I have long felt that Apple don't stress test anything. They come up with a nifty animation, check to make sure it looks nice with a few dragged icons, and then consider it finished and never look at it again. Same goes for a lot of other stuff (especially in iOS). Their obsession with pushing for new features to sell the same product again every year keeps them from optimizing existing features, or fixing features that never really worked to begin with (like the multi-select modes in iOS, which, after seeing my mother's device with iOS 14 on it, seems they finally addressed after six or seven MAJOR releases).
I really don't know how Apple operates these days but they don't perform well. I mean, the software quality is not great and they can't bring in time all features they advertise months before the release. Both Monterey and iOS 15 are the most lackluster releases Apple ever made and they still can't finish them in time.

As someone who deploys a lot of iMacs into a professional environment, it's one more stupid thing we have to secure and lock down.

Nobody cares if an IEC cord gets stolen; we have boxes full of spares. If one of these gets stolen it's expensive and a pain in the ass to replace.
Thanks for that response. I hadn't considered a school lab or workplace with possible machine theft. Good point. From any other angle, though, I think external PSUs are best. At the school labs where I used to work, we still had printers/scanners, monitors and whatnot with external PSU bricks. Maybe Apple stuff is just more of a theft attractor...

We wont get rid of that until we have light-emitting pixels once again (micro-LED, if that ever gets to a point where it's feasible to manufacture at current pixel densities; and it might not). Pick your poison: a lack of ANY true blacks, or some true blacks with light bloom around the bright areas...

TVs will get it first, probably in 2 years I'd say. But how long it'll be before it's out into a 13" to 16" screen who knows. OLED gives pretty good blacks though.

Apple adds a SD card reader and yet the only SD cards I have are micro. So I still need a dongle 🤣. But hey, let’s go back to 2008 for 25% of users who ”think” it was the best because it was their first Apple computer. Time to wake up. Those days are in the past.

The notch really isn't "HIDEOUS" though is it - you've just moved your menu bar up a bit and now you've got a bigger screen, you wont' even notice it, it makes use of previously wasted space.

The rest of the machine is hideous looking but hey, functional I guess, if you want those horrible legacy ports.
It is, it's just f*** hideous. Apart from that, and the small complaint about using old tech HDMI 2.0 rather than modern 2.1 (it would be like them putting in Thunderbolt 3 instead of 4), it is a brilliant machine, and pretty much all we could realistically hope for. Unrealistically, I'd really really like user upgradeable SSD and RAM, and a single USB-A port would be nice, but I know those were never going to happen.

Personally, I'll be waiting to see if any major issues to show up and how Apple deals with them, and to see how different RAM/CPU/GPU configurations actually work in the real world (I mean, all the first reviewers were gushing that 8GP was enough for the M1, but once the real reviews came out, then that got shown to be not actually true). I presume 16GB is enough for all my use cases, but I have this unhappy feeling 32 is what I might actually want at some point, especially once VM's are ironed out fully. I guess I can just sell and upgrade down the track if I need it. For now, it would also be very nice if we could get a 16" MBP with only an M1 in it, as many of us certainly don't need a super computer, but yeah, not Apple's style. I'd be very curious to know the numbers of 14" and 16" sales with the various CPU/GPU options.

There are other humans in the world. A LOT of those humans have the need to connect to HDMI, especially for business. I can't think of anything stupider, less professional, less convenient, and more error prone than having to rely on dongle to connect to a client's display system.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t an additional TB4 port be more versatile than a dedicated HDMI port?

Wouldn’t something a USB-C to HDMI cable (no dongle) easily solve the issue for those who do need HDMI? Or what am I missing here?

What’s the advantage of the HDMI port? I’m genuinely curious. Thanks.

Nobody has every reviewed/used a machine and said, this would be great... if it weren't for those extra ports.
I mean, I haven’t used/needed anything other than USB-C in years. I’d prefer to not have them. I don’t think I’ve ever needed and SD card slot. Just me. I’d rather have a dongle for the rare time I did need them.

Note also the M1 Max version is another 0.1 pound heavier than the M1 Pro, making it almost 12% heavier than an Intel version.
Sure but its lighter than the IntelMac and external battery; not to mention the cooling deck you need to make it run at even 1/4 of the M1X's performance.

You are correct an extra TB4 port would be more versatile. But as someone who does a lot of presentations in various conference rooms it’s very nice to have a dedicated HDMI port. Something I really learned the hard way two months ago when my HDMI dongle stopped working.

I'd say the new MBPs are a rather grand leap forward.

The only downside is that they are stupidly expensive and poor value.

They operate on the goodwill they earned in past. It takes a long time to burn off a reputation and a rabid/fanatic base. They haven't demonstrated good UI design knowledge since prior to 2013, but they still have a reputation for great UI design. People get used to thinking a thing about a person or company, and forget to update their notions. A well-earned reputation can stick around even well past the time when it is no longer worthy. This new MacBook Pro gives me a slight bit of optimism, though. Time will tell.

I was expecting much worse, really. Apple have set the bar so low for cost-effectiveness expectations at this point that I'm not utterly disgusted at the pricing.

Those cards have adapter cards available that will do the trick, without a dongle.

Why no optical disk drive??
Because they have not had one for a while. There is an external superdrive if you need one. When was the last time you loaded software from an optical drive? It is just extra weight that is unneeded in a lap top these days, particularly if you are trying make it thin.

I've always been bothered with the idea that people thought MagSafe was just better. It's not. This implementation is great because it's really a best of both worlds situation... but if I had to pick one, it was USB-C all day, every day:
  • No more proprietary charger
  • No more proprietary connector
  • Allowed single plug for data and power
  • Could use ports on either side for charging
MagSafe is nice if you're plugged in at an airport or in a conference room. I get it. If you're plugged in with kids running around, also great.

The question is, when and why are you actually plugged in for these scenarios anymore? In the age of 15+ hours of battery life, why on earth are you plugged in while not at a desk for hours on end. I still don't get the pining for MagSafe. Am I the only one who works at a desk where my cables aren't easily tripped on? I have kids and dogs and all that. That's why, when I use my laptop in those scenarios, I don't plug it in. I can get through an entire work day on a full charge.

When battery life in the real world was more like 4 hours, this was really, really nice. But seriously, why do people think this is such a big deal at this point? What is the real world scenario where you need to be constantly plugged in somewhere that tripping is a high risk? I'm sure there are legit scenarios for this, but they're niche now.

Heck, I'm more likely to be in a situation where I forgot a charger than in a tripping zone. USB-C lets me borrow pretty much every modern charger from anyone else at this point.
Well luckily you can still charge regular speed on USB-C, fast-charge at a much faster rate via MagSafe, and even use the brick for your USB-C cables.

We have big dogs and I work at a table in the dining room where the dogs are regularly walking past me unplugging my 2014's MagSafe. For some reason the bull terrier who stays with use a lot unplugs my MBP even more frequently than our Weims do.

In the photos that I have seen, the notch is present when the front facing camera is being used, such as for a Zoom meeting or facetime call. When using an app not using the front facing camera, I don't see any notch in the menu bar.

Well I'll be damned. This looks like it's built for Pros needing to do work. I'm delighted as it's everything I'd hoped for. Was so sick and tired of thin thermally throttling nonsense that sounded like a hairdryer when asked to do anything resembling hard work. Can finally put my 2015 on to netflix duties.

Just happy to have a 2x faster than the trashcan. Still waiting for macminipro - the same logic board in macmini 64gb/4TB would do me fine. Dec delivery though.
