I've repeatedly come darn close to ordering either an existing Intel-based 27" iMac or just given in and gotten the 24" for the M1 chip because my late 2012 iMac is running sooooo long in the tooth. This might give me just enough hope to hold out a little longer.
now it is better to wait. I think March will be the month.

I owned a 2015 model and sold it last year. Have upgraded several 2012-2014 models for friends. I could live with the non-adjustable display, but to have to blindly reach behind the computer to access any of the USB ports is plain stupid.
You can buy an iMac with built-in VESA mount adapter from Apple if works better for you. Search for 'apple.com iMac vesa mount'.

The 27-inch display makes sense. People have to understand this is an all-in-one machine. Consumers buy this to save space in the first place. If it were 32-inch, it would significantly reduce the number of desks it fits onto.

Except that a 24" iMac already exists for those folks. And they could also provide two options in the "iMac Pro" line (or whatever they'll call these): 27" and larger. There's no way a larger screen iMac wouldn't sell like hotcakes.

It would be cool to have a 30+ inch model for people who want it, but as a current 27” iMac owner I gotta say I would really not want anything bigger.

At 27”, it takes up a lot of desk space and the panel’s large enough that you can’t really look at the whole screen at once from a normal viewing distance. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great computer, but it’s already really big. 32” would make it even more of a niche product.

I'm not quite getting your logic here, as you could say the exact same thing about standalone monitors over 27" and I don't think 32" monitors are a niche product. Seems like a ton of folks want those. I've owned 27" iMacs since 2012 and would definitely get a larger one if it became available. I only sit about 2 feet or less from it and I can easily see the whole screen.

And like I said to the other poster, it could simply be an option - it doesn't have to be either 27" or 32" (or whatever the larger one would be).

@blazerunner What, specifically, do you disagree with here and why? I don't get it.

Given that 5K@120Hz is not possible yet, do you think these rumors of 27 inch iMac with ProMotion mean Apple will go down in resolution?

Retina display on Mac are scaled anyway. For the 5K iMac the maximum ie. “More Space” desktop resolution is 3200x1800 while 2560x1440 is the “Best for Retina”.

The Retina scaling resolutions are then doubled eg. if you were to choose 3200x1800, it’s essentially 6400x3600. That, however, applies only to vectors (text/typeface and UI elements) while image (raster files) and videos appear in the resolution they’re set (HD movies would still be 1080p) provided if they’re smaller than the scaled resolution.

As to ProMotion- my guess is that if you were to use 3rd party utilities to force the use of higher (full native resolution) or non-supported scaling, ProMotion would be disabled.

What are the odds it'll have the notch like the new MBPs? Let's hope not considering how much people have complained about that. 27" would be ideal for me. Kind of wish I could get the purple version but I guess this will be the "pro" model so silver/space grey.

The bezels on an iMac, even slimmed down as they are on the 24, are larger than those on a MBP so it’s unlikely the new 27 iMac would have a notch. There is sufficient room for the hardware in the slimmed bezels of the new iMacs.

Hopefully a black or space grey version. And would be great if it didn’t have the chin at all, make it thicker and hide it behind the display, not under it. No notch would also be a plus.

As Apple when it came with first 5k they had to implement timing controller (TCON) this time will come first with 5k 120hz

Still feels like 24" and 27" are too close in size for two AIOs. I'm still of the view that it will come in something like 30" or 32" (or, 27" and 30/32) and will believe this until the official announcement says otherwise.

Chins are a design feature. Moving hot parts into the chin keeps the display uniform.

Yes and no…I would like something like a 30” myself, but they have sold macbooks that are at a 2” difference for years and it’s always a big debate, do I get the 13 or the 15…now it’s do I get the 14 or the 16.

Yeah come on Apple you should know better then trying to release anything new in the midst of a worldwide pandemic with a global multiyear chip shortage affecting every corporation on Earth!
It’s almost a 3 trillion company. I’m sure Apple gets the #1 priority. Pretty sure they have it all figured out by now, Money talks!

Why not a 34-inch ultra-wide? The rest of the industry has been doing 24" and 27" for AIO many years.

For an iMac? Why is this bad? An iMac Pro would have dual M1 Max chips.
My theory as well. The current iMac 27 inch allows for up to 128 GB of RAM, but the M1 max does not.
Wouldn’t be surprised if they allow for the option of an M1Max Duo.
16 performance cores instead of eight, four efficiency cores instead of two, 64 core GPU instead of 32, up to 128 GB of ram instead of 64.
I think this would destroyed the recently introduced 16 core Intel chips.

I mean, at one point the iMac came in 15 and 17 inches, then 17 and 20, then 20 and 24.
So they don’t seem that close to me, keep in mind that the 24 inch is really like 23.5 from my understanding
