This isn't normal; take it back and tell them that its hitting 104C which is the boiling point of water.

Nothing should overheat to that much, your product is obviously faulty

Could be spotlight indexing. Every release we hear stories like this for the first day after transfer.

This gives me hope!

Another question: does apple use a thermal grease or a pad of some type? I wonder if the paste is like AS5, and just requires a curing time of some type. I may take a look at it if I put my Agility 2 in tonight.

I've seen some pretty sloppy grease applications if you look through the thread about older MBP owners that re-applied the thermal paste.

I personally wouldn't mess with the paste on a brand new machine, though. Just exchange it.

I'm surprised you even booted your machine without putting the SSD in! First thing I did was unbox and unscrew the back :)

Seems hot. My 2010 13" MBP idles around 35-38C and when playing games it will max around 75-80c.

You must've clicked on the optional grill in the BTO.

Those temps don't sound normal though. Rev A issues sounds like...

What people are failing to realize in this thread is that the machine should be able to run at full throttle for extremely long periods of time in reasonable room temperatures without issue.

It doesn't matter what he was doing. The machine should take it and still be at a safe temperature from the auto-shutdown failsafe.

I would take it back to the store immediately.

Your laptop has a booble in the thermal paste, so it is not trasfering heat to the thermal dissipation system as it is not in contact with it. It is a usual defect. Return it.

Or it could be that 45W TDP is actually getting the better of the heat spreaders.
Meaning this is what you get when it isn't in a 3.5" thick plastic monster case. Too early to tell.
The 3.06GHz Core 2's got pretty close to this when doing After Effects etc.

Seems like processor and graphic powers are moving so fast, but cooling and battery technology are not moving as fast as others...

ONE WORD

RETURN!

95C is not normal.

Thermal slowdown is 100c on my gaming laptop, shuts off at 108c.

Thermal paste issue from the factory. Much better once it was repasted.

I hope we don't have the bad thermal paste issue again on these MBPs. My old SR MBP had a terrible factory paste job on top of the nvidia 8600 issue.

Cheers,

This. Every computer model will have a couple of duds. You were unlucky enough to get one of them. Go get it replaced.

been running World of warcraft and a few other programs on my mac for about 3 hours straight now. no overheat conditions. everything is same as my 2010 model. i own the 2011 15" 2.0

I gave it one more go around this evening. Loaded up Battlefield BC2 under bootcamp. Loaded, played about 8 min, and crashed with temp at 104. Everything locked up, and had to hard reset.

Just took it back to the store as per the advice here. New one will be opened within the hour.

Bummer having to return the machine. But it was the right decision. Hope the second works perfectly.

Yes, this.

My 2010 MBP never gets above 100. If this is 'normal' it's going back.

Yeah, take it back. This is not normal. My i5 2010 MBP never reaches 80, even when gaming.

I think you got a faulty MBP, you'll get a new one :)

I will be interested to see what temps this new one comes in at.

What are you using to monitor the temps?

I'm running a 15" 2.3 GHz with about ambient temps of 20C, and at idle I'm seeing the following temps using iStat Pro:

HD: 32 C
CPU: 40-42 C
CPU Heatsink: 35 C
Enclosure Base 1/2/3: 31/31/28 C
GPU: 35 C
Heatsink B: 35 C

Both fans are running at 2000 rpm.

I'm going to run some games and whatnot now to see what I can get it up to. So far this thing's a beast.

Well, I got the old machine returned, and the new machine setup. It's a completely different animal! Where the last one would idle upwards of 70C, the new is between 38 and 42C. Just played L4D2 for a good 30 min, and it never broke 85. Installed the SSD, and I'm lovin' it!

For what it's worth, I've been using Hardware Monitor as well as smcfancontrol for temp monitoring in OS X and hardware monitor + lubbos fan control in win7.

Thanks for suggesting I return it. I'm really glad I did.

It looks like Apple is still applying liberal amounts of thermal paste. When I saw that picture I ordered some arctic silver 5 from amazon. I'm going to replace the thermal paste when my 15" arrives.

Great to hear that Apple replaced your machine, and got your problem fixed.

What apps are you all using to gauge temperatures? The only time my Mac gets hot is when I'm running skype.. I kinda figured skype was the problem since it has so many bugs in the first place.. After skyping for about 15 minutes, that's when my fans starts blowing and it gets a little hot

Also, Im on a maxed out 15 inch

Skype 5? voice or video? I run 2.8 and I've had chats and voice chats going all day and it never even made a dent in the CPU time. I haven't tried a video chat yet.
