Didn't care about the MagSafe connector or the hdmi port, until I learned that there's one less thunderbolt port 😫. I'm using all 4, with 0 need for either the MagSafe nor the hdmi (my monitor charges the computer). I'm actually loosing connectivity options here.
Ah, your display charges the machine, so you're not losing a port to just a charger. I see. Thanks for that use scenario. I hadn't thought of that.

It's a Pro computer, for Pro's who value performance, battery life, ports, etc.

If you need thin and light Apple has you covered with the Air.

I’ll give you that, we await proper tests but no doubt in its target applications these new machines will smoke. Not sure about the mini led screen though given the blooming effects in the iPad Pro 12.9” with that tech.

This new model looks quite a bit thicker than even my Late 2013 Macbook Pro.

But it isn't. It's thinner. They just aren't hiding the thickness with a taper to a thin edge.

There are many people, myself included, who were sick of Apple going thin for the sake of thin. Meanwhile the machine would throttle because it was too thin.
Same here. If I want a thin notebook, I can get a Macbook Air. If I want power and versatility, I can get a Macbook Pro.

They should have never tried to "Air-ize" the MBP. The nice thing is with the M1 CPU now Macbook Airs have decent performance so are a great option for more people who want a thin lightweight laptop.

Same deal on the desktop side. I hope the successor to the 27" iMac is more pro-oriented, with more ports than the 24" version they just released and no power brick.

The notch takes away space that I need for big menus and statusbar icons...
Can you show a screen capture of how this will affect you? I have a few menubar status icons but not that many. Which apps have so many menus that they will be affected?

I’m aware. But compare the marketing images of the previous generation to this newer one. That’s all I can go by as of now.

I’m sure it’ll be a non-issue in real world use, but those images certainly make this machine look less sleek than before.
The "svelte" profile of the last-generation machines was an illusion they created with the tapered top and bottom shells.

The new 14" machine is actually 0.01 mm thinner than the old 13" machine. Those tapered edges gave it the illusion of being thinner, but what it did do was reduce the interior volume, forcing them to use weirdly shaped and stacked batteries, and waste space inside the case. The "rounded slab" design of the new machines is way more efficient.

No. I think the entry level should have been 32G of ram. 16G or ram today is like 8G of ram 5 years ago.
I think they picked a decent entry level in this case. The 8GB entry level was insane, especially with shared RAM between CPU and GPU.

"Thicker and heavier" is fine by me if it improves functionality. I can only hope it's more serviceable as well.
The ports seem to be on modules inside, going by the interiors they showed in the presentation.

You don't know what you're talking about at all. 8GB is plenty enough to run any modern OS; if your OS needs 32G of RAM to function smoothly then throw it away and pick one written by people who know how computers work.

I bet they will not address one of the most important things that I hate about macOS and that's UI smoothness. I mean, up until this point my M1 Mac mini was the latest and greatest computer but it still can't handle some UI animations. And that have been the case since OS X Yosemite. They haven't made any progress in this field, even with a fully Metal UI rendering.
That doesn't sound good, and I'm not even on a modern machine or OS. :(

Am I the only one here that would have traded the HDMI port for literally anything else?

One more USB-C
A single USB-A
literally anything else...

HDMI just seems like a waste of space.
I just don't understand why it doesn't support 120Hz 4K HDR through the HDMI port.
Is it not an HDMI 2.1 port? Or is it 2.1, like the Apple TV 4K, but without 120Hz support, like the Apple TV 4K? Maybe they could add support with an update?

Not for people who work, it doesn’t. Every conference room has an HDMI cable.
How many times do you use it? Why do I have to 'carry' a port that I never use? An USB-to-HDMI-dongle would do the same thing. That is also the reason why there is -USB-, Universal Serial Bus. Different people, different needs. This HDMI-port wasted an extra USB-port or space for extra battery life or other, more up-to-date, things.

Cables can be replaced easily, my conference room has DP and HDMI cables with female to male converters for HDMI, DP, mDP, etc.

I mean a cable is what? 10 bucks top. You buy it once, and it's a permanent fixture.
Except people with Windows computers all use HDMI cables. So, a person with a Mac has to always remember to bring a stupid dongle with them. Now, they can just plug the same cable directly into their Mac like any normal person with a Windows laptop does.

Sure but this moves the bottom further away from the table surface to further help with cooling.
Yeah, I totally get it. I’m just pointing out that it’s not a flattering look in the promo images, compared to the previous gen.
I’m sure it’ll be a non-issue in real world use but I wish they would’ve found a clever way to reduce the visibility of those feet. Just me being nit picky over a machine that is well outside of my needs and budget. 😅

That port will be collecting dust on my machine.
Actually, I want to know why computers STILL don't normally have filters on the air intakes and cleanable ones at that. I have seen a few desktop tower cases with filters, and really poor ones, but that's all. I HAVE seen how necessary it is to clean the dust out of the inside of laptops. Myself and friends have recovered several suffering laptops just by opening them up and sucking out the dust around the intake and ports.

All the MacBook Pros since 2016 had perfectly symetrical dual Thunderbolt ports on both sides - I don't think removing a 40gbps TB4 port which can do anything and replacing it with a single charging port and HDMI is par for course really - if they'd left all the TB ports and added legacy back I wouldn't have minded as much.

It's clear the Magsafe, HDMI and SD card are all using a the 4th bus lane that would have been used for a Thunderbolt connector.
Oh yeah, that makes a lot of sense for why they chose this. Would you rather have it internal, or have to plug in a "dock" device that always seems to lack a daisy-chained thunderbolt port? So many Thunderbolt devices lack a second port to continue the chain. It's irritating.

🤷‍♂️I couldn't care less about marketing image. It still looks way better than most PC laptops I've ever set eyes on, and it's all metal, on top of that (no flexing and creaking). I care way more about functionality and practicals than image.

There are other humans in the world. A LOT of those humans have the need to connect to HDMI, especially for business. I can't think of anything stupider, less professional, less convenient, and more error prone than having to rely on dongle to connect to a client's display system.

It's not very good. It's usable but it's Apple we're talking about. And you wouldn't believe how much macOS stutters even on the latest machine if you select like four hundred photos and drag them to some place where you want them. On the other hand Windows is totally smooth even on a decade old machine in all parts of the OS. I think I'm not very demanding if I want my latest and greatest Mac to have completely smooth interface. It's like the most basic thing on any computer.
