs are upgraded. I'm slowly thinking about buying a new 21.5 iMac. I might look into the 27 if they are a good deal overall but I'd prefer the 21.5 to be upgraded cause that's the screen size I prefer.

It is about time for a 21.5" Retina 4K update.

That being said, I really expected Apple to pass on Broadwell for the 27" Retina iMacs and update to Skylake in the fall. I remain skeptical of this rumor.

It didn't "replace" the MacBook Air, it is a completely separate product. For now.

What model did the new rMB replace?

There is more to this than just Broadwell v Skylake. The new rMBP 15 will already be good to go with the new force touch trackpad and newer nVidia discrete graphics. They will release this model as soon as there is a cpu upgrade available which presumably is now with Broadwell. nVidia GT750 has already been used in 2 generations so they won't hold off any longer for Skylake if there is a viable alternative to pair with an updated graphics card. This pretty much guarantees that they won't be dropping discrete graphics any time soon and also explains why it was the nVidia model that had shipping dates slipping.

Well I did just buy an Retina iMac 2 weeks ago, so this confirms it

I do find it interesting that only the 15" and 27" are getting "upgraded". What about the 13" and 21.5"?

The 13" was updated at the Spring Forward event, as the Intel processors for that machine were already available. It also got Force Touch.

Hopefully this means the Intel chips Apple use for the 15" MacBook Pro are ready, and it can get Force Touch, too.

As for the 21.5" iMac, I have no idea.

Aah you got me - I thought it had taken the place of another product but it hasn't.

That said, my point about speed is still valid. The "new" 2015 MB is slower than the 2011 Air.

Macs just aren't getting much faster. I wonder when iPhone's will start overtaking desktops...

BeatsBook Pro

Perhaps they will discontinue the MacBook Pro and introduce the BeatsBook Pro, available in red or hulk green.

It's your call.

I'm upgrading as soon as these are replaced: But that is because my current computer is a 13" non-Retina model, and I'm desperate for a new machine for animation and video editing.

If you can wait, and think there will be another update in October, do.

If you can't wait, don't. But think about this: if you buy a new laptop on Wednesday (assuming this rumour is true) and Apple updates them again in 6 months - will you regret not waiting?

Only the basic, consumer level Macs like the Mac mini, new MacBook and the cheaper 21.5 iMac. Apple knows it doesn't have to be top of the spec chart with those models. Those customers just want a cheap Mac.

Pros and Prosumers will look into specs, and want faster computers. The Mac Pro is much faster than the one it replaced. I expect the MacBook Pro to be, too.

Despite having a faster SSD, GPU, and twice as much RAM

I agree, those who actually need more power should get a rMBP instead of a rMB or MacBook Air in the first place. The only flaw in your logic is that the Retina MacBook is not cheap, but that's to be expected for such a new product.
