Got L4D1 to load - played about 5 minutes, and it crashed. Temp at time of crash was 104:mad:

I run it on bootcamp because it works so much better than on OS X.
...

Playing games in Windows on bootcamp can be a problem since AFAIK the fans run at the static lowest speed of 2000 rpm regardless of workload on the CPU. So playing a game which will max your video card and make use of all four cores in Windows should raise the MBP's temperature to shut down level. You'll have to set your fans to a higher speed pre-emptively in Mac OS X and then reboot to obtain a higher fan speed in bootcamp.

Unless I'm mistaken and someone knows that the fans do actually auto adjust in Windows?

Why do you insist keeping the computer while you have a refund/replacement option? 70 something Celcius at idle is weird when there are people reporting 30s 40s C at idle load.

Well, I got the old machine returned, and the new machine setup. It's a completely different animal! Where the last one would idle upwards of 70C, the new is between 38 and 42C. Just played L4D2 for a good 30 min, and it never broke 85. Installed the SSD, and I'm lovin' it!

For what it's worth, I've been using Hardware Monitor as well as smcfancontrol for temp monitoring in OS X and hardware monitor + lubbos fan control in win7.

Thanks for suggesting I return it. I'm really glad I did.

Reading FTW:rolleyes:

I've experienced a couple of crashes with my new Mac.. My computer is just idle.. Well only thing that is running is Safari and on macrumor forums..
My CPU temperture is 56C.. I think I'm just going to return this unit for a new one..

Just went to ESPN.com and watched a video. Immediatly. My Temperture jumped up to 66C

is that on your imac or mbp?
wonder those 2 are comparable heat-wise
if it's a new mbp, my cpu at the moment is showing 44°C with firefox / itunes / skype / MSN running

Just exchanged my MacBook.. I will let you all know how this one runs compared to the last one

FaceTime is the culprit for me. After shutting it down, my CPU temp dropped from 77 to 52 in 60 seconds.
Steam was my culprit. Although it was just running in background to download some games (no game on, of course) OS X was using the discrete graphics. Was getting 60-70 Celsius temps, 2000-2500rpm fans and 3hours battery life. After quitting Steam the battery life jumped up to 7:35 (83%), fans at 2000rpm and temps down to 40-50.

AMD 6750 vs. Intel 3000 is a MASSIVE difference in this machine.

Guys, i've noticed that if you have torrent on, that also affects it. I was getting worried cause mine would stay at around 55. Now i'm at 45c just browsing

Edit: nvm, the culprit might be Google chrome, with chrome i get around 55C, with safari i get around 45

Chrome also keeps it on discrete graphics because it accesses OpenCL.

^^ that app will let you set it to integrated / discrete whenever you want

Do you run iStat to see if something was running the CPU in the background? I'd bet Steam or something else was eating the CPU cycles. It wasn't the graphics card.

I have a 2011 17" and I'm positive the graphics do not make 4 hours of difference to the battery life when you're not doing anything graphically intensive. Before I installed that app above so I could switch it to integrated when on battery, I was getting > 6:30 on the battery doing light tasks. So nearly 7 hours while on discrete... I know I was on discrete because I always have Skype and Coda open and those, like Chrome, will force it to use the AMD.

I also don't get any difference in idle temps. I'm at 39 right now no matter which card I switch on.

I think my fans auto adjust under VMWare. Maybe that's worth a try.

Safari is in need of a fairly major update due to widespread crashing issues. If you beachball when running Safari just force quit it. It happens on my macs about once a day.

ESPN clips are Flash and burn up a lot clock cycles. i.e. the computer will run warm-hot (depending on the time) when streaming Flash.

cheers

I'd guess Safari crashes on me about once in every 200 hours of use as a developer and I'd probably blame 1/2 of those on crappy web pages before the app.

This gives me hope!

Another question: does apple use a thermal grease or a pad of some type? I wonder if the paste is like AS5, and just requires a curing time of some type. I may take a look at it if I put my Agility 2 in tonight.

They use the cheap crappy thermal grease, like a lot of other companies do.

I decided to sort of stress my machine since it is my first one, and I don't know about all these heat issues with Apple.

Using handbrake, I was getting Temps of CPU 1 and 2 about 90C and CPU A was 83 C, GPU was around 55. I ran it for about 20 minutes (was almost done encoding a 2.5 hour movie).Within about 10 seconds of stopping the encoding, iStat showed CPU temps down in the mid 60's and rapidly dropped to the mid 40's when the fans dropped to 2000 rpm.

Funny, when I was playing Braid (which is graphically pretty intense, I was getting the GPU around 80 or so, and the CPU 1 and 2 around 83. I guess these are OK? Been reading a lot of threads about the heat issue, and I know that these things can run hot, but I did not really want a $2500 coffee warmer...

It looks like Apple is still applying liberal amounts of thermal paste. When I saw that picture I ordered some arctic silver 5 from amazon. I'm going to replace the thermal paste when my 15" arrives.

Pretty sure every tear-down I have seen looks as though a 3yr old applied the thermal paste to the chips / heatsinks. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the cause.

In fact, someone showed in an earlier thread an exact example of what I meant.

2 solutions, and I know what I'd choose.

1.Return it.
2.Open it up and re-apply the thermal grease.

I'd go with option 1.

My new MacBook Pro is also running very hot for some reason. My 2010 i7 ran at about 40ºC at idle; this one is running at 80ºC at idle; when doing anything it jumps to 95ºC-100ºC which is quite terrifying to say the least.

From the iFixit teardown it appears the globs thermal paste may be the culprit; I will replace the thermal paste to see if that fixes my issue.

Is it possible to go to a genius bar and ask them to reapply the thermal paste?

No. I don't think I'd want them disassembling it down to the motherboard in the back, anyway. They don't do anything back there except for the "user-replaceable" parts.

around 50 celcius when idle.. is this ok/normal?

just got the macbook pro, i've been getting worried about the heat issues reading the threads on here. i'm really loving the machine so far

i think mine is not as bad as some people have had it (and had to return it), but not as good as some of the temperatures people are getting when idle (38-42 celcius)

i have the higher end 15" model 2.2 ghz. i am getting around 50 celcius when idle (safari and maybe itunes skype etc). what do you guys think, is this normal? 720p youtube video bumps it up to around 58 celcius max.

haven't run anything more intensive yet.

i'm not considering returning it as i think this temperatures seem within the normal range, but would appreciate any feedback.
