They basically addressed every single complaint by the power users on forums/online.

-faster than anything else in the form factor
-thicker/heavier to priortiize performance and thermals
-legacy IO (HDMI, SD) instead of USB-C so no need to buy new cables and adapters
-10bit screen, 120hz
-notch actually gives you more workspace because the menubar is pushed up inside it
-16" price is same as previous gen, despite the post-covid supply/labor shortage

Only remaining uncertainty is the usualyl buggy garbage that X.0 macOS releases are so that will be fixed overtime and of course herding all the develoeprs to make their workflows comply will take a few years

Nobody has every reviewed/used a machine and said, this would be great... if it weren't for those extra ports.

Some people prefer compactness over unnecessary ports. The new design looks like a throw back to me. Luckily Apple didn't add a CD-ROM drive. Maybe next time 😆

Reminds me of these.

With so much in the SOC, and power efficiency, I am wondering why they are still thick?
The chips are more efficient, but they also have many more cores. I imagine this means the cooling system can't be that small and the system still needs a large battery.

But really, 5 lbs?

I'm not sure....

My present Galaxy 15.6" OLED is 2.3 lbs. Half the weight. I need to consider this.

Also, the Galaxy isn't fragile. It's magnesium, and although these have a little flex, it's solid. It IS short on ports. Only two, (after the Apple craziness, no doubt)

The notch really isn't "HIDEOUS" though is it - you've just moved your menu bar up a bit and now you've got a bigger screen, you wont' even notice it, it makes use of previously wasted space.

The rest of the machine is hideous looking but hey, functional I guess, if you want those horrible legacy ports.

I can here the apologists now! But seriously, I love how Apple tried to play off how TERRIBLE that idea was by mentioning dark mode and how the menu bar will hide it. I'll get over it, but only because I have to ... and I'll have ports and slots once again.

I feel like this is a very regressive design, adding a hdmi port, proprietary power, and sd card slot? Jesus, talk about backwards. USBc was all about universal ability. don't need cdmi? fine you don't have a wasted port, you can use it for something else. SD cards are on the way out too. Don't get me started on MagSafe return, they didn't even use the superior L-Plug they updated to.
Be grateful they didn't add the Superdrive! O my gosh.
We will never see progression if we stick to the old.

I don't mind, but with the M1 chips being more efficient I was expecting a thin design thanks to the better thermals.

The weight difference is significant. The addition of two hundredths of an inch in height is not.

I think it's pretty mute. You can always create a desktop background with the top 74 pixels black if it bothers you that much. Below it you still have a 16:10 display. I prefer it, as it's like they've tucked up the menu bar away from where I'm working.

I don’t mind the notch too much. Remember you’re getting a pretty huge resolution. And as for weight, I’m assuming it’s because of the battery. More battery the better in my opinion.

I'm loving the feet on the bottom -- that means it will have a far easier time staying cool without turning on the fans, and when it does need to turn on the fans the access to colder air will mean they can cool more without being louder / on longer. Win win.

Didn't care about the MagSafe connector or the hdmi port, until I learned that there's one less thunderbolt port 😫. I'm using all 4, with 0 need for either the MagSafe nor the hdmi (my monitor charges the computer). I'm actually loosing connectivity options here.
