Looking at this thread, I see that allot of people are still buying the 12.9" iPad. I had the old one, but I got it strictly for the Apple Pencil. It quickly got cumbersome lugging it around. When the 9.7" was announced that felt like a downgrade to me so I skipped it, but this 10.5" iPad checks all the boxes for me. Apple Pencil, full sized keyboard, while being an upgrade over my 12.9" iPad Pro in every way.

What do you mean "still"?? As in are you suggesting the 12.9" is some boat anchor relic? GTFOOH.

Enjoy your blown up phone split screen interface. 12.9" owns.

Be glad we have choices. I'm glad the little one works best for you!

You pick what size is best for you but the multitasking on the 12.9 will certainly hold alot more value on IOS 11 compared to 10.5.

In terms of productivity the 12.9 appears a better option to me but depends on a person's usage and needs

12.9 256GB. Seems the 12.9 doesn't get much love.

Think too many people believe the 12.9" version is just too big. It feels way lighter than my original 9.7" iPad - we forget how far things have come along the way.

Sitting back at a normal, usable distance makes the screen look similar to about an 80" tv (it dwarfs my wall mounted 65" screen at relative viewing distances).

The screen is amazingly bright. The four speakers actually have some bass (not 5.1 surround beating but good enough to make you want to watch video or listen to music). They are very clear and LOUD and even music sounds good when not pushed to the max.

So managed to find a 64 GB 10.5 space grey WIFI model at BB (they only had a few units in) and now just innitialy checking out the device comparing it with my Air 2 and first thoughts are WOW.

This thing is just fast. No stutter, no lag, nothing. The screen is gorgeous. And for me, it feels perfect and far better than the 12.9 pro I tried and returned last year. The 12.9 was fantastic but far too big for me, always having a 9.7 version I was curious how this 10.5 version would be. So far, so good.

I'll post back with more detailed thoughts but my first impression is I'm ridiculously impressed everyone.

Yes there is now a size for whatever need you have.

The 12.9" is will be great with multitasking: the screen is like having two minis side by side but the height is almost like a 9.7". There is a lot to love about extra screen real estate at high res. With the software enabling file management and drag and drop the 12.9" becomes a more viable "desktop-like" tool.

Having used my 12.9" iPad for a day, it's more a sit on desk device with a bluetooth keyboard on your lap than a handheld device. Great for Word or Excel or watching media.

Pre-ordered a 12.9 last week, email this morning from BB said it was "delayed" and they expect to ship it to me by July 13th. I have 4 Apple stores with plenty of stock around me, but I wanted that $50 giftcard. Already picked up my Apple Pencil, so I'm itching to cancel my pre-order. This is why I don't shop at Best Buy...

Nope.

The gold, and even more so, ROSE gold, are marketing tools to appeal to key demographics. I'd actually prefer them to release some bolder colours instead: PRODUCT RED, iPod Blue and iPod Pink would liven up the tablet world.

There goes resale value.

Fricken' lazers.

Yeah, resale was exactly why I didn't inscribe my new pro.

I have had the mini since the very first day it was released. I haven't had a single "unwanted touch"

Sounds like something parents warn their kids about...

Went from Air 2 to 10.5 today and it’s a definite upgrade!!

Yeah, I replaced an air 2 64gb with a 10.5 256gb, and I'm really impressed. The pencil is pretty much everything I'd hoped it would be (though the lack of an attachment mechanism to the iPad is annoying), and the keyboard is a dream to type on. Also, the transfer from iPad Air to iPad Pro of all my apps and data was way better than my previous upgrade. The screen is the perfect size, the true tone effects are subtle (until you hit the comparison button during setup, anwyay!) and perfect, and I made a few new app purchases like OmniFocus which are really sick.

Happy camper, right here! Though I do wish I could find a decent scratch protection for the back. The keyboard cover is thick enough that I'm thinking I only want a skin, but places like bestskinsever don't yet have a 10.5 model... In any case, I can't see putting protection on the front. The screen is too gorgeous to put a layer on top, scratches or no!

Thanks for confirming.

That too... :p
but the 256G version is $100 cheaper (in Australia) for the new model 12.9" so you have to pick the right one.

And 64G didn't exist before so naturally you'd expect to pay a bit more than a 32G that's gone (Ok, so we all know Apple's memory pricing lags the real world and commands a premium... at least there is a 512GB version for those with pockets that reach their ankles).

Apple didn't update the 12.9" iPad as much (no redesign or reduced bezels) and also mentioned that the 9.7" was the most popular! With the 5.8" iPhone likely replacing both iPhones in the future, Apple may be simplifying its lineup. Just saying.

Im guessing they are testing the waters with the 10.5" iPad, in a couple years the screen might get bigger with an OLED screen with no bezels like the iPhone 8. If the sales of the 12.9" drop significantly they'll simplify the lineup.

Seems stable? No major issues?
With reference to the device I can see no issues. I have only problems with PDF Expert 6, which I use a lot, running iOS 11. It seems annotate and signing pdf files not working at all.

I agree I am stunned by the improvements in sound compared to my 1st gen 12.9 pro, they really under hyped this.

Why does this thing not have USB-C?

I wouldn't expect USB-C ports on iDevices for a long time, if ever. They will support some USB-C features, but that's more to do with the spec (USB 3.0/3.1) not the shape of the port. Eventually they'd all come with Lightning-to-USB-C cables and maybe a USB A-to-C adapter.

I'm curious what your thoughts are on that key demographic. I purchased the Rose Gold iPhone 6s Plus, not because it was the clearest way to distinguish the 6 from 6s (I've been accused of such pedantry before), but because I find the color to be luxurious in a way that silver (and gold) have lost over the years - as a color, not a metal. Pink itself doesn't do it for me (no pink shirts in my closet), but the aluminum shows the color nicely.

Obviously it has to do with the fact that the Mini is WAY smaller and lighter, therefore you are less prone to get unwanted touches on the display. Try holding an Air with one hand and you'll experience a totally different story.
