Couldn't be more excited about this. Shame it didn't happen last month.
Lets hope for surprise february release

The 27-inch display makes sense. People have to understand this is an all-in-one machine. Consumers buy this to save space in the first place. If it were 32-inch, it would significantly reduce the number of desks it fits onto.

For the people that want larger displays, get the upcoming pro Mac mini with the Apple branded external display.

look at the current 27, love the outer dimensions and make a way smaller bezel, that is what I would be looking for, that could easily be a 30

I'm also in the insta-buy category for this thing. But 27" will mean a downsize for me personally, as I'm currently on an Intel MBP connected to a 32" display. I'm getting one either way. Work from home being so ubiquitous now means that desktops make a lot more sense for a lot more people. I hope it has a really great webcam (better than the 24"'s 1080P one)

Needs to be a 32" - Apple is behind on this. 27" is yesterday's size - introduced on the 2009 iMac literally 12 years ago. Been using a 32" 4k display for three years now - and it's been incredible. Disappointing to see it be a 27". Hopefully a 32" version can be released as well - because until then I'll have to buy a mini and hookup my preferred MODERN display size.

This also means by the year 2040 I expect a 50" display in my face. /s

Get something that doesn't exist? OK...

So this will than be the iMac Pro.
The standard iMac will (does) have 24" screen, while the Pro iMac will have 27" screen. OK.

It’s too unwieldy for me. The 27-inch iMac is a large display without any modern ergonomics (height adjustment, swivel, pivot). Looks great on a magazine cover and those with small workspaces but actual professionals want a separate monitor with ergonomic features.

My 1st gen 2015 27” 5k Retina iMac has served me well. I am looking forward to this.

I really hope there's a separate external monitor coming too, but I am skeptical. I'm currently using a 31.5" LG monitor (docked with an M1 MBA) at a good distance and my PS5.

Really interested to see how they achieve 5k @ 120hz too. That might swing it for me to get a bigger desk and dual screen!

The Pro model probably needs to be 32"
It would be cool to have a 30+ inch model for people who want it, but as a current 27” iMac owner I gotta say I would really not want anything bigger.

At 27”, it takes up a lot of desk space and the panel’s large enough that you can’t really look at the whole screen at once from a normal viewing distance. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great computer, but it’s already really big. 32” would make it even more of a niche product.

32" at 4K is not Retina. In fact, it is in the "bad zone" for PPI at around 140. (Non-Retina should be around 110PPI and Retina should be around 220PPI).

So it would have to be 6K for ~220PPI and we know what those cost thanks to the Pro Display XDR.

(The Pro Display XDR is) not a realistic option.

It is, however, the only option at the moment for a high-PPI display.

Completely agree. 27” @5k is perfect. Ability to add a second Apple-designed 27” would be awesome too :)

Given that 5K@120Hz is not possible yet, do you think these rumors of 27 inch iMac with ProMotion mean Apple will go down in resolution?
5k120Hz is possible.
Apple was using 1 by 2 tile mode to power previous 5k model with DP 1.2.
So with 1 by 2 tile mode with DP 1.4 DSC it will have no issue driving 5k 120Hz at 10bit.

The bright side of it being only 27" vs 30" or 32" is cost.

It will still be expensive, but at least it will be somewhat more affordable.

I've repeatedly come darn close to ordering either an existing Intel-based 27" iMac or just given in and gotten the 24" for the M1 chip because my late 2012 iMac is running sooooo long in the tooth. This might give me just enough hope to hold out a little longer.
