Agree 100%, but we're in the minority on this forum - losing a 40GBPs Thunderbolt 4 port that can do anything for a single use HDMI port is a disaster, but Apple must have researched this and found there are more people like them, than us.

It's a shame ports aren't module - it would increase the SKU's ten fold, but imagine just being able to pick 4 Thunderbolt 4 ports on both sides and a couple of extra USB-C ports on each side - that'd be perfect expansion.
Since they're no longer forcing you to charge through the Thunderbolt port, this is like a free port that wasn't there before. I wasn't aware the prior models had four, though, so if there's one less port... it's negligible with the MagSafe charging connector put back.

Am I the only one here that would have traded the HDMI port for literally anything else?

One more USB-C
A single USB-A
literally anything else...

HDMI just seems like a waste of space.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Tim was getting bombarded with people asking for ports, including HDMI. Not as many tweets and emails praising the decision to go all in on Thunderbolt. I like the SD card slot, but I agree that HDMI should have just been another Thunderbolt port (which can do HDMI just fine with a thunderbolt to HDMI cable).

If the iPad Pro can be small and light and not overheat, why can't these machines?

One of the promises of the Apple-designed chips was much greater efficiency, which should let them build Thinner, Lighter, and Faster at the same time....
The iPad Pro will thermally throttle at a FAR SOONER point than these new laptops.

All the MacBook Pros since 2016 had perfectly symetrical dual Thunderbolt ports on both sides - I don't think removing a 40gbps TB4 port which can do anything and replacing it with a single charging port and HDMI is par for course really - if they'd left all the TB ports and added legacy back I wouldn't have minded as much.

It's clear the Magsafe, HDMI and SD card are all using a the 4th bus lane that would have been used for a Thunderbolt connector.

Where’s the button on the front to release the display?

If they were going to go retro, I actually prefer the look of my old PowerBook Ti.
I immeaditely thought of the PowerBook Ti as well!

I wonder if Apple is going to stick with this design for an entire generation, or if they plan on refining year over year.

Love the specs, but it’s hard to give up the aesthetic of the 2012 MBP

??? The only way you can see them is if your eyes are at table height! It needs more clearance for heat dissipation, as well.
I’m aware. But compare the marketing images of the previous generation to this newer one. That’s all I can go by as of now.

I’m sure it’ll be a non-issue in real world use, but those images certainly make this machine look less sleek than before.

Big powerful laptops, with batteries that last all day.

If you need a lightweight machine, that's why they make the Air.
But the previous 16" had the same size battery, with chips that draw more power and it still managed to be more svelte? How did they even manage that 🤨 For the most part it doesn't bother me but it is a bit odd.

If you need a powerful machine with a battery that last all day, buy a desktop. It will be cheaper, more powerful, has a bigger screen and never needs to be charged.

Not for people who work, it doesn’t. Every conference room has an HDMI cable.

Cables can be replaced easily, my conference room has DP and HDMI cables with female to male converters for HDMI, DP, mDP, etc.

I mean a cable is what? 10 bucks top. You buy it once, and it's a permanent fixture.

I feel like this is a very regressive design, adding a hdmi port, proprietary power, and sd card slot? Jesus, talk about backwards. USBc was all about universal ability. don't need cdmi? fine you don't have a wasted port, you can use it for something else. SD cards are on the way out too. Don't get me started on MagSafe return, they didn't even use the superior L-Plug they updated to.

This is so far from the truth.

HDMI ports are still used to this day, and will continue with HDMI 2.1. Magsafe is immensely better than using USBC and SD CARD Slot, the camera in your signature uses an sd card lol, so does my leica.

The headphone jack without having to use a DAC, insane. Apple thought of it all when designing this macbook pro.

I also prefer the 2012-2019 aesthetic, but I think I could get used to the new one if they just dropped the weird black keyboard recess. I don't have to look at a chubby profile or weird feet all the time, but I will be looking at the keyboard deck a lot!

What the hell are you buying then? I've got more USB-C cables than i've got ports to plug them into - also ANY devices that supports USB-A can support USB-C on the other end so in terms of plugging them into a laptop there was NEVER any issue even 5 years ago, let alone now. Embrace the superior connector!

I'm guessing you haven't done any of that using a dongle. My son uses his MacBook Pro for studio recording, he needs to hook up 3 USB-A devices, and when you have 3 USB-A's connected to a dongle, it puts a LOT of leveraged stress on that tiny USB-C port. That's without moving the laptop, just plugging those cables and draping them carefully across the able puts a ton of leveraged stress on the USB-C port.

Of course, it's a laptop, so it's supposed to be movable, and it actually needs to be movable when you are recording, but you can't move it at all because there is already a ton of stress from 3 USB-A cable with a couple of inches of leverage.

With his prior Macbook Pro (model just before the 2016 version), he could plug everything in and move it around without any concern whatsoever ever about stress on the USB-A port.

The new version sucks to work with, and the old version was great. Your mileage may vary, but that doesn't help our mileage.

USB-C is a "superior connector" functionally, there is now question about that. Physically, however, it is insufficient for leveraged force from a dongle. I'm surprised the USB-C ports still work on his MacBook, the USB-C cables feel loose now when you plug them in.
