The comments about around here about that machine make the butterfly keyboard and missing ports hate look tame.

You're referencing the wrong 2008 MBP. People here are referring to the Spring 2008, not the October 2008 model.

I was a college freshman in 2008 and got the early 2008 with a matte screen. I was SO GLAD that I had the early 2008 and not the glossy model from late 2008. Even after having a 2011 unibody MBP and a 2019 Mac Pro rack, I still feel the early 2008 MBP was my favorite.

The design is less attractive looking that its predecessor, for sure. I think the inclusion of the "feet" are what make it look a lot worse than it probably is. You couldn't see them with the previous gen.
especially as they fell off.... one at a time.... over the course of a year.

europe: "we will make it illegal not to charge with usb-c"
apple: "you'r welcome, but customer have been demanding mag-safe instead"

I know it's powerful but probably against SJ's idea. remind me of the Air he took out form a thin env... lol

If you needed to use a full-size card, you wouldn’t be able to use an adapter for a micro-size slot, right? So, are you advocating for both slot sizes?
I’m saying there will always be a port someone wants. This is why the PC laptops from the early 2000s were so bad. They added every port someone could ever want to make 5-10% of people happy and as a result 90% of people hated the computers. Apple was different. They sleek, useful computers for many and pushed people to change their old ways for the better. Today they just have into the old ways and moved Apple back 10 years.

Am I the only one here that would have traded the HDMI port for literally anything else?

One more USB-C
A single USB-A
literally anything else...

HDMI just seems like a waste of space.
All of the ports would be a waste of space if I was interested in buying one of these brick looking computers. I was hoping to until I saw the ugly design. Now I’m not and that’s fine with me.

And what alternatives will you consider?

Why are you crediting Tim Cook? Do you think he makes product-design-level decisions at Apple like Steve Jobs did? He's an operations person, not a design or usability person.
He's the CEO. The buck stops there.

Unless you're saying you've got actual insider info on how Apple is run?

Regardless, Steve Jobs's Apple rarely backpedaled ANYTHING. This guy pivots on a relative dime compared to the Steve/Jony team.

Credit here is earned.

Not very happy about the 14” being half a pound heavier. That is a lot to go from 3 lbs to 3.5 lbs. you will feel that half a pound of weight after having this in a bag all day while traveling, at a conference, trade show.

If you're buying it for looks you're not the target demographic. These are devices for working on.

Apple could make it a 3rd thicker again and I wouldn't care so long as it has the specifications I'm looking for.

Have you seen the latest full-size SD Exoress cards? They are now similar to SSDs in performance and cost hundreds of dollars. A good 500 GB card costs about $500. This is what this slot is for. You don’t have to buy a Macbiok Pro maxed out on the SSD. Get the base amount of SSD and then add more storage via the SD Express card.

Im buying Macbook Pros because i need CPU power and i need it to be portable. I work on my 16" MBP i9 and i move around several times each week. The 2019 16" is borderline PC-like with its weight. This 2021 model is next level bulky.
If you want a thick, bulky, ugly laptop with legacy ports the market is full of options already!!

How can an M1 based chip require a thicker body than my current intel frypan? Ridiculous.

I traded my 16 MBP for one main reason, the keyboard is too far forward and it made me feel like I was reaching out to type. I’d rather have a touch pad the size of the 13 so the keyboard could be moved closer to the front edge.

I haven't seen any suggestion that the SDXC slot is SD Express or even USH-ii. SD Express sounds like a great idea but they are basically not available and USH-ii cards are not commonplace and basically the same cost/capacity with CFe Type B cards.
SD Express wouldn't necessarily be a good idea as they are only backward compatible with USH-i cards ie not backward compatible with USH-ii cards.

They are terrified of the YouTubers complaining about thermal qualities so they went overboard.

I mean, it's really ugly - it's utilitarian, it looks like a 2009 MacBook Pro. But hey that's what everyone on this forum wanted from a Pro machine so I guess none of those people are complaining now.
Look at iMac, maybe retro utilitarian is not that bad…
