Apple today announced completely redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models that in the case of the 16-inch model is unsurprisingly thicker and heavier than the previous generation.

Apple announced a new 14-inch model that replaced the high-end Intel 13-inch MacBook Pros. Given the larger screen, it's not fair to compare the two models. What is fair game, however, is to take a look at the new 16-inch MacBook Pro compared to the previous generation. We've put side by side the weight, height, and depth differences for the new 16-inch MacBook Pro compared to the previous generation.

2021 16-inch MacBook Pro
  • Weight: 4.7 pounds (2.1 kg)
  • Height: 0.66 inches (1.68 cm)
  • Depth: 9.77 inches (24.81 cm)
  • Width: 14.01 inches (35.37 cm)

2019 16-inch MacBook Pro
  • Weight: 4.3 pounds (2.0 kg)
  • Height: 0.64 inches (1.62 cm)
  • Depth: 9.68 inches (24.59 cm)
  • Width: 14.09 inches (35.79 cm)

As you can see from above, the new 16-inch MacBook Pro is nearly 9% heavier than the previous generation and is also slightly thicker. The new MacBook Pros feature a redesigned designed body, that is not also thicker and heavier, but also includes more I/O ports and new features. Learn more about these new MacBook Pros here.

The HDMI port is brain dead. How about an optical drive? Centronics parallel port? The Magsafe3 is OK if it saves a laptop, but if they could just make a USB-C adaptor which does the same, it would be better. They could have done that. Seems like a step backwards.

Nobody has every reviewed/used a machine and said, this would be great... if it weren't for those extra ports.

I mean I plugged up the ports on my MacBook Air and wished it came with none, so there is somebody. Also there are a handful of us on here that want ports that can be and do anything - removing a 40GBps Thunderbolt 4 port that can be used for ANYTHING and replacing it with a HDMI port is regression. But I realise i'm in the minority here and as I sell Macs i'm happy to be wrong about that and make loads of money instead!

Let's be real here though. The MacBook Pro was already super thin for its power and spec. And even though this one is a little larger, it remains super thin for its power and spec. MacBook's have generally always been a little heavier than their competition due to Apple favouring aluminium over plastic, long before other manufacturers copied or moved to carbon fibre.

Can Apple not make it look like the MacBook Pro from 2008? lol
I mean....look closer. The feet are a massive difference. It's much more squared off, and the keyboard bezel/backing is black. To me this is the biggest change if not bigger then when they went from the 2012 to the Retina models.

If the iPad Pro can be small and light and not overheat, why can't these machines?

One of the promises of the Apple-designed chips was much greater efficiency, which should let them build Thinner, Lighter, and Faster at the same time....
Yeah, I think personally I’ll see if they can fix the thermal issues in the next round. I’m not a big fan of laptops that get red hot and sound like a plane taking off. This one with its two big fans seems to be a heater. We’ll see what the reviews have to say.

you can also see that the battery life is significantly cut down from the M1 macs, which is another sign these things are power hungry. Also waiting for the benchmarks comparing this to M1 macs, today they only benchmarked it with intel. I think M1 might be the one to get. It’s the dongle life for me

The bulky design puts me a bit off. I don't care about HDMI out or SD Card readers on my laptops. I was hoping for a sleeker design. Everything else looks great though.

"

And that's fine. I'm on various audio and video pro forums, and no one there was asking for a thinner sleeker MBP ( that's what the Air was for ). Everyone is crying for serious performance. And it seems Apple finally delivered just that. I think they are going to sell these by the boatload.

iPad Pro has a slightly down clocked M1 chip. The new MBPs have a lot, lot more cores.

One of the promises of the Apple-designed chips was much greater efficiency, which should let them build Thinner, Lighter, and Faster at the same time....
And they’ve delivered on that promise. From a smaller logic board, the M1 Pro and Max offers substantially better performance using less energy.

Vanilla M1 is another matter entirely.

Thicker and Heavier oh no!

About 6.4 ounces heavier and half a millimeter thicker.

Hardly noticeable in my opinion.

The weight increase is almost certainly due to bigger batteries, and the (slight) thickness increase is probably due to the HDMI port. The thickness increase is possibly why they increased the battery size.
It's 0.06 mm thicker, not half a mm.

Edit: Erm, seems like I was asleep.

Agree 100%, but we're in the minority on this forum - losing a 40GBPs Thunderbolt 4 port that can do anything for a single use HDMI port is a disaster, but Apple must have researched this and found there are more people like them, than us.
The previous models only had two TB3/USB4 ports, these have 3. Don't know what difference TB4 vs TB3 does for you? HDMI would be useful in VTC setups with projectors being used. This discussion that USB-C is all you need, just reminds one of all dongle adapters, and a hub you travel with to connect to legacy gear. SD is debatable, likely enough photography buffs that still need that.

Ugly and expensive as hell. I don't know what's going on at Apple. My first G5 was very reasonable priced, but after that they went insane mode on prices.

Best to buy a 14 inch. only difference is screen size and battery. Best of both worlds - portability and power.

Ive is having a stroke right now.

I can understand anything but the notch on a MacBook screen is too much. I will never buy a MacBook with it.
Luckily I bought the "old" 16inch and I think I'll keep it until they'll change idea on the notch.
